Cool video. But I always imagined the video for "Gone Baby, Don't Be Long" would consist of Erykah riding around town in a '72 Caddy on a hot summer's day. At least that's what I think of when I hear the beat for "Don't Be Long."

What makes you say that? On average, Erykah has made us wait three and a half years between each album. This is 2011, so we only have two more years to go.

I know Erykah dawdles abit when it comes to releasing albums but it's not like she's ever made us wait for an entire decade..unlike her contemporaries, Sade, D'Angelo, Maxwell and Lauryn Hill. Erykah at least will release a follow-up before the apocalypse strikes.

Flying Lotus himself announced that he was producing for Badu last Sunday during a show at the University of Southern California. The news comes on the heels of FlyLo announcing on his Twitter that Badu will DJ during the Stones Throw/Brainfeeder Pool Party that's going down this coming Sunday, April 17, during Coachella. Suffice to say, the mind boggles as to what these two artists could come up with together.

ERYKAH BADU TEAMS WITH FLYING LOTUS FOR NEW PROJECT

California experimental producer Flying Lotus has revealed that he is working on a new project with eccentric singer Erykah Badu.

The collaboration seems like a natural pairing for the two progressive musicians, as Badu takes her electronic-hip-hop influences the R&B route and Flying Lotus generally filters his to the dubstep-electronica world. Furthermore, Badu has a history of working with left-of-center beatsmiths like Madlib and J Dilla, both clear influences on Flying Lotus's dusty, soulful electronica.

FlyLo announced the collaboration via his Twitter account on Monday (April 11), when he wrote, "Waiting for Badu to get here so we can start Day 1 of our project together." He had previously revealed that Badu will be DJing the Coachella Stones Throw/Brainfeeder Pool Party in Palm Springs this weekend, alongside himself, Madlib, Dam Funk, Peanut Butter Wolf and others of their ilk.

The two initially teamed up for a surprise collaboration on Badu's 'Gone Baby, Don't Be Long' video from her 2010 album, 'New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh),' which the beatmaker co-directed back in February.

Stay tuned for further news of their project after the two DJ together and perhaps make a few other surprise appearances this weekend during Coachella music festival.

Coachella 2011: Erykah Badu keeps her cool during glitch-filled set

For an artist like Erykah Badu, the Coachella mainstage could prove a challenge.

Badu’s live shows of late have earned praise from loyal fans and mixed reviews from critics, one reason being she's the type of performer who likes to take her time, and push at the boundaries of audience expectations.

She is known to riddle live offerings with impromptu vamps and erratic set lists, and is known to close down the house many a time. Shows at both the Greek and the El Rey theaters in Los Angeles were cut off after Badu had exceeded her alotted time; lights were turned on and she was told to end.

But Badu skipped her usual performance ritual: she still had her customary tea set on stage, but she didn’t have time to light her incense or start to build a slow-burning groove. Instead, after having been only a few minutes late, she launched into “20 Feet Tall,” the lead track from the second installment of her "New Amerykah" series.

“Keep in mind, I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my … ,” she said after having winced at the feedback from her microphone -- a glitch that recurred for the rest of the show.

Flanked by a band and backup singers that played to her vocal strengths, she remained poised when the sound failed her. Her patience, however, began to wane. She appeared to shoot some stern looks to workers resting on the side of the stage before seeming to abruptly cut her set nearly 20 minutes short.
“Thank you, that’s all I got,” Badu said to the confused crowd. “Serious. That’s all I got …”

Whether it was a ploy or a final warning to the crew, it worked. Though she then limited her singing and concentrated on an experimental jam session full of electronic backbeats -- which she crafted onstage –- when she did return to the mic, the problems ceased.

But right when she was getting into a moment, as her voice fluttered over a run of notes, her mic was cut; she was out of time. And even though the folks backstage restored sound for a moment to finish a note (an olive branch?), the set quickly ended again.

Erykah Badu | Out My Mind, Just In Time (Movement One)

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJeiaGw2mis&feature=share[/ame]

A beautifully simple video for Erykah Badu's 'Out My Mind Just In Time', lifted off her most recent album New Amerykah, Part 2: Return of the Ankh. Directed by Badu herself, this interpretative dance-performance piece works perfectly behind what is, one of Erykah Badu's most accomplished pieces of work. ...Just, beautiful.

