    Other rock/hard rock/heavy metal fans?

It seems that when it comes to music, gay men are often stereotyped as liking pop music and female singers, which a lot of gay men do, and there's nothing wrong with that, of course, but usually when I tell straight guys what I listen to they're shocked. Anyway, my point is, how many other guys on here are into rock/hard rock/heavy metal? And have you experienced anything similar to what I have? (i.e. straight men being surprised you listen to Metallica or Lamb of God rather than Britney and Madonna). Just interested to see what the response is.

I was just at Summer Slaughter, and will be at Mayhem and Thrash & Burn.

Pretty safe to say, i'm a metalhead. And it's probably safe to say, that people are shocked double that a gay black guy listens to what i listen to.

By the by, i like Carcass, Suffocation, Fuck The Facts, Exhumed, Arch Enemy, Lamb Of God, Otep, Nothingface, Alice In Chains, Morbid Angel and the like...

I have a very wide taste about music. That's include some kind of pop, although only some indie groups, some electronic music, and all kinds of rock, but hardcore. I generally listen to classic rock of 60s and 70s, hard rock and some metal.
I don't like that supposed gay music.

My favorite band is AFI, BTW. I'm so excited for Crash Love (the new album, out this year) I can't control myself.

Yeah but thge saddest part is how people keep labeling themselves when it comes to music. But maybe that's just me, I can listen to all of those four you meantioned just fine.

Um....I haven't known ANY that are racist, actually. They're usually some of the coolest, most open-minded, most laid back guys. Not all of them, of course, because when you start to generalize things get messy.

As KTheLibra stated, metalheads are usually some of the more cool laidback types you'll meet - especially at shows. You have trouble makers(as with ANY scene), but i've not once spoken to or got harrassed by anyone that was racist. I'll test that theory on vacation, but in Atlanta, the scene down here is mixed.

While metalheads might be very cool... it's Oi! boys that could very easily be racist.

I like a lot of music... some bands I have been into...

    The Acacia Strain
    Job For a Cowboy
    Despised Icon
    See You Next Tuesday
    Psyopus
    Poison the Well
    Converge
    Between the Buried and Me
    Sincebyman
    HORSE the band

I've grown away from a lot of heavier, screaming music including some of those bands. Just really into rock in general....

its funny cause its quite the opposite for me. since most people don;t peg me as gay when i tell them my fav bands are

Slipknot, System of a Down, Kittie, and others they arent that shocked, but theres this guy at my work that started playing a song, and i asked who it was, and it was Cher, and i didn't knwo any of her stuff.

so he was shocked that i didn't know any Cher, or Janet Jackson, i do like some britney or rihanna here and there though.

W/E… What do you make of this band? Ever hear of it? (They’ve actually been around for a few years…)

Here are a few songs from their 2011 album Aesthethica…

    Yes, i love heavy metal.
Sepultura, Celtic Frost, Venom, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Exodus, Anthrax, Slayer, Carcass, Napalm Death, Death, Possessed, Kreator ect. are among my favorite bands. I could go on forever listing bands i enjoy.

  33. #33

Re: Other rock/hard rock/heavy metal fans?

^ Some really good bands there – I, too, especially like Celtic Frost, Slayer, Napalm Death (and also too-many-to-mention, other NWBHM/Grindcore bands, like Cathedral and Godflesh) I listened to while growing up, but even as a lttle kid, this was my favorite band…

I think because of their loosey-goosey style of playing (and especially, drumming), which I later realized was actually heavily influenced by jazz…

Yes, I love it! To prove the point, I'm currently taking a break from working on an essay about heavy metal in Russia and listening to my Metallica playlist.

To answer the OP (I don't care he posted this two-and-a-half years ago :P), I get a similar reaction in that people are surprised when I tell them that I'm gay given that I'm rarely seen not sporting a heavy metal band shirt.

Someone may have noticed I’ve been posting songs by this band in another thread – ‘Songs in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement’ in the ‘Hot Topics’ forum (Ooh… So hot!) – but they belong here, as well.

Just consider, for example, how much influence they had on some of the greatest ‘heavy metal’ bands of the 1980s…
