Now that I am most definitely going to Summer Slaughter - just print out my ticket this afternoon - I am checking out the bands I haven't heard of before... so far, I like Fallujah, do not like Thy Art is Murder or Within The Ruins, but at least with the latter they're trying not to sound like every other deathcore band since Whitechapel:

Re: Other rock/hard rock/heavy metal fans?

So, Summer Slaughter was Sunday and I feel like posting my opinion on it.

My brothers and I arrived late and only heard the last song by Fallujah, so I can't really comment on them.

Within the Ruins - Wasn't my thing, sounded metal-core and had too many breakdowns in a song that left them not sounding interesting at all.

Decrepit Birth - Pretty much fucking awesome, I am not going to lie because I am not so familiar with their records/songs but I really enjoyed their set. Sounded great and sounded better than they do on albums. Singer was fun to, was really into the crowd, he smoked weed on stage for the first half of the set as well.

Origin - Not so big on em, they were good but nothing to write home about for me. They're a band that seemed to stick to a specific Death Metal formula that has been already done to death, but maybe I don't listen to them enough?

Goatwhore - Never listened to them before this concert, my older brother was all about them saying they were sick and I enjoyed the shit out of them. Sounded great, nice mix of black/death metal. Absolutely loved the vocals.

Thy Heart is Murder - I was really not happy with this band at all, I was even borderline angry with how high this band was on the set list over some of these other bands. Every song consisted of at least 4 breakdowns, this band had absolutely no depth or substance at all to them. Their songs consisted of filler between the breakdowns and that was it, they sucked.

The Faceless - Fucking sick, played a nice mix of stuff off all 3 of their albums. I'm not really a fan of stuff from their latest album but it sounded good live and they were awesome to watch. Played 2 of my favorite songs live, "An Autopsy" and "Xenochrist".

Dying Fetus - Holy shit, this band is absolutely fucking flawless live. I haven't actively listened to Fetus for years, so I am not so familiar of a lot of the stuff from their newer albums but they also played a good mixture of shit. They just killed it, I really can't express enough how good they were and how awesome it was to see them again after over 10 years. The last time I saw them was at a small bar in Philly, which was great too.

Morbid Angel - I'm not too much into Morbid Angel, but they sounded good. My younger brother wanted to hear some of their real old shit, but they didn't play a lot of it and he wasn't ultimately happy with their set. Although we did not stay for the whole thing because we were both beat and very sore. Plus I got kicked in the head during fetus and wasn't really happy about it, lol.

Overall though I really enjoyed my time, it was a fucking awesome show even with the bands I didn't like so much. I just don't know if I can handle going to fests that much anymore with how sore it left me. From now on if I go to one, I am going to schedule off of work for the next day too.

^You thoughts nearly mirror mine(especially on Thy Art Is Murder, which was my cooldown and frown period, and Within The Ruins, who are nothing special at all), except for Morbid Angel, because we were lucky enough to get a set with mostly old material, and what wasn't old, I was very happy with(Where The Slime Live, Ageless Still I Am, Existo Vulgure, etc). Personally, with a full crowd, I think I had the most fun in the pit with Goatwhore and Dying Fetus.

It was a shame, in GA at least, that the crowd wasn't that behind Decrepit Birth. I was disappointed only because I was hoping their appearance would mean new music, but eh, maybe one day.

Also a shame you missed Fallujah - I thought they were absolutely impressive and the vocalist, I'd love to date.

I also, in my time away, went and saw Nine Inch Nails with Soundgarden and The Dillenger Escape Plan, who were ALL great, but personally, I actually enjoyed DEP and Soundgarden a little more, only because on record, NIN isn't my favorite band, so I went into seeing them for the 2nd time with smaller expectations than the other two. I'm just pissed that I wasn't further down when DEP was playing - Greg Puciato actually came deep into the crowd looking good as ever...

I used to like some bands because of their breakdowns when I was younger, it was one of those things where I didn't "know better". When I did like that stuff I still couldn't imagine that I would like Thy Art Is Murder.

People were definitely into Decrepit Birth in Philly, but then again any time I have been to a heavy metal show in Philly they will almost mosh to anything. It was still awesome and they got a good reaction from the crowd.