    Artist: Erykah Badu
Song: "Out My Mind, Just In Time"
Producer: Erykah Badu, Georgia Anne Muldrow

Erykah Badu Revisits 'Baduizm' at Rock the Bells

She's also considering performing it with an orchestra

Fourteen years after the release of Erykah Badu's debut album, Baduizm, the singer is performing it in its entirety at the Rock the Bells festival. After she finished performing in San Bernardino, California, on the opening night of the tour, Badu told Rolling Stone that she hadn't been sure what to expect before taking the stage.

"Itís the first time Iíve done Baduizm from top to bottom, so I wasnít sure how it would go off," she said. So how did it feel? "Itís a little slow because in 1997 Baduizm was a movement, it was a tribe of people, a cult following who felt that same way, but it doesnít translate live the same way. But maybe itís nostalgic to people."

Her performance was one of the high points of the festival Ė but Badu has her own expectations to live up to. "As a performance artist, in the spirit of Yoko Ono, in the spirit of Josephine Baker, in the spirit of Nina Simone, I know what kind of reaction I expect or want to get," she says. "I know when the audience and the artist become one living breathing organism. It's happened a couple of times, but I want it to happen all the time."

Badu was confident, though, that by the time Rock the Bells hits San Francisco this weekend, and then New York and Boston in subsequent weeks, she will have the performance where she wants it to be. "I think [in San Francisco] weíre going to have a better understanding of what weíre doing. Iíve been on tour, so Iím hot, Iím good."

As the only singer on the main stage of RTB this year, she says she's just honored to be in the company of the hip-hop royalty on this year's tour. "Iím a B-girl in my heart. I write like an emcee, I used to be an emcee before I was a singer and I just feel the energy. Iím just happy to be amongst Ms. Hill, Talib [Kweli], Mos [Def], Nasir, Common, Cypress Ė itís amazing to me," she says. "You can feel the energy, feel the excitement because itís like a high school reunion every time you do a festival with like-minded artists."

Performing the album for the first time live is also opening her to the idea of revisiting Baduizm in other settings, or maybe even other albums. "I imagined being in front of an orchestra doing Baduizm before because I think itís very fitting for the type of mood Baduizm is. That would really be beautiful," she says. "[And] New Ameryka Part One and Part Two might come off a little better in front of this audience because itís a little bit more contemporary, it feels the frequency of what this audience is about, what weíre about."

After she finishes with Rock the Bells though she'll turn her attention to new music, as she is working on multiple projects, including one with Warp recording artist Flying Lotus, whose Cosmogramma won Best Electronica Album at the Independent Music Awards this year: "Weíre four songs in," she says. Plus, there's a chance there'll be new Badu music next year Ė she says she's also working on another studio album.

not a surprise but still very excited about this!

Flying Lotus and Erykah Badu making an album

What happens when you put two of music’s skewed-but-brilliant minds in the studio together? We’ll find out the fascinating answer to that in good time, following the news that L.A. beat wizard Flying Lotus is teaming up with enigmatic soulstress Erykah Badu. The revelation came in an interview with Badu in The Wall Street Journal, where she also revealed there’s something cooking with the world’s biggest cartoon band.

“I’m making an album right now with a guy named Flying Lotus,” she said. “I’m working on a project with The Gorillaz. I’m always doing something.”

There isn’t much more to go on than that, but fans of both artists will surely be weighing up all the possibilities of how this’ll turn out. One thing’s for sure, the album won’t fall into the ‘pop techno cornball ass music’ category. FlyLo is of course locked in for the Summadayze and Summafieldayze circuit this festival season, so be sure to listen out for any hints of Badu’s voice colouring his sets.

I ddn't believe him, i thought he was making up stories, but he told me he was a small man about 5ft7 or 8'' but that he had a big dik, about 12inches. And he , King Donald, kept saying that Erykah Badu was his stepdaughter. I still dont believe him, but now I am sort of wondering, maybe he was telling the truth. idky i am bringing that up here.

