    Bjork

While we wait for the follow up to Volta this sounds interesting:

The combined forces of Björk and French director Michel Gondry have produced some of the greatest music videos ever made-- including personal favorite "Bachelorette"-- so any news of another collaboration is welcomed.

At this year's SXSW Film Festival, Gondry spoke to Pitchfork about an upcoming project with Björk: "We have a very ambitious project, a sort of scientific musical. ... [It's a movie], but maybe more for museums. Like a 40 minute IMAX project in 3D," he said. Um, yes, please.

Things seem to be in the early stages, as Björk's publicist could not confirm the project at the moment.

Great news!! I'm psyched that they will be collaborating again. Bachelorette is phenomenally brilliant. Isobel remains my personal favorite though. I just love the black & white cinematography and the whole mood.

i used to idolize her like i never have with anyone else, but i kinda lost interest after selmasongs. part of it was me growing up, of course, but i also think shes getting more and more inaccessible and self-indulgent. her 90es work had, for all its weirdness, a lot of pop and fashion to it, which im kinda missing in her more recent work. still, at least shes always interesting and still makes good things every now and then. just my personal opinion.

Bjork, Morricone Share Sweden's Polar Music Prize

Italian composer Ennio Morricone and Icelandic singer Bjork have won the 2010 Polar Music Prize.

They will be invited to accept the award, which includes 1 million kronor ($130,000) each in prize money, at a ceremony in Stockholm later this year.

The Polar Music Prize is Sweden's biggest music award and is typically shared by a pop artist and a classical musician. It was founded by Stig Anderson, manager of Swedish pop group ABBA, in 1989.

Prize committee Chairman Alfons Karabuda said 44-year-old Bjork personifies the border-breaking attributes sought by the committee, "bravely and without compromises."

Bjork sang in various Icelandic bands in the 1980s and rose to international fame with her solo album "Debut" in 1993. She has since released five more solo albums as well as film soundtracks and compilations. She also won the Cannes Film Festival's 2000 award for best actress for her role in Lars von Trier's "Dancer in the Dark."

"With her deeply personal music and lyrics, her precise arrangements and her unique voice, Bjork has already made an indelible mark on pop music and modern culture at large, despite her relative youth," the prize committee said in its citation.

Morricone, 71, has composed more than 400 film scores, including the iconic theme from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and other spaghetti westerns directed by Sergio Leone.

The prize committee said his "congenial compositions and arrangements" help lift "existence to another plain, making the mundane feel like dramatic scenes in full Cinemascope."

"He built up a brand new kind of music that set the tone for half a century of film music, but also influenced and inspired a number of musicians in the spheres of pop, rock and classical music," the committee said in its quotation.

Last year's award was shared by British musician Peter Gabriel and Venezuelan composer Jose Antonio Abreu.

Björk and Dirty Projectors to Release Collaboration Mount Wittenberg Orca

Last May, Björk and Dirty Projectors debuted a new collaborative suite called Mount Wittenberg Orca. It made its debut at a benefit for Housing Works in Manhattan, an event put together by former Pitchfork contributor and current Stereogum writer Brandon Stosuy. And that's about the last we heard about this fleeting meeting of the musical minds. Until now.

This April, Björk and Dirty Projectors entered Brooklyn's Rare Book Room studio and recorded an updated version of Mount Wittenberg Orca. The 20-minute, seven-track piece was written by DP leader Dave Longstreth. It was be self-released digitally on June 30 with money raised going to the National Geographic Society.

    Mount Wittenberg Orca:

    01 Ocean
    02 On and Ever Onward
02 When the World Comes to an End
    04 Beautiful Mother
    05 Sharing Orb

Björk made a song for the animated Finnish children's film Moomins and the Comet Chase. You can watch the video for "The Comet Song" below. In the song, Björk sings about a comet that seemingly might obliterate the Moomin world as we know it-- kinda dark! The song is out on iTunes now, with all proceeds from its sale going to UNICEF Pakistan childrens' charities.

Björk recruited Antony Hegarty, singer for Antony and the Johnsons, for "The Dull Flame of Desire," a duet from her last album, 2007's Volta. On "Flétta," a track from the Johnsons' October 12 release Swanlights, she returns the favor. Listen below!

Unveiled Wednesday on Antony and the Johnsons' Tumblr, "Flétta" is a tender duet from two of music's most unique voices. A simple piano melody puts the spotlight on the Icelandic songstress' vocals, as Antony's shivering bellow follows her lead.

"Flétta" is just the latest in a flurry of activity from Björk, who released "The Comet Song" to benefit UNICEF's work with flood victims in Pakistan, and collaborated with Dirty Projectors on the seven-song benefit collection Mount Wittenberg Orca.

    Listen to "Flétta" below:

    For Immediate Release

SOLAR SYSTEM FOR iPAD RAISES THE BAR (AGAIN) FOR ELECTRONIC BOOKS

London, England—December 22, 2010—Solar System for iPad, the first publication to emerge from the recently announced partnership between Faber and Faber and Touch Press, is available today worldwide to download from the Apple iTunes App Store.
Eight months in development, and with a production budget approaching 1 trillion dollars (if you count location filming by NASA), Solar System for iPad sets a new standard for interactive books. The title combines stunning fully manipulable, space data based 3D realizations of the planets and moons with an intelligent specially written text by best-selling Faber author and former CalTech radio astronomer Marcus Chown.
This new electronic book follows on from The Elements, the runaway best seller published by Touch Press to coincide with the launch of the iPad. Over 160,000 copies have now been sold, and The Elements has just won a place in the forthcoming Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2011 exhibition at the London Design Museum.
Theodore Gray, creator of The Elements, comments, “What sets Solar System for iPad apart more than anything is that it is not just an app or reference guide or tour, it’s a real honest-to- goodness book you can sit down and read.”
Like The Elements, the new title includes a song that plays once on the very first launch. This haunting and majestic track has been specially adapted by Björk from her forthcoming Biophilia project and for the moment is available only in Solar System for iPad.

I love Bjork to death! To me she is one of the greatest musical geniuses in the world. I love just about everything she does. There aren't too many artists that have dozens and dozens of songs that I not just like, but love.

I have a huge playlist in my windows media player with all her songs that I listen to almost daily. Her music is very weird, especially her videos and I love it. A genius can't be like everybody else and be a genius!

Bjork 'halfway through' new album and planning tour

Bjork has said that she is halfway through finishing her new album - and hopes to play live before 2011 ends.

Speaking to Icelandic newspaper Fréttablaðið, the singer said work was well underway the follow-up to 2007’s 'Volta' and alluded to a tour plan for later in the year.

"Hopefully I will be able to be on tour in the fall," she said.

She also said she was wary of giving too many details about the album away, adding: "I have had some bad experiences with a number of things before. I'm very superstitious. I go into the studio with a plan to go do what I have in mind, and then the idea is half dead."

The singer revealed one of her new songs is inspired by experiences she'd had after attending a conference organised by National Geographic magazine.

"I saw 100 talks and met eccentric people who had been in Africa for four years with lions and insects," she said. "Then one night after drinking whiskey with them I began to hear stories. This is one of the collaborations I can talk about."

    Björk’s Karaoke Protest:

Icelandic singer Bjork held a three-day karaoke marathon to help protest a Canadian company’s takeover of a power plant in her country. Reportedly, Vancouver-based Magma Energy Corp. recently boosted its stake in Iceland’s HS Orka power plant. During the karaoke event, Björk and her supporters circulated a petition that calls for the government to consider revoking the takeover. The petition, which reportedly has more than 45,000 signatures, states, “For 100 years, good people protected our natural resources and public interest. [Then] the sale of natural resources and irresponsible access to them began. Now it is time to stop that unfortunate development.” Magma Energy declined a request for comment by The Associated Press but has in the past defend its deal in Iceland.

When two completely singular voices link up to record together, it can be a fascinating thing. Omar Souleyman is a Syrian musician whose music draws from a number of traditional Arabic styles but also uses dance beats and synthesizers. The American label Sublime Frequencies has released a few of his records in the West, and his live shows have been drawing rapturous reviews recently. And now we've learned that he's recorded a collaboration with Björk.

Souleyman and Björk's collaborative project will be available on limited 12", CD, and digital download sometime this year. According to a press release, it's "the first-ever major western pop release to feature Syrian dabke and Iraqi choubi music."

Thank you for the Björk news I was unaware of all of it! Count me in as a huge fan since The Sugarcubes. "Life's Too Good" was the first CD I ever bought. I'm drooling at the thought of a new album!

    Re: Bjork

Björk has announced a series of UK shows planned as part of this year's Manchester International Festival, during which she will preview material from her forthcoming album, Biophilia.

A press release describes Biophilia as not only an album but also "A multi-media project encompassing music, apps, internet, installations and live shows". Her six-show, three-week residency at Manchester's Campfield Market Hall will feature her performing with collaborators as well; the festival will also assist Björk in bringing the Biophilia performances to other cities after the Manchester residency. Also, the press release outlines an intriguingly strange assortment of instruments that will be used for the show: "a bespoke digitally-controlled pipe organ; a 30 foot pendulum that harnesses the earth's gravitational pull to create musical patterns-- creating a unique bridge between the ancient and the modern; a bespoke gamelan-celeste hybrid; and a one-off extraordinary pin barrel harp." Cool.

You might remember hearing about Biophilia in the beginning of the year, when a new iPad app titled Solar System, featuring a three-minute instrumental taken from the project, was unveiled. Well, NME reports that Björk has pulled a Gorillaz and partly recorded the new record on an iPad, and plans to release the record as a series of apps for the electronic device. In other words: keep your fingers crossed for a Björk-ified Angry Birds! Check out the dates for the residency below.

06-30 Manchester, England - Campfield Market Hall
07-03 Manchester, England - Campfield Market Hall
07-07 Manchester, England - Campfield Market Hall
07-10 Manchester, England - Campfield Market Hall
07-13 Manchester, England - Campfield Market Hall
07-16 Manchester, England - Campfield Market Hall

Björk Reteams With Michel Gondry for Video Starring Marker, Eraser, and Clapboard

Björk managed to stun her legions of adoring fans today when she posted an image on her official Facebook page (pictured on the right) of a clapper board with the name of her newest single "Crystalline," which will be included on her new full-length album Biophilia, due out later this summer. It also bears director Michel Gondry's name. Next to it lies a red marker with a bundle of tape wrapped around the end and an eraser.

As you may already know, Björk and Gondry have a long history of making music videos together -- having worked on "Bachelorette," "Hyperballad,"and "Declare Independence," to name a few. All of which have gone beyond the norm of what is usually presented as a music video. No two are ever the same and this one proves to be no exception.

Gondry, who is known for his quirky, childlike take on directing, stuns us with what will inevitably be three-and-a-half minutes of this scene with some flashing lights and yarn thrown in for good measure. As shown recently on Hipster Runoff, Björk, like her native homeland, has fallen into something of a budget crisis, which is fine considering the arts-and-crafts approach of Gondry's videos.

The video shown below will help to give some insight into the duo's creative process, which is reminiscent of a first-grade classroom:
