    Arcade Fire

Canadian rock band Arcade Fire's new album, "The Suburbs," is set for release on Aug. 3, the group's label Merge announced today. The album's first single, also entitled "The Suburbs" and backed with "Month of May," will be released as a 12-inch single on May 27, and fans who preorder the album will be given a digital download of the two tracks immediately.

Arcade Fire is scheduled to perform at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago just days after the release of "The Suburbs."

"The Suburbs" is Arcade Fire's follow-up to "Neon Bible," which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in March 2007 and has sold 421,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The band has been working on the album for more than six months with producer Markus Dravs, who also helmed "Neon Bible." There has been speculation that Owen Pallett, the Polaris Prize-winning creative force behind Final Fantasy, has been working on the album's arrangements. He previously arranged strings for Arcade Fire, and fueled rumors by recently cryptically posting on Twitter that he had "just completed 10 days on the best album I've ever had the pleasure of working on."

    Re: Arcade Fire

The third Arcade Fire LP, The Suburbs, is out August 2 in the UK/Europe and August 3 in the U.S. via Merge. So far, four songs have been released into the internet wilds: "The Suburbs", "Month of May", "Ready to Start" and "We Used to Wait". But there are still 12 more songs to go, which means that there are 16 songs total on The Suburbs, easily making it Arcade Fire's most overflowing work to date (if judged solely on the number of songs involved). In other words, the tracklist is below:

    The Suburbs:

    01 The Suburbs
    02 Ready to Start
    03 Modern Man
    04 Rococo
    05 Empty Room
    06 City With No Children
    07 Half Light I
08 Half Light II (No Celebration)
    09 Suburban War
    10 Month of May
    11 Wasted Hours
    12 Deep Blue
    13 We Used to Wait
    14 Sprawl I (Flatland)
15 Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
    16 The Suburbs (Continued)

I absolutely adore this band. Funeral has almost brought me to tears on multiple occasions. Can't wait for the new album, it's been a long time coming.

P.S. I'm so jealous Captain. Take me with you?

Arcade Fire's new album 'The Suburbs' to be released with eight different covers?

Arcade Fire's forthcoming new album 'The Suburbs' could be set to be released with eight different covers.

According to reports on MBVMusic.com, the Canadian group's third studio effort will be released with multiple cover designs.

They go on to say that the ADA (Alternative Distribution Alliance), the people who distribute albums to retailers, have listed such information about the band's upcoming August 2 release in their sales catalogue.

Despite such reports, neither the group's official website or record label have confirmed such allegations.

The forthcoming Arcade Fire album, will come equipped with eight different covers. Today, Consequence of Sound has apparently uncovered all eight covers, and they're... not that different from each other.

Each cover features the same car, the same band logo, and the same basic composition. The coloring changes, as does whatever scenery the car happens to be pointed at. But every cover depicts a pretty similar suburban tableau. You can see all eight above, or a slightly larger version over at Consequence of Sound.

Maybe the whole thing is a commentary on how similar and interchangeable all these different suburban scenes are? Whatever the case, the album arrives August 2 in the UK/Europe and August 3 in the U.S. via Merge.

With the release of Arcade Fire's third LP, The Suburbs, about two weeks away (August 2 in the UK/Europe and August 3 in the U.S. via Merge), the hype cycle is going into overdrive.

First, Seattle radio station The End has 30 second snippets of every song from the record streaming on their site right now.

Arcade Fire took Jay Reatard's snot-flinging punk scorcher "Oh It's Such a Shame" and turned it into a stadium-ready, harmony-laden anthem. This band is pretty good at stadium-ready, harmony-laden anthems.

Perhaps they'll reprise the tribute during their Madison Square Garden webcast this Thursday? We'll see. Until then, watch a fan-filmed YouTube vid of the cover--

I was at the show Wednesday night and it was truly one of the best nights I have ever had at a concert, in my top 5 shows of all time. The fact that I had great floor seats helped.

I bought the CD Tuesday morning and played it non-stop for the next 2 days in preparation. Great CD btw (obsessing over track #4 "Rococo"), but thats too be expected.

The evening started with a surprise set from violinist/vocalist Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) who does work with Arcade Fire occasionally. He used a sampler to great effect and his voice is very pretty and haunting. But the songs were a bit too avant garde for me and while I didn't hate them, I was bored for most of his set. I thought he might just do 2 or 3 songs tops but he ended up doing around 7 or 8.

