I haven't really liked a Killswitch Engage album for a while. My friend turned me onto the newest album where Jesse has returned and I really dig it.

*Raises hand*. Different styles of rock, including Hard Rock and (tuneful, without screaming as the main vocal style) metal are my favourite styles despite liking tons of styles (including so-called 'gay music' to varying degrees). It goes well-back. I have so many thoughts about it but I'll write them later when I have the time . I risk writing an essay .

Since the age of about 11 or 12, i`ve been into Rock, Hard rock and metal. Since i grew up in the end of the 80`s and beginning of 90's, i liked everything from thrash metal, some glam, then some grunge.. and now i like some of the old stuff, and some more recent.

Favorites include: Finntroll, Judas Priest, Anthrax, Dio, Maiden, Testament, Accept, & lots more

I'm going to Summer Slaughter this year, because it'll give me the chance to FINALLY see one band I always happen to miss when they're in town - Morbid Angel. So yeah, pretty fucking excited.

    ^Nice.

I am moving and I found a CD wallet and a stack of CDs in an old CD case I had. I found a burnt Nightwish album and the first HammerFall album that I actually bought. I haven't listened to either of these band in ages and both bands are actually still together which weided me out for some reason. Although Nightwish has had a vocalist change since then.

This is a great album, though.

I haven't followed Nightwish in quite a while, but i heard that they replaced Annette with Floor Jansen. VAST improvement IMO. Floor used to front After Forever, which was very good, and gave a great live show.

I checked out some songs with Annette and really didn't dig any of it. Can't wait to hear their next albums with the newest vocalist, though.

I loooooove Sonata Arctica. Power metal is a really good style IMO - so upbeat and fun, but with so many similarities between bands, I kinda think choosing one band in particular and sticking to them you're gonna get your sufficient fix. I do understand the criticism of 'you've heard one band you've heard them all'. I guess it just depends which bands whose individual characteristics you prefer given the similarity in style across the board. I first heard this on Last.fm, and loved it straight away.

And a few of their actual fast power metal tracks.

I guess Dragonforce are the most famous power metal band...but I find the one album I got of theirs pretty mediocre (while I really love the two Sonata Arctica albums I've got) and don't really like them a ton, besides this song.

So I suppose even though the style is similar in most bands, that doesn't mean you'll like each band the same.

I got into quite a few power metal bands when I was younger and there are a few albums I still listen to today, like early Sonata Arctica stuff. Early Hammerfall was good. I feel with Dragonforce was when it got too gimmicky and started to give off the vibe that kind of metal was something to laugh at. I know Power Metal was a bit cheesy to begin with but it just ended up getting a lot worse.

Turns out this tour is stopping by in Philly, my younger brother called me earlier and asked me I wanted to go when it comes in August. Should be fun. The Faceless is also there, they're pretty decent. Origin is kind of boring from what I remember, haven't listened to them in years though.

I've only seen Origin live once - at the first Summer Slaughter I went to(which was the last time Necrophagist played at it). I don't remember them being bad, but like you I haven't really listened to them since. I really, really want to go to The Masquerade and see the tour as usual, but if I could get a plane ticket I'd go to Philly... my best friend lives there, so it'd be even more worth it.

Besides Sonata Arctica I mostly like glam metal in metal (which isn't really metal, it's just called that). I realize it's not everybody's thing but there's lots of good stuff IMO.

    etc.

I understand those who don't like it though, especially if they lived during that era (I was born in '91 lol, so missed it). SO many second-rate bands would've been on the charts with that style. I think time's been good to the better songs of it though.

I think that started with hearing Def Leppard in a former in-law's car.

Besides metal, a lot of my discoveries have been in the more punk and ska-punk styles and I found lots of them on Extreme Sports kind of games. Usually a great soundtrack on those. Some of my fave discoveries from them:

    etc. etc.

Some bands I've gone on to buy full albums of. They haven't disappointed.

Yeah, I went CD shopping with a friend yesterday and saw the new Sonata CD there and said I like this band. He'd never heard of them but I told him they were power metal and he said something like 'oh, like Dragonforce'...yeah that's a bit sad. Dragonforce (despite that one song of theirs I really like heaps) have kinda become the 'face' of power metal which isn't so good.

I love them actually, and Bill Robinson is another heavy metal lead that's really about free love and having fun.

Hopefully Rob Halford's vocals don't suck

Vocal deterioration is a huge bitch to rock stars. My fave rock singer's probably Klaus Meine, and he still sounds almost as good as the 70s and 80s to me. I'm thankful for that .

One of my other faves, Paul Stanley sounds embarrassing these days trying to sing his old hits. So sad, his voice used to be amazing. Even as late as 2003 at the Kiss Symphony concert.

KISS have been the band I've collected most albums from I admit . I'll always love them, but admit I've been listening to them less in recent times. I'm sure it's just a phase and I'll come back around to them though. That's what usually happens with me and bands. Rarely do I ever stop liking one I've liked before completely (apart from like Good Charlotte and stuff! lol)

He could hit any note he needed, so much power and great tone.

