Thread: Glee! [merged]

    Re: Glee! [merged]

The Duets episode renewed my love for this show. I thought it had really been slipping lately, but this episode proved it still had it (though not consistently).

Everything was just perfect, with the closing song managing to surpass perfection.

The one thing that I dont like about this show is the inconsistency of the writing. Some episodes seem brilliant while others are trash.

^ Yes, I have to agree. It's very uneven this season. I hope it gets back into the groove of things, and develops the characters more along the lines of last season.
For all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are these, 'It might have been.'

i agree. when ryan murphy mentioned in the oprah show that she is the greatest new singer of her time, i was like.. "that mercedes chick has a way better voice, lol"

I see what you are saying all i was referring to is that the scene its self just did not sit well with me. I think that Kurt did need to have a dose of reality but there was probably a better way to go about it. Maybe it was just the dialogue that i could not get passed, but all in all the episode was ok.

I heard the songs from the upcoming Rocky Horror themed episode and I was less than impressed. Guess I have to watch the episode before I judge completely.
Basically the worst of the bunch...

It seems to me they are "de-gaying" the Ho Show, and toning down or completely neutering the sexuality. And some of those lyrics they are substituting are just murder. This is a tribute? More like an insult.

"I'm just a sweet transvestite, from Sensational, Transylvania!" WTF?

Remember those cool flashback moments she had on the first few episodes? Like when she was talking about all the school groups she joined... I loved those things.

I find it odd that they are trying to sell Finn as the school jock yet he never shows any skin, and they refuse to show his chest for some reason even tho we have seen Puck's, Sam's and even Mr. Schue's.

Maybe Cory is not really "in shape"?

Last season we did have plots about fake pregnancies, magic pills and Rachel quitting the club then not, then quitting again... they are sort of trying to give Glee a different kind of flow this time around which I'm ok with. I just want them to "fix Rachel". They sort of ruined her character. Also, a bit less Kurt and a little more everyone else.

Supposedly the Rocky Horror episode is 'abstastic," and we will see the abs of Sam, Schue, and Finn.

"I'm just a sweet transvestite, from sensational Transylvania."

For all the good this show has done for the LGBT community, Fox still felt the need to get their dirty little fingers into it and drop the "T" from being uttered in the song.

And I don't know if anyone noticed that they made Mercedes play the part of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Hardly a transvestite, being a woman and all, but I guess that is how they rationalized eliminating "transsexual" from the song. There goes my hopes of seeing the infamous Frank-N-Furter outfit on one of the glee guys...they just stuck Mercedes in the Frank-N-Furter lab coat and put a pearl necklace around her neck.

I don't really have a problem with the change in lyrics, simply because it's what would happen in many high schools if they were even allowed to do Rocky Horror. As far as Mercedes cast as Frank, well, who else would do it? Finn would not appear in the costume, Sam is definitely Rocky, Chris begged to be Riff, Mike can't sing, and Artie fits the role of the nerdy professor (and not because of the wheel chair). The very first person to "play" Frank at the midnight showings in NY was a woman, so why not have Mercedes do it?

We're still talking about Glee doing a tribute to a show with a transvestite, an incestuous couple, and several bisexual couplings. This will introduce Rocky Horror to a whole new generation of viewers. I think that's a good thing.

As far as the change in lyrics goes, I doubt the intention was an attempt at authenticity in portraying a high school version of rocky horror (personally, I would think the "pelvic thrust" would be the first to go).

I am not sure who else would be able to play Frank-N-Furter (I'm quite surprised it wasn't Kurt), but, you must admit, that, when you hear the name Frank-N-Furter, the last person you think of for the part is an overweight african-american woman.

I'm not surprised that it was censored. Mind you, RHPS is a rated R movie and most high school students are under 17. Yah, I questioned Mercedes playing frank-n-furter also. As for Chris and rift-raft, check out 1:40 as to why he got that part...

It's hard for me to think of anyone other than Tim Curry! lol

But other than him, I wouldn't really think of her as the last person to play the role. I think that role opens itself to be almost any sort of person, which is why it really does lend itself well to its cult status.

It's just interesting how one week they talk about scissoring, and the next they censor out heavy petting...

Also, I heard John Stamos was gonna play Frank n Furter, but the network decided against it!

Because it would make him look gay, and heaven forbid we have any of that. Hence the Rocky in gold boxers rather than gold tight fitting trunks.

Actually, the Rocky in boxers thing I can forgive, since part of the plot of the show is Sam actually wearing a true-to-form Rocky costume, which he deems too revealing, prompting him to ask for gold board shorts.

That's a convenient way out of having the actors feel too gay. Just write it into the script.

I wasn't saying Glee would show the couplings. I was saying that this whole episode is a tribute to a movie that has them. Many Glee watchers might never have seen Rocky Horror, and I would imagine it will have quite a few new converts after this episode.

And they do say "transvestite." They replace "transexual" with "sensational" apparently.

Stamps has played gay before, and bisexual/omnisexual as the emcee in Caberet. He was game to play whatever.

