Re: the last film you watched thread

The other night I saw the film Contracorriente (Undertow). It's Peru's submission as Best Foreign Language Film. Hopefully it will receive a nomination which will lead to wider release here in the US.

"Miguel is a handsome, young and beloved fisherman in Cabo Blanco, a small fishing village in the Northern coast of Peru, where the community has deep-rooted religious traditions. He is married to the beautiful Mariela, who is 7-months pregnant with their firstborn, but Miguel harbors a scandalous secret: He is having a love affair with another man, Santiago, a painter who is ostracized by the townsfolk for being agnostic and open about his sexuality. Tragedy strikes, Miguel is forced to deal with the consequences of his acts and to come to terms with who he really is, even if by doing so he stands the chance of losing the people he loves the most."

With sweeping images of the beautiful Peruvian coastline, UNDERTOW (Contracorriente) is the emotional intersection of contemporary sexuality, confronted by tradition and belief.

“In a confident yet relaxed feature debut, Fuentes-León has created a wholly unified work of art.” Kevin Thomas , Los Angeles Times

“Undertow, for all its narrative tricks, has been given the rhythm and texture of real life, as well as emotional undercurrents that are haunting.” Bob Mondello, NPR

“Sensual and romantic with a heavy dose of the supernatural and populated by indelible characters.” Pam Grady, Box-office Magazine

    Good luck!

I just saw Tron: Legacy at the IMAX theater near me. And, WOW! what an amazingly visual film. The effects were fantastic, fit very well with the lyrical tone of the film.

I saw Animal Kingdom from Australian this weekend. Very moody, with a bunch of soulless characters. Weaver received a best supporting actress nod from GG and BC but I have seen better. It is a crime film with a matriarch who just lets things happen and her sons, one of which is totally soulless.

What a pleasant discovery Trick 'r Treat turned out to be, a real sleeper. Mischievous writing, colors you can smell and clever art direction. With such popular production values it deserved a wider audience.

Winter's Bone. It was ok. Not sure why people think it deserves to be an Oscar nominee for best picture though. I guess Hollywood elitists are into movies about the lives of meth-cooking hillbillies.

I loved this film. It is so full of unsavory characters, and some of them scare the shit out of you. That hand cutting scene in the dark swamp was chilling. The sisters beating up the girl in the barn, heartless. Who would have thought those horrible people could find heart enough to do the right thing.

    White Material

In an unnamed African country in the throes of a volatile regime change, Maria Vial, played by the electrifying Isabelle Huppert, is trying to sustain the coffee plantation she runs with her ex-husband André, played by Christophe Lambert (Highlander, Greystoke). Unknown to her, he has other plans. With the regular army preparing to regain control, French forces have moved out, warning the remaining white residents that they're on their own if they stay behind. Featured in the Venice, Toronto, New York and Los Angeles film festivals, White Material is an extraordinarily visceral, potent and very personal rumination on a society turned upside down.

Broken Hearts Club- Despite some stereotypical gay characters and a Queer as Folk-esque plot, I think the (mostly straight) cast really came through to make this a pretty good, and funny, film.

I tried watching two low budget queer films: Socket and Pornography. Both were pretty atrocious.

Word Is Out: Stories of Some of Our Lives- This is a 1977 documentary featuring interviews of two dozen people about being and growing up gay in America. I thought it was great.
