While I don't think this is the forum to question centuries of British tradition and monarchy, I have to agree they are just people and that it's all a bit silly when you get right down to it. But that's from an American perspective, and I am sure there's plenty of things here that other countries see to be just as ridiculous. It really comes down to perspective.
