Let's see if we can get this short and clear. The point was not that India has a particularly backward railroad system: this all started when talking about what the British "left", and in the late 1940s the system could not be in its best shape, when even Britain itself was not. Thence, the double problem of keeping up to date a very extensive system that was already straining during the Empire era, and doing it while making it dependant of a newly established and, most important, very heterogeneous plurinational, very extensive, state. That was it.

I'm impressed that your expertise extends to the state of the Indian Railway post-Independence. It would be interesting to hear you post more of your observations about the specifics the Indian rail system faced that made it backward and broken in that period. Was it not transporting people? Did it not move cargo? Did it not offer services to a variety of customers? Was it half-African? I DO think it's fair to say Indians are half-African.

Oh, and as for the argument itself, let's see if you would actuallly defend that a 1960s or 1930s IBM punch-card machine is better than a 2012 one, or steam trains better than a computerized railroad system. You sem to be switching from defending the modernization of India to the praise of the older, comparatively backward legacy left by the British, while all I was is not that India's railroad has been consistently backward ever since they took it over from British hands, but simply that what the British left was a dinosaur very hard to deal with. You do not seem to get that my point is not attacking the Indian, not even the British, but to SIMPLY SHOW that technical heritages become an even bigger burden than more purely monumental ones, like stone gates and palaces.

Per Indian history, I don't think your version is accurate. India inherited and managed a complex system with aplomb. I don't dispute that it was hard to deal with. Both before and after Independence the rail system was not backward and falling to pieces.