Halford still sounds great. Of course, he doesn't sound like he did in his prime, but his voice is still awesome. With Ronnie James Dio, he has to be in my favorite vocalists of all time. Plus, the fact that he did a big thing for himself and for gay metal fans by coming out of the closet a decade ago is a big plus. I saw Priest last year in concert, and other than the fact that he wasn`t moving much on stage (had a very very bad back.. i saw him a while after in an interview, he was in a wheelchair, had to get an operation if i`m not mistaken. He said he was dealing with the situation.), Priest gave quite the show, and his voice was fine.

Here`s a song off their upcoming album:

As for KISS, they were my favorite band when i was a teen. Paul Stanley (the gayest straight man alive) was always a great frontman, but he was never in the same league as a vocalist as guys like Dio and Halford imo. In the recent years, Stanley has lost everything in his voice. He sounds terrible. I wouldn`t want to see KISS live now (other than the fact that they have 2 guys pretending to be Ace Frehley and Peter Criss in the band).

^ I agree his voice is completely shot now - it's tragic. I still think prime Paul could easily compare with any of the greats though - his voice was acrobatic. I respect your opinion though . BTW, I was listening to Dio today (a song from the band Rainbow came onto my MP3 player ).

Rob Halford in his prime was a beast, as was Dio. My fave as mentioned is Klaus Meine of Scorpions - I think for the harder rocking material, a lot of rock/metal greats had more power than Klaus, but I live for Klaus' tone on the Scorpions' ballads - exquisite.

And a latter-day one, showing very little change in the voice at all.

Plus, it's not like he was bad on the hard-rocking material either

Now Rob Halford...well, yeah he was a beast!

His voice tone wasn't quite as sweet as say Paul or Klaus, but power? Just listening to him in his prime you had the feeling he could knock down houses . Like in the song I posted. Yeah I also like listening to him sing quite a lot. I have a few Priest albums.

Actually I think even Demolition from '01 with a replacement vocalist (despite being panned by critics and fans) also had some decent songs on it.

Sabastian Bach is another underrated one who could compare with some of the greats IMO:

He still sounds good these days actually. I heard a recent-ish solo recording on Last.fm recently.

yeah that pic was back in the days of their first 2 albums.. well back in teh day when Skid row was relevant (i was a teen back then)

He`s been fighting with the skid row guys ever since. They can`t stand him. Who knows, i sometimes try to separate the person from the music.. for example Pantera: Phil Anselmo seemed like one of biggest prick. Axl Rose was another one of them. And then you have the ones that just seem insane. I'm thinking Dave Mustaine.

I wish I could separate some peoples' music from the person that created it(or had a hand in it), but the fact is I can't praise Burzum for being "pure black metal(not that it's really my genre)" while knowing Varg is a violent neo-Nazi, or listen to Ted Nugent because he's a giant fucknut, moreso than Dave Mustaine, who is the only one of the three so far I've seen live. If people like Iggy Pop or Wendy O. Williams or Henry Rollins were huge racists, I don't think they'd have any of their lore and success - but they sure would have a dangerous following.

I try though - I don't want metal musicians to pacify themselves and be "PC" because that's not what it's all about, and it's not why I love it... I just also don't want to be supporting guys so far from the fringe that I'd feel like an idiot.

Welcome! I'm glad I found this thread too. Apart from specialist threads like this it seems it's rare to find gays on the net who can appreciate these bands.

KISS are my favourite band (on paper). I know a lot of other bands have way more substance, but I could never ditch them even if I'm often in the mood for 'better' bands lol.

I am not the biggest fan of Metallica, but sometimes I go listen to some older stuff. A couple days ago I was listening to "Ride the Lightning" and made a joke post on facebook saying that it would be cooler if the album was released "July 23rd, 1984" (which is when I was born ). A friend told me that my music taste has gotten progressively awful since we lived in with each other.

^ If he thinks early Metallica is awful, he's a hard one to please . Ride The Lightning is my fave of theirs!

    You'll be banned soon.

So, enjoy this song, and do the opposite.

LOL, I discovered it a couple days ago when looking through MetalInjection - that's some power in that mans' voice.

Dead Kennedys - This Could Be Anywhere

The album caused a huge controversy due to the band name, album title, Frankenchrist, lyrics and the album art shown in video, "Penis Landscape" (1973) by H.R. Giger. The DKs were sued because of it and became totally embroiled in litigation for years, leading to their disbandment. It was one of the albums that led to the Parental Advisory warning labels on recorded music.

Now, before '99 (I still like heaps of later singles but I may be in a minority) The Offspring were putting out some good punk.

    Always liked Dexter's voice.

Another band who I like in general but found more 'guts' in the early stuff:

Too bad more power metal isn't of this quality:
