Sounding can be a lot of fun. If you are serious about this, get a set of uterine dilators (hegar or Pratt). They are smooth stainless steel meant for this purpose.

You need to be clean and if playing deep, you must be sterile. As was mentioned here UTI's or prostate infection are a possible problem if you play deep without sterile toys and lube. If playing in the first few inches of the dick, it is still important to make sure hands, toys and dick are clean and still use a sterile lube. But the risk of a UTI is much reduced.