I didn't do any moshing or anything, but Goatwhore did something similar to the walls of death, but they did it from 4 sides. I forget what they called it but it was pretty nuts.

On another note, I wish I could have gotten to see this band.

I can understand that - when I first started going to concerts on my own again after my Marilyn Manson phase went by the wayside, one of the first bands I liked that fell into what is now known as slamcore(because hardcore kids and names, I guess?) was Emmure, believe it or not. I can't stomach them now(Frankie is fucking weird and tries way too hard to be a bad ass, and then there is the music), but for a short time, I was all for it with the same strength that I was into bands like Soilwork, Slayer and Otep.

That band above reminds me of a band I wish I saw live in their early hayday - Eighteen Visions. Another band I liked but, aside from the first 3 CDs, can't stand to listen to now.

Yeah, I know Eighteen Visions, I never saw them though.

When it comes to Dillinger Escape Plan I actually never got to see them with their original singer, but they were still pretty fucking awesome. Shooting fire over the crowd and all that. The only album I really liked with the new singer was Miss Machine, couldn't really get into anything beyond that. Really glad I saw them though, they put on a real awesome show.

Not so much into Between the Buried and Me now, but I saw them not song long after the release of their first album. They were really good live, one of the things I remember was a member of a local metal band was running around naked in the pit during their set. Which reminds there was a guy in a Banana suit moshing at Summer Slaughter.

One of my favorite shows ever was when I saw A Life Once Lost which was a record release show for them, The End and Lamb Of God. Pretty much complete insanity. The vocalist of The End was unreal live, had the most unbelievable squeals I have ever heard, too bad later they got a new vocalist and weren't so good.

It's so weird thinking about the shows/concerts I have been to now because I really didn't realize how many I have been to.

This was a "metalcore" band that was from Philly, they were band from early to mid 2000's. I was lucky enough to see them live on 2 different occasions.

This Day Forward was another band from Philly that was really good and I got to see live. They were amazing live.

I'm a classic rock/hard rock fan - spanning from the 70's through today. Favorite of them all is Rush, to me. As relevant today as they ever were.

I have decided that my next two concerts are Machine Head and Primus, because that combo works for no reason at all and I want to see Primus for the first time. Only gripe about the latter is the GA venue - The Tabernacle is expensive as hell, each time I go.

No shame in liking anything really. The more music we all personally enjoy the better.

I really tried to get into this, but it's just really not my thing. Too much Stone Sour, not enough Slipknot.

But yeah, there is no shame is liking what you like - unless it's Rings Of Saturn or new Emmure.

I truly enjoy Tony Kakko's voice. And it's proving to be aging well. I don't know why they're revisiting their debut album but it's a good chance to compare I guess.

Same song, 14 years apart. He's 39 now so I guess he was about 25 on the debut's recording.

On the other hand, this shows that glam metal could indeed be on the more metal side musically-speaking.

Take the song title, and you have one of the most kickass metal bands - hey, if Girlschool is good enough for the god Lemmy, they're good enough for me.

Lineup changes . Sometimes it's not possible to keep the same lineup of course, but after a while with some bands it doesn't even feel like the 'real thing' anymore. There are probably many bands that are huge names but only have like one member left from their glory days I probably wouldn't even bother to go to a concert of TBH.

Slayer fits that right now - with Hanneman passed on to the land Dio now rules, I don't think I can justify paying top dollar to see what remains of the Kenny King project(unless Tom takes over writing).

Also, Job For A Cowboy, Napalm Death and Machine Head, new releases! Gonna be a great end of the year/beginning of next year... especially since I plan to see ND live for the first time ever in life.

Been listening to some Circle Takes the Square lately. Band has been around forever but has few releases. Earlier when it came to As The Roots Undo they had more of a screamo sound, but with Decompositions: Volume Number One they infuse a lot more metal into their sound. I never saw them live, but I know I'd go absolutely nuts if I did.

Been listening to Sannhet a lot lately because of their new album coming out. Through them I have discovered Wreck and Reference, which I can say is not going to be a band for everyone but definitely something that I find myself enjoying. Consisting of 2 members, one using a sampler the other a Drummer. A very dreadful sounding band.

Just came across them looking for something new to listen to. Screamo/Hardcore-ish. The language is Italian, wish I understood it because I'm enjoying it. This album in particular has free downloads.
