    Bye, Bye, Romney!

    Romney suspends presidential campaign

WASHINGTON - Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign on Thursday, effectively sealing the Republican presidential nomination for John McCain. "I must now stand aside, for our party and our country," Romney told conservatives.

Makes one wonder. I would almost bet McCain would choose Huckabee to satisfy the far right and their mistrust of McCain.

    As for Romney....good riddance.

all this did was open he door wider for the idiot Huckebee to get a step closer to the ticket.

if either Romney and or Huckebee end up being on the Republican ticket with could end up being a potenital continuation of the last seven years of the Bush disaster.

there are just enough idiots around who might end up voting for McCain if either of those two men are on the ballot as a V.P. candidate.

The republicans will certainly now all rally around McCain.

He would be very smart to pick Huckabee as his runningmate to assure the Evangelicals come out in droves. I'm not sure Huckabee would accept though.

Sadly, I don't think Clinton or Obama would have a chance against them.

Unless McCain starts running his mouth about illegal immigration. He's gonna lose a lot of votes unless he learns to keep it zipped.

Trust me -if McCain pulls out the chair for him, Huckabee will sit down so fast his butt will break the sound barrier. Huck would Love the #2 post.

Sadly, I think that's exactly what's going to happen. Romney's got way too many political enemies in his own party. Huckabee would be the spoonful of sugar the evangelicals need to swallow McCain. It would allow McCain to move toward the center to glean independent votes.

Funny thing is, having watched Huckabee for the last 10 years, he probably wouldn't be a bad president. Unfortunately he's so clumsy in his actions that his opposition would pick him apart at every turn, whether it was deserved or not. And Huck's got such a thin skin that he'd react and it'd all go to hell from there.

Romney seems to me to be a much better potential VP than McCain. None of the R. candidates liked Romney very much, apparently; so this might be a great way to position for the #2 spot.

Huckabee's only reason for staying in the race is to be the VP. I also believe that they would lose badly to whomever is the democrat ticket

The democrats could beat a McCain Huckabee ticket. The social conservatives are at odds with the moderate conservatives. A division in the republican ranks makes it easier for the democrats. The most important thing is "Do Americans really want McCain and Huckabee in the White House"?

I will say this for the American people. Mitt Romney has the perfect look for a Republican president and a solid electable background. And yet the people saw right through the bullshit. All polish and very little real substance. So as stupid as we are as a nation, at least we are demonstrating the ability to learn from our mistakes.

    Thanks for playing, Mitt!

In light of the recent leak of the post-election Romney nasties about President Obama buying the election, I think this thread title can finally apply to the former nominee.

He's toast now, and won't be back.

I was sure the Republicans would take over in 2012...in 2010. I figured they just needed a decent candidate to run against Obama's record, and they were set. And there ended up not being one. The pool in 2012 didn't look at all like I thought it would. Romney may have simply been the least worst choice, and that ended up being not enough.

Ouch well that makes it even worse.. either way, he wasted a lot of time trying to be something he just couldn't be.

Lex, I think even with a decent choice republicans would have lost. Republicans went so far down the road of negativity they turned off many voters. And the democratic party has a very effective organization on the ground.

On top of that severe demographic disadvantages puts the entire republican party at serious risk... especially in the future. They basically lost an entire generation of voters because of their own pompous arrogance.

I agree, Lex, on all points.

I myself did not plan to support Obama for a second term a year or so ago. He'd disappointed me with his weakness over the fiscal budget showdown, and I'd never considered myself a real strong supporter, anyway.

Moreover, Romney's performance as governor of Massachusetts led me to believe that he would govern as a moderate, so I'd planned to either vote for Romney in 2012, or just stay home.

But Romney made some unforgiveable missteps. My admiration for him disappeared when he made that "I like being able to fire people" comment, and after that, he stepped in shit right and left--from his disaster in England, to the incident about bullying that gay kid at school, to the dog-on-the-roof incident, the 47% incident, and last but not least, the vigorously anti-woman sentiment voiced in his Party. Picking Paul Ryan as a running-mate didn't help matters.

He brought all of this on himself.

Johann, my best friend followed the identical trajectory as you. Mitt lost him when it became clear that he'd say anything, true or false, to get elected. My friend's comment on Mitt's post-election "explanation" is worth sharing:

Did you happen to see Romney's explanation of why he lost--that blacks, Hispanics and students voted for Obama because of all of O's gifts to them. This explanation establishes two things: that Mitt meant every word of what he said about the 47%; and that he actually does have a set of core beliefs.

    ^Oh, I know!

He just keeps insulting us all even after the election has passed. Don't they ever learn?

Can't they understand that their words just alienate us from the Republican Party even more? At a critical time when demographics has begun working against them, they need to stop insulting us, and reach out to us.

All I can think, Bobo, is that they live in a bubble--an alternate universe that is so far away from the rest of us, that they have lost their sense of perspective.
