When it comes to prepaid cards and gift cards I do absolutely no persuading to avoid any trouble later. Same with phone cards and people ask all the time.

A customer got mad at my one shift manager here because she didnt fill the customers check. Which clearly is a bad idea.

We have these store branded money cards. A customer came in wanted to cash a payroll check and put it on the money card. I've never done that before in one transaction. Didn't even know if it was allowed. I called my supervisor and made her walk me through it and stand there while I did it. That way if there's a question, they can ask her.

    Wow.

I mean the bad bills I have come across are usually pretty obvious when you touch them. They feel entirely different.

Where I work we have a black light box that we put the bill under and for each bill the strip is supposed to show up a specific color.

I hate the way my store hands out coupons and how the sales are handled because there is constant problems. I had a lady at my cashiers register and a problem arose because of a sale. 2-12 Pack of soda's weren't coming up 2 for $10.00 because there a weekly sale going on for that soda, it is just that we didn't have all the sale signs up. The 2 for 10 is the regular price when there is no sale at all on the item, I was trying to explain this to the lady and she wasn't listening and was criticizing us for not having all the sale signs up. I tried to inform her that it has been busy and we can only do so much with the amount of people we have on.

I honestly try to be as honest as I can with the customer just so they understand how things work and where I am coming from. This lady just wasn't having it and pulled out stupid line "Well, I hope you know the customers always right" and I replied "I'm sorry, but that isn't true." I probably shouldn't have said that but I didn't care at the moment anymore. She said "I guess not at your store", then proceeded to get her stuff and left.

My patience has become paper thin when it comes to working with the public now, but the majority of the time I am pretty good at handling that and not letting it show. It sucks because I like the people I work with but it feels like such a shitty location when it comes to the nasty people that come into the store. Every single day there is just something going on with someone or a customer causing a problem.

Remember I work at a Regional Mall, my store is one of the Anchors (alone we have 172,000 square feet of selling floor). It is located off a freeway, and to get to my particular location, one has to pass by the acres and acres of parking space for the rest of the place. The sign on the highway must be 60 x 120 feet; as one drives around the vast memorial to consumerism you would pass by many, many signs indicating other retailer's names...

In addition, my particular store is on the 'far end' of the Mall so unless you were beamed in from the Starship Enterprise, you can't help but drive by several other locations...

...plus the fact the only way to get TO my store, you either have to drive or walk from the nearest bus stop, which is easily half a mile away (it is very poorly serviced by mass transit)...

I was moving a large load of merchandise from one end of my store to the other and a customer asks me:

'Is this a Mall? Are there other stores here?'

It's been busy for me at the movie theatre. I just love it when someone comes to the window and asks "what's the best movie playing?" We have 24 theatres which makes it 24 to choose. Right now Godzilla is taking up 4 and tonight XMen move in. Not sure how many they will be in. And another thing...sometimes they don't even have the money out and when they do, it's all crumpled up. UGH! I hate that!!

I am usually dismayed when the women pull the money out of the bra and their boyfriend/lover is right beside them and doesn't bat an eye. And don't get me started about the teenagers and how they fold their money.

I've had that happen before, too. Years ago, when I worked for an old-fashioned Walmart dept. store (the clothes on one half/everything else on the other half, with a limited food section type - you hardly see them anymore, because they've converted most all of them to the big-box Supercenter format), we did have a big-box Kmart Supercenter diagonally across the street from us. But again, our Walmart back then was actually an anchor store for a small mall. People would still get us confused. /facepalm...

I've got one that beats all of you!

When my boss's girlfriend was a store manager for Sally Beauty Supply, her and her sales clerk one day had this woman come in, and when the woman needed change, you won't believe in a million years where she went for it. Not in her purse, not in her bra.

In her underwear. She was literally hiding spare change in No-Gay-Man's-Land. My boss's gf made the comment of, "What was she doing - hiding a roll of quarters in her vagina, and using it like a PEZ dispenser for coins?

The woman went to go get more change. and both the manager and the clerk said, "Um, no, ma'am, we're good. We'll live with being a few cents short, no big deal..."

I hate it when cashiers hand me back money out of order (largest to smallest - smallest on top), unfaced, and not all right-side up.

... but then those that hand it back that way also have change and my receipt wadded in there too - thrust at me in one big handful (hate that, too).

Had an elderly come to my window last night and wanted a ticket to XMen. Told him that movie has already started and the next would be in a half hour. He said he didn't care. Told him that I can't print out his ticket (got in "trouble" for doing this two days ago from a manager). He insisted. I printed it out. He then decided that he didn't want to see it in 3D! Thank goodness 2 inches of thick glass separate us from the guests!! UGH!!