Apparently producers of the show think Glee watchers are the type of juveniles who aren't allowed to go out past midnight to catch the late night double feature picture show. I guess they will have to get permission from their parents to rent the dvd. After which, they will drop dead from shock when they realize the actual movie has gay tendencies.

This show is one of the gayest shows on television, Spiff, so I'm not really seeing a strong foundation for your points, I guess.

You seem to have this extremely hypersensitive, knee-jerk type reaction to accuse homophobia on even the slightest, most trivial of issues.

I was not familiar with the bizzareness of TRHPS... had to see it myself. I can see why this was a huge deal on its time. And the music is great.

I'm actually surprised Glee would choose this for a tribute, but then again, this is Glee... over-the-top Glee as usual. Still, they have to tone things down tho... it IS a high school. What I've heard sounds pretty good TBH. The "sensational" bit is understandable and shouldn't be an issue at all. Most of the songs Glee did are from the tamer first part of the movie... so I say its all good.

Thought that it was good. Entertaining. Of course it is not as good as the Rocky Horror, and they did cut out a lot of good stuff. Just wished that we saw more of Sam in those gold shorts!

I thought the show was just OK. They did a good job with the music, but they did not do TRHPS justice, but then again, this is television.

I have to say as someone who is not a fan of RHPS I thought this episode was really good. In fact it actually made me want to try watching RHPS again (never got past the first 30 mins or so). I agree with the above more of the sam in the little gold shorts would have been great and Finn in briefs instead of boxers would have made night.

I expected the worst, but was surprisingly pleased with the RHPS episode.

They couldn't make it into an appropriate High School play - so the episode became about how they couldn't make it an appropriate high school play, but still managed to squeeze in some good numbers.

    Very clever!

Mercedes did a great job on her one song despite my dread. And Mr. Shu again showed himself to be a very flawed character, rather than a simple hero. (And how great does he look without a shirt?)

    Good work all around.

I enjoyed seeing Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf. It was a nice nostalgic touch. I'm sure Susan Sarandon would never deign to appear on Glee. And she avoids pretty much any discussion of having been in RHPS.

Clearly a show about a high school glee club that airs at 8 PM was never going to tackle the sexual wildness that is RHPS, but I enjoyed the episode for what it was.

I enjoyed the take on male body issues. That's rare to see.

I thought John Stamos did a great job, and loved Shue and Emma in Touch-a-Touch-a Me.

This Rocky Horror was fun, but completely "useless" plotwise, unless they decide to keep Sam's insecurity as a part of the character.

It wasn't completely plotless, just not much. Mr. Shu learned to put aside his feelings for Emma despite him still having them because she is getting better. Although the autotune from Emma was painful to listen to.

Seriously though, without being plot driven, it's like watching a 60 min music video.

I dont know if this has been mentioned. I didnt see it posted . . . .

Glee Episode Hits The Wrong Note; “dressing up like a tra**y.”

Many viewers of Tuesday night’s highly anticipated Rocky Horror-themed episode of Glee were surprised to hear the popular show use the defamatory word “tra**y.” The episode in question was already under intense scrutiny by fans curious how it would handle some of The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s more adult themes. What actually ended up on screen was upsetting to many viewers.

The character of Mike Chang offered to play the campy character of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the school’s production of Rocky Horror, but had to back out because his parents didn’t want him The casual manner in which the word was used is jarring, even if he may have been repeating what his parents said. The show’s inclusion of the word “tra**y” was made all the more confusing by the decision to change the word “transsexual” to “sensational” in the song “Sweet Transvestite.” As many commentators have pointed out, it seems strange that Fox would want the word “transsexual” cut from a well known song, but find “tra**y” acceptable.

This inclusion of this slur is particularly alarming given last season’s powerful episode in which Kurt’s father chastised Finn for using the word “f*g.” That episode sent a powerful message to the show’s young fan base that words have power and they can hurt.

Unfortunately the larger problem here is that the word “tra**y” has become an easy punch line in popular culture, and many still don’t realize that using the term is hurtful, dehumanizing and associated with violence, hatred and derision.

Glee certainly isn’t the first network TV show to use the word, and it popped up as recently as last week in the October 18th episode of CBS’ How I Met Your Mother. Nor are LGBT-oriented TV programs exempt from using transphobic language, as demonstrated repeatedly by the gay men on Logo’s reality show, The A List: New York. In fact, the catch phrase “hot tra**y mess” was widely popularized by gay Project Runway winner Christian Siriano, who later apologized.

GLAAD urges all entertainment industry creators to stop using the word tra**y for a cheap laugh. GLAAD has reached out to Fox and Glee producers to discuss how to move forward with this matter. Check GLAAD Blog for updates.

I dunno, but I don't feel that tranny is so offensive. For example, when I might ever say it, it's really in a cute, non-hateful way.

I don't feel it has enough context to be as offensive as the n-word or fag/faggot.

Not to marginalize any trans-people, but I'm pretty sure anyone who wants to be derogatory to a trans-person is probably going straight to 'faggot' rather than tranny. But that is just my opinion.