BBC Radio 4 is currently running "Black Is a Country", a two-part series on the Black Power and Black Arts movements, hosted by Erykah Badu. The first segment, which focuses on the political climate of the late 1960s and the evolution of the Black Arts movement, aired on Thursday-- listen to it over on the BBC's website. The second installment will air this Thursday.

Badu also contributed an audio-track narrative to the excellent 2011 documentary The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975. Watch the trailer for the film, below.

Malaysia bans Erykah Badu show over tattoo

Muslim-majority Malaysia has banned a planned concert by Erykah Badu after a photograph appeared showing the Grammy-winning singer with the Arabic word for Allah written on her body.

The American R&B singer was scheduled to perform today in Kuala Lumpur, but some Muslim groups said Badu was an unsuitable role model for young Malaysians after seeing a publicity photo of her with what appeared to be temporary tattoos of the word Allah on her bare shoulders.

A government committee that includes police and Islamic policy officials decided to forbid Badu's show because the body art was "an insult to Islam and a very serious offence", Information Minister Rais Yatim said in a statement on Tuesday.

The photo of Badu had "triggered public criticism that could jeopardise national security and cause a negative impact to the government's image", the statement added.

The 41-year-old, Dallas-born singer had already arrived in Malaysia. She can stay as a tourist but will not be allowed to perform, an Information Ministry official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to make public statements.

Razman Razali, managing director of the show's Malaysian organiser, Pineapple Concerts, said his company hopes the ban will be reversed.

Badu is "worried and dismayed", Razman said. She was slated to perform in an auditorium that can hold about 3000 spectators.

It was the first concert by a Western performer to be banned in Malaysia in recent years. Several other stars, including Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne, were told to dress modestly while performing.

The photograph of Badu, which also appears on her official fan website, attracted attention after Malaysia's most widely read English-language daily, The Star, published it Monday.

Yesterday, the newspaper apologised to Muslims for what it called an "oversight", saying it deeply regretted any offence sparked by the photo, which was "inadvertently published". The Home Ministry summoned The Star's editors to explain the photograph, which caused some Muslim activists to demand the newspaper's suspension.

Erykah Badu Accepts Malaysian Concert Ban Over Allah Body Art

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - Soul singer Erykah Badu said Wednesday she holds no grudge against Malaysia's government for barring her from performing after a photograph of her body art offended some Muslims.

More than 1,500 people had bought tickets to watch the Grammy-winning American singer at a Kuala Lumpur auditorium Wednesday, but Malaysia's information minister announced on the eve of the concert that it could not proceed because a promotional photo of Badu with the Arabic word for Allah painted on her bare shoulders was "an insult to Islam."

"It's sad, because we traveled a long way," Badu told a news conference. "But I'm totally understanding of (the minister's) protection of the laws and its people. He doesn't want anything to happen. I'm good with that."

Erykah Badu will be featured on Janelle Monae's next album on the track Q.U.E.E.N.:

"The Electric Lady" will see a fall release, and Monae added that she will soon be releasing a new track on April 22nd. "It's titled Q.U.E.E.N. and it features Erykah Badu."

Monae even gave a precise time that the song will be drop on the 22nd: "19:45 military time."

"I'm really excited about it," she chirped. "This song is inspired by private conversations she [Badu] and I have had and continue to have. She's a great friend to me; she's like a big sister and it's a song about private dialogue that she and I have had."

Monae explained that she looks to Badu as a musical idol, adding that they are very supportive of each other's crafts, speaking on the phone often and constantly bouncing ideas off of each other.

"We try to celebrate each other as much as possible and call one another when we've done something that the other one really admires and loves. She was one of the first female artists to reach out to me and take me on tour with her as well so I'm forever grateful for her in my life," she said.

Under the spell of Erykah Badu

Red Bull Music Academy lays down A Conversation with the soulful sister in New York.

Red Bull Music Academy New York continues to drop big things during its residency in the city that never sleeps. The latest slice of musical royalty to feature at the event was the always inspiring Erykah Badu.

During ďA Conversation with Erykah BaduĒ the multi-talented, multi-award winning artist opened up about what keeps her metronome ticking. From her early days of growing up and dropping out to Pink Floyd, to present day distractions such as fresh creation DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown.

