This is not a negative filtered picture. Whoever says they have this photo in it's unaltered state is lying because this picture was processed through Solarization...one of the many alternative photography processes.


If you knew anything about alternative photography you would know that this wasn't just shot and photoshopped with a "negative filter." Sorry this photo is definately solarized.

I have learned this process myself. And not even a photoshop expert can pull a miracle and remove that...because...there isn't anything to remove...it's what the photo is.


P.S. - I am a photography major. and I also know this photo is solarized because I am familiar with this photographer's work. His images show up in text books ALL the time. He is known for his wonderful/flawless solarization works.


Please don't try to place yourself above others by claiming to have an unfiltered version of the photo because that is a load of bullocks.

i was thinking it was solarized, but i thought it might have done with a computer, because it's so perfectly solarized. anyone who's solarized before knows it's incredibly hard to get something to look like that. anywhoo--awesome picture, awesome subject.

the filter processes of the more advanced programs are actually just a collection of adjustments such as contrast, brightness, pixelation, color replacement...etc done in a certain order to produce a certain predictable effect.

to undo a filter, ANY FILTER, you just need to step backwards in reverse order of the filter's process. to do that, you have to understand some rather advanced elements of photography that very few seem to understand.

understanding the basics of a program is kids stuff, every internet junkie has played with them. Knowing the lingo is not enough

You need to understand the mechanics of an image and the programming that created it.

solarizing grabs a set of tones, usually in the cyan range and changes their neutrality base. after that it transforms the image by desaturating it entirely. this provides the hard edges on the shadow base. after that it negates the image. then it provides a base tone for the image, a process similar to digitally converting a black and white image into a sepia image. digitally this isnt really sepia photography, its just changing the tonal ballance of the black in the color ballance of the image.

i just cant think of any way to respond to such an eloquent accusation as that I dont act as old and mature as i should be as a grad student...lol

I am not talking about digital solarization. I think digital photography is BS. Eventhough it's taking over the industry. There is nothing like getting your hands wet in the chemistry and tanic acids. It's not as fun pushing a couple buttons not to mention it takes much less skill and personal involvement. Digital photography = yawn.

This photographer didn't use digital solarization. He did the full process with the tanic acids, palladium emulsions and lithographic negatives. It's a long process.

I suggest you read The book of alternative photographic processes by Christopher James.

It really is a SWELL read.