Last night a guy came through the self-check. He tried to pay with one of those VISA giftcards. It wasn't approved. Said he be back in a few minutes after he called them to see what's up. 2 hours later, he comes back and pays with a store giftcard. Fine, I thought. It worked and I'm done dealing with him. About 30 minutes later, I'm helping someone at one the self-checks. I turn around and see an assistant manger at my register giving the same guy the rest of the cash that's on his giftcard. Now, we DON'T do that. In fact that's the first time I've seen someone do it.

She did it because the gas pumps at the services station weren't accepting gift cards. (You get a discount if you pay with our giftcards.) After they leave I tell the customer service supervisor. "You know, he didn't buy that card today. He came in with that card." And he says: "I guess he got one over on her, then."

I find it exhausting. Every day, day in and day out. Someone is always trying to work the system. Why can't people just shop? Just plain shop.

    It is exhausting.

My store is high volume in theft and my company barely sends security guards to watch the store. I find stuff all the time ripped open on the shelves and I feel like I have to watch so many people.

Oh, god, I'm sorry for you guys in your stores, but I'm also glad I'm not alone.

My store is about the highest theft store I've ever been at in 12 and a half years of being in retail.

Every night, somebody's trying to pull a scheme, get one over, or steal something.

I had this one guy come in last night. Tried to return two items, about 7 or 8 bucks a piece. He realized the receipt he had wasn't for the items he had, so he goes out to his car and digs for more receipts. His wife (allegedly) sent him back up to my store to return the two items.

The man did produce a valid, in-date receipt for one of the two items. I did his refund. My manager was at the secondary front register across from mine. The man starts talking to my manager, spitting out this shuck-and-jive bullshit about how his wife's a nurse, blah-blah-blah...

So I get to the part where I actually refund the money. I look on the receipt and see that it was paid for via debit card. Under our rules, a transaction paid for with a debit card can - at the customer's choosing - be refunded either by electronically crediting the money back on that debit card, or we can give you cash money on the spot.

So I just happen to ask the man what he'd like to do. "Oh, cash, please. I need the money for gas..."

There was one thing that kinda made up for last night shoppers. I was walking past this shelf of random clearance items we have. On it I saw a 300 count cotton queen size sheet set for $9. If I wasn't working there, I would have never noticed it.

And even better it's ice blue (think light blue) I like blue for my bedroom. I find it restful.

So on a regular basis items in out store get scanned, the last few weeks we have been noticing that a lot of the Advil has been missing. Mostly the higher counts. So yesterday there was this guy that I noticed who seemed to be a bit too antsy, so I asked him if he needed help with anything. He asked for Mousse for his hair, I told him where it was but interestingly enough he did not go down the aisle I specified, he went running around a few other aisles. So I kept my eye on him.

Luckily it was our Truck day and almost everyone else was there. I went to help another customers and not even a minute later another Manager of mine caught him trying to steal a couple big bottles of Advil (which the total ended up being $118.00). My Manager took the bag out of his hand that had the Advil in and he just hurried out the store still.

Like 10 minutes later he actual comes in the store claiming that he has his wallet in the bag that my Manager grabbed. He didn't, but he kept claiming he did. My Manager told him this and kept pushing, telling her she needed to hear him out. She told him that she didn't want to hear him out because he was a criminal, he claimed he lost his job, blah, blah, blah. But my Manager kept telling him she didn't want to hear it and the wallet wasn't in the bag and that if he wanted to know for sure he could wait for the Police to show him that it wasn't in the bag. He was very agitated that she wouldn't let him talk and told her that he wanted to be treated as a Human Being.

Of course at the mention of the Police, he left.

    Hit it, boys... ♫ ♪ ♫

So on yesterday's/night before last's shift, my boss, my night assistant, was assigned to straighten the hellhole that is our frozen food freezer. After spending several hours in the drink cooler, he said he wasn't up to doing the frozen food freezer too. So, your humble night cashier volunteered to take on the freezer myself, while my boss takes over the front of the store in my place. I wore a grey sweater, gloves, and a two-sizes-too-small black hoodie over my head. I used the black hoodie as basically a space helmet, to where you could only see my eyes peeping out. I was covered from head to foot, because, working in a below-zero room, obviously I needed it.

So I needed to go back to the stockroom at the back of the building to go get one of our huge plastic storage totes to store all of the loose individual pints of ice cream into.

So, with me still covered from head to foot, I venture out onto the sales floor to make my way back to the stockroom. This woman crosses my aisle, and sees me coming down the aisle, and her face immediately turns to panic. Before she could scream, I was like, "Ma'am, ma'am, ma'am, relax, I'm actually a store employee. I'm just working the frozen food freezer!"

She was like, "I'm sure glad you said something, because I sure thought you were a burglar come to rob the place."
Me: "No, ma'am, my manager's on the next aisle - he can verify that I'm a store employee." And he did - my manager verified everything I said with the woman. Admittedly, it never dawned on me to pull the hoodie off, and show my head and face. I was in focused mode, and hellbent on the task at hand of dealing with the freezer, and getting done what I needed to get done.