Erykah Badu needed little introduction before speaking at the Iris and B.Gerald Cantor Auditorium at Brooklyn Museum. Her seminal works like Baduizm and the New AmErykah series have successively upped the ante in terms of what can be done within the soul spectrum, fusing cosmic b-girl bravado and street-wise poetry with the forward-thinking sounds of producers like Madlib, Flying Lotus or Bonobo to create a sonically varied body of work selling millions of albums in the process.

And when sheís not busy reminding contemporary r&b of its own intellectual and soulful possibilities, Erykah Badu heads up her own record label, Control FreaQ, and has even been caught on the ones and twos recently.

Check out the Fireside Chat with Erykah from Red Bull Music Academy Radio.

Erykah Badu explains how social media is revolutionizing the music industry

DALLAS — Social media has changed the fundamentals of communication. In the world of music, platforms like Twitter and Facebook serve not only as branding tools, but also as humanizing elements that directly connect artists and their fans.

Red Bull found a unique way to intertwine these two aspects of social media through the company’s nationwide Sound Select concert series. Local musicians Erykah Badu, The Cannabinoids, Larry g(EE), and Dustin Cavazos join forces Friday, July 26 at Prophet Bar for the Dallas installment. But instead of offering tickets for sale, the two opening acts distributed 1,200 tickets so the “most enthusiastic” social media marketers could enjoy their hip-hop and funk flavors for free.

“Choosing fans who are active will make for a totally different kind of room,” said headliner Badu by phone Tuesday. “It’s a different kind of energy. They were selected -- it’s different, it’s special.”

Though she did not hand-pick any of the show attendees, Badu believes social media is revolutionizing the music industry. In the hip-hop community, specifically, the R&B/soul singer said the power is truly with the people, as they dictate which artists deserve notoriety and “make sure they are loved and seen and noticed.”

R&B performers like Drake and Janelle MonŠe, she used as examples, were thrust into the limelight by their public following rather than record label executives.

Badu is a social media maven herself. Under the Twitter handle @fatbellybella (which she created during her pregnancy with daughter Mars), Badu attains a following of nearly 900,000 with whom she engages in conversation daily, posing questions and retweeting the responses she receives. The Dallas diva also has more than 46,500 followers on the home video app Vine, which she describes as an artistic outlet.

Badu digitally interacts with her fans in a way unparalleled by other musicians, though she says it's a product of human nature, not marketing. (Badu personally mans her Twitter and Vine, while Badu World controls her Facebook.)

In this 21st century, she said, it is platforms like Twitter and Facebook -- and concerts like the one at Prophet Bar on Friday -- that engage creativity and friendship.

“We learn from each other. We debate about social issues, politics, religion, race, art, sex, love,” Badu said. “I guess we’re just being basic human beings dialoguing.”

When Badu isn’t growing her Internet presence, she can oft be found in the studio. When we caught up with her Tuesday, Badu just finished a recording session, one of many over the last two weeks since returning from tour. She made no solid promises of an album to come, instead claiming simply and serenely that she is “recording songs.”

“I’m working on a new album, of course, all the time, since I was 9,” Badu said. “I’m in a really creative place and I’m curious what it will become.”

She's the queen of collaboration -- though she seemed surprised to be called such a thing. Her partnerships have been vast this year: In June, she performed as artist-in-residence with the Brooklyn Philharmonic in a show that “crystalized” her 2008 release New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) in classical form. British electronic producer Bonobo and indie soul artist Janelle MonŠe, too, enlisted Badu for tracks released in 2013.

"Okay, so that does make me the queen," Badu said. "... It has to be something really special for me to [collaborate]."

Badu is currently focusing her energies toward Friday night’s show and said she looks forward to seeing Larry g(EE) and Dustin Cavazos live for the first time. She harped on the fact that the crowd selected to attend will make the concert even more special.

“They all have something in common: It was by fate, by timing that they were chosen,” Badu said. “It make everyone feels connected as a family, ‘cause that’s what we are when we’re up there. We eventually become one living, beating organism during the show.”

Oooooo! I bet that was good!

I'd love to hear orchestral versions of Hip Hop/The Healer, Honey, Soldier, and The Cell.