He is awfully cute, and openly gay.

Former MTV veejay & human music encyclopedia Matt Pinfield warmed up the audience (and plugged his New York morning radio show) next. I think he was a bit buzzed LOL.

The night finally got into gear for me as another my favorite bands, Spoon, came out and did a blistering, but too short set. I think Pallett ate into their time. I saw them headline at Radio City only several months ago so I wasn't especially upset by their short window to play, but would have loved 2, 3 more songs ("Beast & Dragon adored" especially). Awesome brass section.

After a fairly brief interval, AF took the stage to an enthusiasm I have rarely seen, and I have been to a lot (I'm not kidding, I mean a LOT!) of concerts. The entire crowd was on their feet from the second they took the stage and didn't sit down for the rest of the night. Indeed they were hooping, hollering, whistling, chanting, dancing, and singing along with every single song. I won't bother to go through the setlist for highlights (you can find that on other blogs) because their wasn't a clunker the entire night, the band was tight, Will and (especially) Regine were in fine voice and every song was a home run. They did a great job of mixing the new stuff from "Suburbs" with "Funeral" & "Neon Bible" and I especially loved how members switched around on instruments after almost every song (Regine played about 4 including drums). By the time they finished the night with "Wake up" they had the crowd in a frenzy, my voice was hoarse all day Thursday.

I did almost get into a altercation with a straight couple in front of me, they kept smoking joint after joint, and by the time the wife/girlfriend started rolling up the 4th of the night I tapped the guy on the shoulder and told him that I think it was enough, their weed was especially strong and bothered me and especially a friend I was with who has allergies. I usually try to avoid confrontation, and I'm not an anti pot scold, but they were especially obnoxious with it. At first the guy started to put up a defense, but I just cut him short and told him I could call over a security guard, he started to inch toward my face but his partner put her hand on his arm and he backed down. When he turned back and faced the stage she looked at me and mouthed "sorry", so it was cool, but I swear I was about to kick some breeder butt. Otherwise, It was a fantastic night and I can't wait to see them again ASAP.

Awww, thanks trinket and your welcome.

I should note that I had a very nice experience at the MGMT concert I saw Tuesday night at Radio City Music Hall. About the 3rd song in I noticed that there was an older gay couple just 2 rows in front of me, they were holding hands, rubbing each others backs and put there heads on each others shoulders and kissed several times, it was so sweet and they were just soooo cute together. It really warmed my heart because I'm old enough to remember a time when such a public display of same sex affection would just never happen, but that night nobody batted an eye, It's great how far we've come.

    MGMT were great btw.

    Re: Arcade Fire

Looking forward to seeing them perform on the Grammy Awards.

Arcade Fire unplugged still sounds a whole lot like regular Arcade Fire, it turns out. The band is in L.A. to perform at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, and while in town, they took the opportunity to record an acoustic session for the L.A. radio station KROQ. They played unplugged versions of the Suburbs songs "Month of May" and "Ready to Start". Watch the video below, via We All Want Someone to Shout For. It's fun to watch them all clustered in a tight circle in the studio, like they're hyping themselves up for a big game.

Also, as the band's website points out, they'll play a special last-minute all-ages show tonight in L.A. at a secret location. And as Consequence of Sound points out, Spike Jonze's 30-minute Arcade Fire short film Scenes From the Suburbs will screen at SXSW next month. The film, a continuation of his video for their song "The Suburbs", is set to debut tomorrow at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Arcade Fire Rock Out at Tiny Pre-Grammys Show

To gear up for their Grammy Awards performance, Arcade Fire decided to put on a show that was decidedly more low-key, but no less enthusiastic than Sunday's will undoubtedly be: a last-minute gig at the Ukrainian Culture Center of Los Angeles. The show attracted around 500 hardcore fans, some of whom had camped out Thursday night to score tickets at one of three purchase points in LA, and who accompanied the band's 90-minute set with frenzied choral-singing, fist-pumping and foot-stomping.

Me, too. Since it's the Grammys I thought they'd go the safe route with Lady Antebellum. Nice to be surprised for a change!!!

Ah those poor fools! But they do sound, well em 'delicious'

Not the biggest fan of award shows myself.

The Suburbs is probably my most listened to album last year. Saw them live twice last year too and they blew me away. Awesome

Yeah, 'Arcade Fries' has me cracking me up.