She was a good sport about it, but when she initially saw me, I didn't know whether she was going to try to either run from me, or try to take me on.

    >> Then, last night, about 10pm, there was an incident out in our parking lot. Apparently, a drunk woman hit a guy on a motorcycle. Thankfully, nobody was seriously hurt. The motorcycle had seen better days, obviously, but that can be replaced, people can't. So no serious injuries was the main thing.

The driver of the motorcycle was actually going to be cool with it, and treat it like any other traffic accident - I get your information, you get mine, we part ways and go home.

Um, no. The drunk woman insisted on calling Dallas Police. So there were about a dozen police cruisers, and a Dallas Fire Rescue fire engine on the scene. They gave her a breathalyzer, and of course, she bombed it. So she was going in for Driving Under the Influence (DUI for short).

But like any good informercial, "But wait, there's more!"

Upon Dallas Police running her information, they discovered she had warrants out for her arrest. Oops.

    Fail.

So yeah, courtesy of Taxpayer Limo (a police cruiser), she got a free ride downtown, for an all-expense-paid trip down to the luxurious 5-star amenities of the Lew Sterrett "Inn & Suites". She'll find out firsthand, how orange really is the new black.

Just stopped a guy from taking a basket full of red bull that totalled to 64 dollars. This is the second time this doofus has been stopped and the funny thing is he knew I was on to him and he tried to steal even more.

When he went out the door he was going on about him doing nothing wrong because he didnt make it out the door with the stuff.

The sad part is I was behind the register the whole time with customers and was able to rush out and stop him before he got stuff. LP (our secret security) pretty much let a guy get away with stealing cologne yesterday when they knew he was stealing it. They didnt catch him at the door when all they do is walk around watching for these people.

I dont know that but nothing else happened and it is pretty dead on sundays so it is easy to watch people. He has been in the store plenty of times before and bought stuff, who knows then he might of stole stuff too.

When it is more than one person stealing if there is a distractor it is usually someone asking for help and taking you to another part of the store. I think the mentality here is to try to psych you out and make you think a thief would not draw attention to himself.

Do people understand the way items are lined up on the shelf? There isn't going to be a different product behind the one that is in on the front of the shelf, what is behind it is going to be the same thing. I literally see people push things around and aside as if that is not the case and it is incredibly frustrating when you spent a a half hour facing that same aisle because people do that.

Also people that continue to walk around the store shopping after closing time and after an announcement was made.

MDL - I think what most customers who do that are doing is looking for the most current, freshest, latest expiration date on the product. Most retailers have their stockers put new product toward the back of the shelf, pulling existing stock to the front so that it will sell before customers get to the new stuff. Customers, on the other hand, seem to only want the what's new

Last night when this happened, it was with Hair Dye. Which seems to be always messed up anyway. I imagine there is an expiration date on those but it would be much greater than food/dairy products.

But I just finished a week remodeling the CVS store in Bensalem, PA. There are often bonus sizes (20% FREE!) and special packaging (Bonus Moisturizer enclosed!) for many products...and sometimes these special deals are hidden behind the regular product in regular packaging. When I rearranged product, I always put the better deal in front.

Little quiz from the supercenter. If you saw this sign on a self-check what would you think it means?

    "Debt/Credit Only"
    "No Cash Back"
"Does NOT take or give back Cash"

Today in the space of 4 hours I watched 15 (I counted) people ignore the sign and put money in the machine or ask it for cash back.
They all got lucky. Because sometime this machine will deal with cash sometimes it won't. (We're waiting for NCR to send a repairman) Today it played nice with everyone and let them get their cash. But I can't help but wonder...are they that focused that they just didn't see the sign? Or did they think it didn't apply to them?

I watched one woman appear to read the sing, ring up her purchases, then put a $100 bill in the machine.

    I just don't get it.

It is a bit of both really. You can tell people things directly and still they will do what they want.

^ Yeah, a hybrid of both.

Sometimes, I think the only reason I stay with my store is because of the health insurance, the closeness to my apartment, and the 8-on/6-off schedule that allows me to go to school.

And then, there are other times where I honestly believe that I literally have THE best job in the whole wide world.

Sunday night was my first night back on the job at work, after 3 weeks of medical leave for my eye surgery. I come back to this enormous welcome back card (a piece of posterboard, hamburger folded). It was signed from all of my regular, frequent customers, as well as co-workers and management.

Really humbling. Mine is a small-box type of store, and I like that there is more of a familiarity relationship, especially with the regulars, which you wouldn't have in a big box store, where you're just another person in line. It's really something special - especially in the storefront retail profession (thankless profession that it is) - that some of my customers really do think so highly of what I do, that they would do something that nice for me. I am fortunate.

Also, on a side note, my annual review came back - I have the best non-management job performance review of any employee in my building - pharmacy or non-pharmacy. My store's one salaried assistant (the second-in-command) gave me the review, and he said that I could easily move up to an hourly management position if I wanted.

I just smiled and said, OK, thank you. He's gorgeous and fine as hell, so I really didn't want to say anything. But I stand behind what I told my immediate supervisor on my shift (he and I get along great, and we both really want out of that store, but we both have to stick it out for now) - I told him: If they decide that they want to promote me - I quit! I'm not going to allow that store, and the upper management (store manager and up) to make my life a living hell like they do to the other hourly managers, and to mine, and to the salaried assistant.

I don't give a good goddamn if it does come with a several-dollars-an-hour raise in pay, it isn't worth the stress, mess, and BS! No. Just no.

Actually I think you should. As a manager you can make changes to improve things, as well as the title looking great on a resume for when you do find another job.

THank. Yeah, I know it would, and maybe if it were at another store location within the company, maybe. But every time I get the thought of, "Yeah, I'd like to move up...", something always happens - major problem, shoplifter, angry customer, etc. - that makes me go, "Yeah, no, I'm good. I'm good. That right there is why I'm glad I'm just the pee-on on the night shift."

You couldn't bribe me with a night with Russell Tovey for me to take a management position. No thanks, I'm good.

These aren't customers but this thread has evolved into general retail discussion, bitching anyway.

The majority of times thieves are really stupid, yes they get away in the beginning but their head is so big that they get greedy and eventually get caught. A lady yesterday who hit our store before was trying to leave with almost $500 dollars worth of stuff, it was a bunch of 8 packs of soap in 2 bags and a basket, 5 bottles of tide and razors as well. Yesterday was our truck day so she did not get far and the lady started screaming once my Managers grabbed the bags she was trying to leave with and not letting go.

My Manager followed her out of the store and got her license plate number because she had a car waiting for her right outside. She of course she called the Police and in no time, she will be caught like the rest of them.

There are people who get their prescriptions at our store, so that means their information is in the computer when the Pharmacist is looking up their medications. If said person has stolen from us before, it comes up in their system and let's the Pharmacist know that this person is a thief. We have all your information and it is information you are giving them when you get the prescription, I don't understand why you'd even attempt to steal at that very same store.

That's just like the guy I busted one night - he came up to me with a receipt from a sister store location, and wanted to "bring back" a Vicks Vaporizer machine. Physically, the boxes the vaporizers come in is literally about the size of your largest packages of bathroom tissue, to give you some ballpark idea. Larger-boxed items are mostly throughout retail, treated as their own case in the supply chain from the warehouse to the store - in which case, the item will have a large rectangular warehouse case label (about the size of a small postcard) on it, with a bunch of warehouse jargon and the store the item is going to (ours also has our store's street address on it).

Now, this joker came up with this sister store's receipt, with the vaporizer, and I just happen to notice the warehouse label stuck to it - it had OUR STORE LOCATION ON IT - he got it off OUR shelf! I called my manager to come stand behind me at the cash register, and very politely busted the guy in front of my manager. My manager just about died laughing.

Then, one night, my manager busts a shoplifter who was a regular. This girl literally had to balls to come in and steal WHILE WEARING HER WORK UNIFORM, COMPLETE WITH NAMETAG!!! She worked at the Chik-Fil-A a mile down the street from my store!

At a previous location I was at for my store, my one Manager caught a guy that worked at Duncan Donuts stealing. And he was a Manager there. Don't remember if he was wearing his uniform or not.

Thanks for the Wheaties box! I'm going to try and print it and post it on the bulletin board. Someone will get a kick out of it.

(I've gone pretty quiet on this thread lately, my current position pretty much prohibits me from posting too much. Sorry, gentlemen.)

Love the Wheaties Box. So true. Thanks to all who serve the public with a smile. Saw this in action today at a supermarket. The guy was mad because his lunch meat wasn't cut yet. The deli was short handed (as always on a Sunday) and he didn't know how else to express himself so he had to use the Lord name in anger against the employee and scream, "I'm going to speak with the manager!" Shows how stupid he is and that he can't express his anger in any other way. In the end, he had to stand there and wait for his order to be filled. And this was an adult.

You did a great job on the Wheaties box. I WAS able to print it and took it in...shared with a few others...but decided I couldn't post it on the bulletin board lest someone be offended...people are SO thin skinned these days...but my LP Manager thought it was hilarious...so it is posted in the LP office where few get to see it...but I think it might have been faxed elsewhere...at least that was what I was led to believe...

(Yes, that's a totally run-on stream of thought post, but after two overnights for inventory...sue me )
