That show is a riot: the interesting element of it is precisely how it gives conclusive proof that the British have definitively evolved (involve, if you want) past "The Empire" to become as strange to it as the rest of the world... maybe even more, precisely because they are past all the ruthlessness necessary to build empires, that lesser powers today still maintain... as a sign of barbarity.

It is silly to pretend that they "gave" it like "giving away": the built it because infrastructures are vital to any developed economy, so they built it for themselves, for the Empire, for the lands as far as far they were part of the Empire, even if in a looser but far wiser way than the usual conquering, centralist empires.
What they did is rather "leave" behind a humongous dinosaur falling to pieces in the shape of the huge and backward railroad system of India, as a neigbour to the stonework of Bagan or Angkor Wat.

Isn't it always pathetic that the third or fourth largest European empire, and one of the ten largest ever, but surely among the top five as far as development and lasting influence goes, should consistently be ignored?
I think that, apart from the French themselves, and in that rather the old ones who were young and proud in the 1950s, nobody else considers France as ever having been a "grrrrrreat" empire like the British of even the Spanish, let alone the Mongol or the greater Chinese dynasties.
