    Re: Aguilera: Bionic [Spring 2010]

^^ lol you're not anti-Christina..yet you're already proclaiming that her album is "officially a flop" 1 week before it's actual release?! I think with Christina though she's always raising the bar with her albums, so fans & occasional listeners tend to expect a lot from her. Christina IMO got two type of fans those who favours her BALLADS (Beautiful - Hurt) heavily and those who actually enjoy the UPBEAT music (e.g. Fighter - Candyman). I honestly think those who are expressing their disappointment for this album are the ballad lovers. Her ballads on this album ARE NOT AS STRONG compared to STRIPPED & B2B. She's made songs here that even Britney Spears can actually sing (e.g. Elastic Love) and that's another reason I think why people are criticizing her, most Christina Aguilera songs are UNTOUCHABLE. Anyway I love the album coz I am obsessed with her voice, she said it from the beginning that it's about her having fun....so why not let her?!

I did say "critically speaking". I don't judge an album's success by how it charts, I'm concerned with the quality of the music. Bionic had potential to be her most interesting work yet but the content doesn't match her awesome album art. I compare this album to having a best friend who decided to wear a horrible outfit. Sometimes you just have to tell them "Girl...no. Try again" rather than lie to them and tell them they look good.

Two atrocious singles, a video that should've never happened, and an album that is 95% filler. I'm more upset that her label though it wise to not let her have more creative control of this effort. The two singles reek of "we need what we think is a hit" record industry paranoia. It's no surprise the best songs (Elastic Love, Birds of Prey, You Lost Me...and yes, even Vanity) are also the most adventurous she's ever done. I was rooting for her, but she didn't deliver like she promised.
Sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with all of this. First, you should know this is coming from a gay guy who is actually NOT a pop music fan (or anything mainstream, for that matter). Yet, I am salivating all over these songs. Yes, the "Not Myself Tonight" video is a total rip-off of Madonna's "Human Nature", that's quite obvious, but videos are basically obsolete in this day and age.

Back to Basics was what you'd consider "filler". Bionic, on the other hand, is the best example of an artist experimenting with different sounds on pretty much every track (well, the best recent example, at least) in a way that is very unique and refreshing. I'm not sure what most people consider to be a flop, but, in my opinion, this is definitely not one. It's ambitious and soulful, while still retaining Christina's style. I haven't heard "Birds of Prey" yet, but I would say 98% of this album is amazing ("Prima Donna" and "Sex For Breakfast" are the only ones that kind of stick out as the weaker links to me)...

If you're going by what music critics say, you're in trouble, because their opinions are just as extinct as those damn music videos. I'd say this album exceeds expectations!

I respect your opinion (not usually into mainstream stuff here either) it's just not my cuppa tea, is all. The concepts are great, but she gets a D+ on her execution. I only read reviews to poke fun at them these days, so my opinion is all me....just like yours is yours. You should do yourself a favor and listen to Birds of Prey as soon as possible....it's the best song on the whole thing.

She hit like no high notes in that live performance.

I know she's a great vocalist and all but that was a shitty vocal from Christina, kinda expected more. I mean, she's Christina Aguilera for fucks sake!

Stronger Than Ever is the Power Ballad of the Album.

Birds of Prey is hypnotic, it almost sound like she collaborate with Marilyn Manson instead of Ladytron.

Bobblehead is hilarious... "Uh, I dun' get et"

Definitely a classic case of production releasing the wrong tracks as singles, and the wrong tracks on the CD.

The label obviously freaked out and ordered more commercial, generic songs on the album. Which is ironic, considering it's exactly that that has been this album's undoing so far. People want something different and innovative, and it's exactly what Christina has been delivering since Stripped. I don't know why this era didn't turn out that way.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Christina fan, and as such, I've pre-ordered a digital and a physical copy of the album, but I think it could have been so much better and so much more successful.

As for the bonus tracks, I absolutely LOVE Monday Morning and Stronger Than Ever, but I was disappointed by Birds of Prey. Maybe hearing it in high quality will help me to appreciate it more.

    I agree.

I'm a Christina fan, she has a music box of a voice that can sell anything. But I have yet to read/hear/see an interview that she has done I've enjoyed. Ever. She always comes across very vain, insecure and downright childish. She doesn't need to constantly throw shade at other artists the way she does. It's ironic considering how much she sings about female empowerment.

I think Christina's problem is that she lacks a real music identity to call her own. Each album she comes out with is always a reflection of how "real, authentic, and the true me." I'm all for her trying new things, but at some point she is going have to hit her stride and stick to something.

I disagree, respectfully. I thought Back to Basics was fantastic and out of all her albums was something really great and really her. I believed her on that album. Bionic, though good not great, falls in line with everything else that has been mastered by her fellow princesses.

She's still somewhat of a young artist (she's only released five albums, afterall), so she has time to do that. Out of all the little pop princesses out there, Christina is the only one who musically resembles Madonna, who went everywhere from dance club music in the 80's to R&B and electronica in the 90's (and we all know where that woman is today). Even if she continues to experiment with different sounds/genres, that's more refreshing and interesting that putting out the same stinker album every other year like most of her peers.

I'm not saying I didn't like Back to Basics; I just prefer this new one to it. I also sensed the passion and authenticity she brought to that album, which was different in its own way - but personally, there wasn't a wide range of style on it. I think that's why she's really the only mainstream "pop" artist I like from this generation; she isn't afraid to try new things or go against what is expected (again, like Madonna) - and that's a sign of a true artist. For someone of her status to decide to work with people like Le Tigre, Peaches, Sia, and Ladytron (all of which aren't necessarily popular, mainstream artists) says alot about their willingness to separate herself from the mediocrity going on in music and bring something new to the table. I'd rather listen to what she's doing than 98% of the other "art" out there today.

I love Monday Morning. It shoulda been her first single. It's totally different from anything anyone else is doing. It has a dope 80s Cruel Summer type of vibe.

Even if she continues to experiment with different sounds/genres, that's more refreshing and interesting that putting out the same stinker album every other year like most of her peers.
I don't see any parallels between Madonna and Christina, granted X-tina loves to "reinvent" herself but that's where it ends. Experimenting with various music genres doesn't necessarily translate to career longevity. Madonna is the exception not the rule. Especially when X-tina hasn't really released anything profound to brag about nor anything exciting. She does top 40 ear candy (with the occasional inspirational ballad here and there). Nothing wrong with that. I think she'd wished she had kept the momentum going between albums, if Bionic performs like her first two singles. On one hand I admire her for being able to take time away and produce an album on her terms. However, she's not someone who needs to take that much time away nor does it take 3-4 years to produce quality work. She's singing about her "WooHoo" and "kissing all the boys & the girls," 10 years into her career on her 4th studio album.

Back to Basics may have been limited but it was a sound she could call her own nonetheless. If she were brave enough she could have had her own little niche doing that type of music. For all her work with these obscured producers and songwriters they couldn't come up with stronger material? Nothing on this album sounds innovative or fresh, IMO. Mostly all of the songs are garnering comparisons from everyone to Katy Perry, Lady GaGa, and Britney. Christina also enlisted a slew of top hit makers for this project (Polow da Don, Ester Dean, Tricky Stewart, Cathy Dennis) whose contributions for the first half of the record actually drive the album's futuristic theme.

In all fairness though I don't remember reading a statement from Christina claiming she'd be inventing a new music with her 4th album. From the very beginning she clearly stated that it's about her having fun and looking forward to the future. STRIPPED & B2B both had remnants of her childhood (bullied in school = BEAUTIFUL, domestic violence = I'M OK & OH MOTHER). She clearly stated too that she'd be doing something SHE'S NEVER DONE BEFORE and BIONIC clearly proved that - a FUN albeit sexually charged album. TOTAL IMMERSION to whatever genre she sets her sights on is what sets her apart from any other artists out there both past & present. Isn't it a huge compliment to Christina to be compared to the likes of Madonna, Janet & Whitney/Mariah? Those women HAVE DISTINCT MUSICAL SIGNATURE, they are known for their different style, and we have Christina who seems to be an AMALGAMATION of all those artists. Why should she settle for one type of music or genre? She's clearly proven over and over again that she's very versatile. I mean no disrespect to Madonna since she's clearly a living legend but CHRISTINA AGUILERA is a true MUSICAL CHAMELEON. In every album she release she takes us, her fans to a journey & clearly tells us where she's at in her life. She's only 29 let the woman have fun for god's sake! I LOVE BIONIC, right now I cannot decide whether STRIPPED is still my all time fave album of hers. OH btw the comparisons to whatever is out there right now are inevitable, but just like in the beginning of her career IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN HER VOICE THAT SETS HER APART, almost ALL THE ARTISTS OUT THERE (Gaga, Katy Perry & Britney) are nothing but a bunch of autotuned queens really.

I think it's funny that the 'bionic' songs are the one's that didn't make the cut for the standard edition.

    "Medley"? Hmm.

Interesting that she keeps singing her 7-year-old Stripped tracks to promote a brand new album...

Desnudate as the next single?!?! What the HELL is her problem?!?!

It's not a bad song really, but it can't compete with what's out there already. All these hyper-xxxplicit singles come off too gimmicky and dated. The Alejandro storm is coming and she needs to be better prepared and this Blackout refugee of a song is not gonna help her.

So, I finally heard the songs from the deluxe edition. Why was there so much hype over them? They're decent songs, but they're nothing amazing. Out of the songs I heard, Stronger Than Ever was the strongest song of the bunch. Oh well, as long as I have Lift Me Up and You Lost Me, I think I'll be fine.
