    Bellybutton pain?

Within the last year or two I get this sharp feeling inside of me, it comes and goes throughout a day every couple months. It feels like someone's jabbing a knife downward through my bellybutton and just twisting it around inside. If I'm sitting down it hurts too much to get up and vise versa. It spreads from my bellybutton and downwards and while it's happening I can't even pee because it feels like I'm tugging on something. I'm not sure what it is or what sets it off but it's really painful and it scares me. Has anybody else ever felt this or know what I'm talking about?

three words "See a doctor" I cant even begin to guess what it could be, just explain the problem to a doctor, and say how long its been going on too.

    See a doctor.

It could be your appendix (assuming you still have it). It can 'leak' for a long time and cause that kind of pain.

Yeah, I still have my appendix. I guess I'll schedule an appointment. Usually it only lasts for a few minutes but I've felt it for two hours now and the first thirty minutes I couldn't even get out of this dumb chair so apparently it's not getting any better on its own. It's never lasted nearly this long before. The pain is at least tolerable now but still there. Hopefully it's not something too serious.

Check for what's called rebound pain. Lie down flat on something firm, hold in your abdomen with the tips of your fingers from one hand, keep it there for a few seconds then let go real quick. Do you get a sharp pain? That's all I remember of the test as I screamed in pain at that point. Mine was leaking for almost a year before I finally got it cut out.

Wow, that didn't sound like fun. I was kind of scared to do that. It hurt pressing on it but there was no pain when I released the pressure and stopped sucking in. Though my pain faded away maybe ten minutes ago and I feel completely fine now. If this was an hour ago I'm sure I'd be screaming. That's why I'm afraid I wouldn't be taken seriously, because of how quickly it switches from one extreme to another. The doctor would see the me being able to walk around and get up and down with ease, not the me frozen in place who's afraid to move because it hurts so bad.

What you're describing is an atypical umbilical pain.

You need to see your family doctor for some further testing.

Have you been able to get some sort of diagnosis? I have suffered a similar pain which occurs unpredictably and sporadically since I was in my mid-teens. Mine is usually triggered by an orgasm - I have seen a couple of doctors over the years but no-one has been able to diagnose the cause! As you say, by the time you visit the doc the pain has usually stopped! I'd be really interested in hearing if you have more success than I have in finding out what the cause is! Thanks

I've had this same thing before. It usually happens to me when I'm moving out of an apartment (i.e. doing a lot of lifting and on my feet all day). I always assumed it was just a mild hernia. The pain is always gone by the next day. I would be interested to know if you had a diagnosis also.

I get it to. Every once in awhile.. I mentioned it to my mom before too, and she told me she would get the same pain every once in awhile... I don't think it's anything to be alarmed over.

No, I never did go to the doctor. Mostly because I don't have the money or medical insurance or anything. I figured out at least one trigger for me is the same as yours Emphram314, the heavy lifting and excessive strenuous activity. Over a week ago I woke up with the pain though so I'm not entirely sure what all causes it. But eh, like I said, I'll just manage until I can get it checked out. I talked to my mom and she said when I was younger I had an umbilical hernia, maybe it could somehow be related? Have any of you had previous problems like that? Though I'm pretty sure I don't have a hernia, there's no bulging or soreness the majority of the time.

I had that several times in the past. It usually follows lifting or moving something really heavy. My navel leaks sometimes and it's like a dark yellow. When I first had it, the doctor said it's because my end of the umbilical cord never closed properly. I don't remember the name of the diagnosis. Check it out to ease your mind. Good luck, hun.

    Re: Bellybutton pain?

First of all, good health to you all. Rather than starting my own post I decided to search for the topic "Hernia". So here is my little story. I knew I had a hernia, one of my doctors told me so a couple of years ago, he also told me that it was not a big deal and to just be careful and report any sudden changes. Over the last year I have experience abdominal discomfort but it usually goes away in a day or so. For the last couple of weeks I have been feeling pressure in my abdomen and also a lot of itching in the area. Because our water heater broke and was leaking water all over our garage, I had to move a lot of the boxes and items on one side of the garage in order to get to the water heater, I ended up working like a field horse all day. I am freakishly strong, so it is not a big deal to lift heavy objects without even thinking about it. Well, I really damage myself this time! The next day we got the appliance fixed and then I was totally sore all over and exhausted, then the trouble really began, bouts of abdominal discomfort and pain and a lot of itching around the abdominal area of my belly button. I kept my partner up to date on the situation and was getting ready to make an appointment with my doctor. Sunday came around and I could not wait to see my doctor on Monday because I was feeling terrible. I spent the whole day Sunday, with terrible abdominal pain, the itching got worse and when I took a shower in the evening I noticed that I had a red spot on my belly button, upon further examination I noticed that my belly button was all read and puffy, I showed my partner and he agreed that I should go to the doctor first thing Monday. We went to bed, but I was not well. I awoke around 4:00 am and could no longer tolerate the pain and discomfort. So my partner took me to the emergency room at the local hospital, not my idea of a good time.

They gave me some pain medications through and I.V., took blood and urine samples and I also had a "cat scan". Several hours later the doctor came in with a diagnosis; I had aggravated the hernia and now it started to trap fat cells, who in the process got a terrible infection causing the redness and itching around my abdomen. I was then given a heavy dose of antibiotics, more pain medications and also an ointment for my itchy belly. I was also made to promise that I would call a surgeon as soon as possible to have a consultation and eventually surgery as soon as it can be done.

So, that is where I am at right now. Going to the surgeon on Monday taking a lot of medications and unable to do anything, because any activity could, very possibly, make the hernia grow and the infection spread. Tomorrow is my partner's birthday, so I am breaking out of the house while he is at work, shhhhsh.... Got to get him at least one present, will probably not be able to go the fancy dinner I had planned for him or have several martinis to celebrate and furthermore I will not be getting any sex anytime soon.

I am posting this mostly to vent, but in hopes that some of you will be able to learn from my experience, especially those of you who have that "let's wait and see what it is attitude". Shit does happen and when it does, it is always better to be safe than sorry, I am feeling stupid, frustrated and quite lame at the moment. It will probably be a couple of months till I can resume my normal activities. Fuckity, fuck, fuck, fuck!
