    :-(

So sad and SO unexpected. ( I didn't even know she was sick - fucking cancer...)

Yes, most of us love "Love to love you Baby", and "Last Dance", and "I Feel Love" (amongst many others...)

But I'd recommend buying/downloading the album, "The Wanderer"

Actually, get it on CD if you can, the MP3 version sucks. (As do most MP3's, but don't get me started....)

It's a great, underrated album, and perhaps her last *great* one.

Frankly she was about 10 years older than I thought she was, but still WAY too young to die.

Thanks, Donna, for all the great music. I wish I had been old enough to experience the "Club 54" years.

Your talent and your voice will live on for decades to come.

I was thinking about her the day before she died because of the album cover thread. I was going to post some of her covers, but didn't, and she died down her in Florida too. I would have thought she was older than 63 since she was famous in the early to mid 70s.

It wasn't my favorite by her, but it was a great attempt at a "rock" album by her.

I wanted to like her last album "Crayons" a lot more than I did. I think they spent a bit too much time chasing trends and not enough time following her muse.

I'm kind of surprised that Lex is the only one to bring up her AIDS comments. She certainly denied having meant what was reported but it has always complicated my memory of her.
I know Gloria Gaynor went that same route. I recall an interview where she said something along the lines of she "realized" that people were using her music to get in the mood to fornicate and sin, and so she wasn't going to sing those songs anymore. I don't think she ever singled out gays specifically, although that was usually her fanbase. She apparently went back on that sentiment a few years later, once she realized that that's where the money was.

One of the most underrated singers ever. I think it's a great disservice to simply refer to her as the "Queen of Disco". She was so much more. As evidenced by her many Grammy nominations and wins she was a versatile performer able to perform many genres.

Just as she lived most of her life, her funeral services were a private affair attended only by family and close friends.

    May she rest in peace.

To have it leave such bittersweet memories behind is quite another.

A wish of happiness for your great memories, and my condolences for the tears they left behind.

Donna Summer's Letter to ACT UP

By Peter Staley on June 12, 2012 1:28 PM |

When the news hit that Donna Summer had died, I was reminded of her little-known scrape with ACT UP, the AIDS activist group I joined shortly after its first demonstration in 1987. As many will recall,*even though her music was hugely popular with the gay community, she faced an ongoing backlash after the Village Voice attributed some quotes to her from a concert in 1983, saying she slammed gays and claimed AIDS was a punishment from God.

As some in the community continued to embrace her, others grew angrier at her hedged denials (words like "misunderstanding" were used), and the issue continued to percolate (see this transcribed 1985 story from The Advocate).

By 1989, various ACT UP chapters started protesting at Donna Summer appearances, including this Boston Gay Pride event, as reported by Gabriel Rotello in Outweek Magazine (July 3,1989):

To everyone's surprise, Donna Summer wrote a letter to ACT UP New York attempting to mend the divide. A few quotes from the letter were reported at the time, and appeared often in recent online obituaries, but the letter itself has never been seen publicly.

So I asked Jay Blotcher, who was ACT UP's media coordinator at the time, if he still had a copy. He said he had kept it, but it was now with his ACT UP archives which he donated to the New York LGBT Community Center. After a few phone calls and emails, the Center pulled Jay's archives out of storage, and sent me a scan of the two-page letter.

I don't think ACT UP kept up their demonstrations after she sent it, but that probably had more to do with our priorities at the time, rather than this strange letter. Note to PR agents: when you apologize to the gays, it's probably not best to quote at length from the bible (even though it's a lovely quote).

    July 26, 1989

    Dear Members of Act-Up:

I am really sorry that my reply has taken so long, but this is not a matter that I take lightly and because of my schedule, I was forced to wait until I was clear and not under pressure.

First of all, let me say that these accusations are unjust and unfair. At first, I was unknowingly protected by those around me from the bad press and hate letters I was receiving regarding this matter. During that time I was pregnant (twice in 18 months), was engulfed in a major law suit and several of my family members passed away. My manager, at that time, felt my life and emotional health was at stake so there was no response.

Since then, however, I have made numerous replies and spoken openly to try and clear up this misunderstanding. I cannot force you to believe what I tell you, so if you choose to continue on with this fighting and arguing, that's up to you. I did not say God is punishing gays with aids, I did not sit with ill intentions in judgement over your lives. I haven't stopped talking to my friends who are gay, nor have I ever chosen my friends by their sexual preferences.

We have too many good memories together to live in this state of unforgiveness. I never denied you or turned away, but in fact you turned away from me. If I have caused you pain, forgive me. It was never my intention to reject you but to extend myself in love. I know that some of you really need me now because you've written and told me so. Can't we just forgive each other for this past confusion?

My motto in this life is 1st Corinthians 13. "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a face that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails, but where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophecy in part; but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope an love. But the greatest of these is love."

    I love you,

    Donna Summer

Donna Summer - Donna Summer Heading For The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame

Late disco diva Donna Summer has landed a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Due to an administrative error, the I Feel Love singer's induction notice has been released hours before Hall of Fame officials announce the Class of 2013 on Tuesday (11Dec12).

Summer passed away in Florida in May (12) after losing a secret battle with lung cancer. A statement from the late star's family reads: "We are overjoyed the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame has recognized Donna's tremendous musical achievements. Its an honor we know she quietly hoped for and would very much cherish. We are deeply grateful.