I like 'The Suburbs' and glad they won the award. But I loooooooove Neon Bible. 'Intervention' is one of my top favorite songs of any band.

I love the two previous albums too. And Intervention is a favourite of mine, I still remember the scene it was played in, in the first series of Prison Break!

I only got into Arcade Fire massively at the start of last year , then probably listened to them too much. Luckily the National brought an album out to distract me for a bit!

It's always good to listen to lots and lots of different stuff, so you don't ruin a band on yourself!

Even though "Funeral" remains my favorite Arcade Fire album I was very pleased "The Suburbs" was named Album of the Year.

Arcade Fire is damn amazing, and I'm glad to see Canadian music start to get out there, too many Canadian musicians who are stuck in the back of the musical bus, stuck behind their American or British counterparts.

Coachella 2011: Arcade Fire releases the bubbles

If Woody Allen's orgasmatron (from "Sleeper") mated with a beach ball, you'd have something like the white bubbles that poured from the top of the stage into the sea of people at the end of Arcade Fire's headlining set. For a few minutes, the audience pummelled and tossed them back and forth. From the stage, frontman Win Butler grinned, looking as though he was watching his kids open presents on Christmas Day.

Then the LED orbs started glowing red, purple, orange, yellow, green ... sometimes a melange of all colors. And that's when the balls stopped bouncing: Some audience members wanted to keep their power (if only to stuff them under their car seats an hour or so later) all for themselves.

In the corner of the grounds, away from interlopers, five kids dressed in neon bathing suits, neon facepaint and feathered headdresses danced around an orb they'd spirited away. They were absolutely ecstatic to circle it in a tribal conga, perhaps waiting for it to explode, talk or read their minds.

Another guy simply rendezvoused with his alone, sometimes cradling it, other times thrashing it skyward. Until he tripped on a water bottle on the ground and almost lost his grip on his prize. Then he beat a hasty retreat for the exit, possibly sensing that his position on the field was too vulnerable.
When Roger Waters played Coachella in 2008, a giant inflatable pig got loose at the end, only to float off to the dark side of the moon. Under a full moon Saturday night, no one who had nabbed a glowing orb was letting it get away anywhere. It was Arcade Fire's parting gift to the lucky few, along with an adroitly performed show, rich with hits off of "The Suburbs," their angsty, wistful love letter to simpler times.

One of the best moments of the show was the band's stripped-down edition of "Rococo," which can pound too hard with its shivering, nervous strings on the album. There were no shortage of violins and the like -- at least two players outfitted in sequins and other shiny things -- but they didn't take center stage, instead letting most of the song's tension swell between Butler's voice and the drums.

Part of Arcade Fire's force is its unstoppable sense of movement, not only musically but also physically. It seems that someone onstage is always running or leaping or grabbing a drum and pounding something out. Outfitted in her ice-skater garb, Régine Chassagne often danced like a puppet who'd just had her strings cut, when she wasn't jumping onto the drums. For "Keep the Car Running," one note was needled over and over again but so much swirled around it that it was a pulse in the darkness, a North Star for the weary.

"If you'd have told us in 2002 we'd be headlining Coachella ... I would've said you're full of ...," Butler said to the crowd early in the set. It did seem like a feat to marvel at -- Arcade Fire, once only the province of religious Pitchfork readers, now closing the second night of Coachella. Yep, it's been a good year for these guys, what with winning a big Grammy and all. And it doesn't seem like the bubble will be popping anytime soon.

On Friday at New Orleans Jazz Fest, Arcade Fire were joined on stage by none other than Cyndi Lauper. Lauper duetted with Régine Chassagne on Lauper's hit "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and Arcade Fire's "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)".

Win and Regine also joined the Haitian band RAM during their Jazz Fest set, playing a rendition of Arcade Fire's "Haiti".

Arcade Fire wins 2011 Polaris Music Prize

And the accolades keep on coming for Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. Having already earned Album of the Year at the 2011 Grammy Awards, Best International Album at the 2011 BRIT Awards, and Album of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards, the band’s third LP was just awarded this year’s Polaris Music Prize. The annual prize, which honors the best album from Canada, is selected by a small jury of music journalists, bloggers, and broadcasters.

Their first-ever Polaris Music Prize win, Arcade Fire beat out such formidable candidates as Destoryer, The Weeknd, Austra, and Colin Stetson. Along with bragging rights, Win Butler and co. also receive a $30,000 cash prize.
