One of the last few threads got me thinking.

How scared are you of catching something?

We have people saying how last week they sucked three guys off within three days..and it seems to be pretty common. Guys meeting with other guys who they barley know.

Do I not understand the risk or are people playing games?

Most men don't understand the risk.

People make two huge mistakes. The first is that they assume all STD's are transmissable the same way HIV is (fluid exchange.) This is not true. The other is that they would "know" if they or their partner du jour has a STD. This is also false.

Even practicing "safe" sex, you are still at risk for Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Chlamydia, HPV (warts) and Herpes. It may also be possible to contract Hepatitis or HIV through oral sex.

What is of particular concern is that some of these can be transmitted through skin to skin contact, and most of them can be transmitted orally. The most dangerous part of all though, is that most STD's are asymptomatic in most men, especially in the early stages, so if you do get infected, or hook up with someone that is, you may have no way to know apart from a test.

I am somewhat concerned from time to time. I have more than one sexual partner and do not always use a condom (especially when getting oral sex). So far I have been lucky, but I do understand the dangers.

I don't ever assume that I know a guy enough to be sure that he is clean with respect to STIs. I lived with a boyfriend who was HIV+ and saw him through the crisis that happened when he found out. I also know other guys that are HIV+. I have a fair idea of what the risks are there.

I'm not really scared of catching anything, which is not to say that I don't think it could happen. I protect myself within reason. If I were to catch something, I'd know because I get tested regularly and I'm confident that I could deal with it.

I think we're reaching a point where we're going to need a support group for people who are literally terrified of catching an STI. I have two friends who never have sex. They just see all sex as risky despite any safety precautions they could take. It seems that quite a few men are feeling this way these days.

I was scared, but then I got over it, just like I got over the fear of driving or that I was going to get hit by a bus. I am aware of the risks and have modified my behavior to do things that are very low risk so I can sleep at night. I still get to have my fun. It is kind of the best of both worlds in a way... but a much more sustainable lifestyle.

that is no more scary than the reality that if we eat an all fast food diet we will probably drop dead of a heart attack

it requires no more responsibility than keeping active and having a healthy diet to make sure that you remain cardiovascularly fit

fifty percent of the people that are currently infected with HIV are unaware of their infections by the latest CDC reports out of atlanta... that is because they either believed that the person they were with looked safe, was met in a safe place or that their partner transmitted the virus to them in a wrongly presumed monogamous relationship

they trusted someone or some blood supply that they should not have trusted

it isnt any more complicated than that

just be smart...

use condoms at all times and if you are travelling find out in advance what the quality of the health care system will be like... dont share any needles either.... ANYWHERE

and most importantly

dont let your fear make you live a half life. Safe sex is just as satisfying as barebacking

It seems that guys reach for your dick and expect to be able to suck it, in a sexual situation, without even asking. And they seem to expect the same in return. As if there is no risk involved.

Forgive me, but it's a bit naive to believe that you are immune from contracting diseases just because of good genes or good track record. I'm glad to see you using protection, but just don't let yourself get complacent and stop just because you believe you won't get it.

If your having anal sex then you are at risk in a big way even with a condom cause it can rupture easily.... To be honest, I was beyond terrified in the 80's when Aids was on the news. Only later, armed with knowledge and actual facts did I get over it. Nothing worthwhile in life is risk free.

Though I always have been and will always be the monogamous type, so my risks are lower than someone that likes to just hook up.
But there is always SOME risk. Not really scared, just cautious.

I was paranoid about HIV: Bad thing.
I still don't have much sex, but I certainly am more relaxed about it than before and I don't spend 2-3 hours per day to worry about it, because I mostly kiss and I never go further than oral, and I always get sucked off not the other way around.

Meaning that my risk is pretty much zero. I attend HIV tests every 3 months though.

HPV is always a risk, even in a monogamous relationship. Men can't be tested for it and some strands may cause signs in one, but not the other. So basically if your monogamous boyfriend ever had sex with someone else, he can pass HPV to you without ever having shown a sign or a reason to know he's had it.

If you monogamous boyfriend shows absolutely no signs of infection you have no reason to assume that he is infected especially if it is a long term and functional relationship. I know that I wouldn't care if I had someone like that.