"The family cannot fully express the gratitude they feel for the outpouring of love received over the past few months in support of Donna's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. From fellow recording artists and industry executives to friends and fans from around the world, it will not be forgotten."

Ironically, the news of Summer's induction comes as stars like Kelly Rowland and Ciara prepare to honour the singer and another tragic R&B star, Whitney Houston, at the 2012 Vh1 Divas concert on Sunday (16Dec12).
Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea will officially reveal the Class of 2013 on Tuesday.

The full list of nominees are Rush, Deep Purple, Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Procol Harum, Albert King, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, the Meters, Chic, Randy Newman, the Marvelettes, Kraftwerk, Donna Summer, Public Enemy, and N.W.A.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on 18 April (12).

I turned 18 in 1980, just after the huge disco craze. Donna Summer was HUGE! A mega-superstar, kinda like Britney Spears and Mariah Carey put together.

You had to have been there to understand just how huge she really was. And... What A Voice!!

I still have her Bad Girls album on vinyl, bought in 1979, I think. Eat your hearts out!

It saddened me to hear of her death. It felt like a piece of my heart was torn out. RIP, Donna. We forgive you. We know you didn't mean it.

Let's face it, as much fun as that movie was overall it wasn't great.

Having come from a background in musical theater it's a shame she wasn't able to fulfill her promise on the big screen.

I wonder how many of you have heard the Midnight Special version of "Last Dance"?

She sang it absolutely live. If any one thing will reveal your real talents as a singer, a live appearence certainly will.

Just listen to the artistry! She plays her voice like a Stradivarius.

    Re: Donna Summer [merged]

I'm glad there are a lot of us in the gay community who did forgive Donna. As well as her responding with grace and humility rather than forget us or demean us and be bitter and contentious. I'd rather remember her for the music and the soaring voice, and the good memories it gave her fans that will last their lifetimes.

Wasn't crazy about the new remix for FOTT, but slowly growing on me. What a glorious voice until the end.

Donna Summer Remix Album Due In October

The legacy of the late Donna Summer continues to live on, as a new remix album celebrating the diva's career is due out in October.

"Love to Love You Donna" will be released on Oct. 22 through Verve Records, and is produced by Dahlia-Ambach Caplin and Randall Poster. The project features new re-workings of classic Summer tunes from the likes of Giorgio Moroder, Frankie Knuckles, Eric Kupper, Chromeo & Oliver and Hot Chip, among others.

The legendary Moroder, who co-produced most of Summer's albums released between 1975 and 1980, contributes a pulsating remix of "Love to Love You Baby" for the project. Moroder recently premiered the cut live during his DJ set at the Way Out West festival in Gothenberg, Sweden (Aug. 9). Moroder co-wrote the song with Summer, and it became her first hit single on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 2 on the chart in February of 1976.

Knuckles and Kupper reworked "Hot Stuff" for the collection, while Hot Chip took on the classic album cut "Sunset People," from the "Bad Girls" album. The new set's first single is Chromeo & Oliver's remix of "Love Is In Control (Finger On the Trigger)."

Music Review: Donna Summer's Pop Domino: 'Lady of the Night' Turns 40

Love to Love You Baby (Casablanca, 1975) impacted, its ripples had a lasting effect on popular music and the woman who brought it to life. However, Donna Summer's musical odyssey did not begin with the rhythmic erotica present on that long player.

Summer's debut, Lady of the Night (Groovy, 1974), is still obscured in her discography, as music historians often confine the singer to her output from 1975 through 1979. Undoubtedly a pioneer in the disco style, Summer's wider pop experiments are wrongly disregarded; Lady of the Night was a compass for the diversity encapsulated in her career. The album also evinced her stature as the birth mother of the transformative pop model that others followed (Madonna, Kylie Minogue).

Those chameleon tendencies of Summer's were nurtured in gospel and later contemporary rock as a teen ? Summer was a member of the Bostonian based band Crow. Summer debunked to Munich, Germany in 1967 for theatre work where she'd sharpen her singing skills. After appearing in several successful productions, Summer recorded her first single ? a German version of "Aquarius" from the musical Hair. While singing behind Three Dog Night, Summer intersected with two up-and-coming talents, Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte.

I think she is underrated as a singer. "Queen of Disco" aside, there are very few who can match what she did on Bad Girls, and I think she deserves credit as an innovator, too, since nothing before 1977 sounds like "I Feel Love". Gone too soon.

Very underrated indeed! There wasn't anything she couldn't do: pop, rock, disco, r&b, gospel, blue, opera, jazz, musical theater and even country. She's also an accomplished painter.

When she and Giorgio Moroder recorded "I Feel Love" they basically created the blueprint for techno and today's dance music. Still influential to this day.

I'm sure her family will see that history proves it. Her legacy was well established years ago.

    Re: Favorite Donna Summer song?

A lot of great selections. I chose "other" because she has so many others I love in addition to the ones above. "Spring Affair", "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)", "On The Radio", "The Wanderer", "Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)", "State of Independence", "Oh Billy Please", "Dinner With Gershwin", "All Systems Go", "Love's About To Change My Heart", "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt", "Melody of Love (Wanna Be Loved)" and "I Will Go With You (Con te partirò)" are a bunch of other favorites. It's hard to choose just one when Donna was undoubtedly one of the best female singers/vocalists in the world. She never got much praise for her work after disco died out.

I don't like her 80's music, except for the PWL songs.
The best song is I Feel Love.
