did you experience anything else unusual lately?
like more windows crashes than usual? errors when you try to open zip/rar files on your harddrive?
    it sounds either:
your network cable/card has a defect
    your RAM has a defect.

more crashes rar/zip errors would speak for the latter.

EDIT: also whenever i try to download on youtube it only loads about 1/4 of the way and stops and in the status bar it says transfering data...
Hmmm... just because i've dealt with a lot of HDD issues before, i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you may be having HDD problems (You're not out of HDD space per chance are you). It's the source file could not be read message that's sticking out in my mind. I seem to remember getting that message with a HDD failure issue a few years back. Try some other things discussed here first, but you may end up having to copy all your irreplacable data off that drive and reformatting it eventually.

the term download for me means he tried to download something form another machine to his computer. "source file could not be read" means that the file on the other machine has issues. so i excluded his harddrive.
i will stay with - cable, network carc/driver, RAM or even 2nd level cache.

so you now said you have a wireless network so cable shouldn't be the problem? can you try to use a cable ? do you know how to access your routers configuration interface? try using a different wireless channel (that is a number from 1-11 i believe)

Well now i don't quite understand cause the story is changing.

Is it just one computer having the problem? When you say you tried to DL a file from another computer, did the computer you were downloading TO have the problem, or the one you were downloading FROM have the problem? Have you tried bypassing your router altogether and going directly from your cable modem to your problem computer?

Are you only getting problem if you use firefox?

Is the computer in question Always/Only connected via a wireless network? Is the network connection strength ok?

Start over from the beginning and tell us everything that's going on, even if it seems insignificant. Write down your error messages so you can relay them to us word for word.

    To Corny:
Even tho it seems paradoxical, you can get a source file could not be read message from a somewhat rare HDD filing system error that corrupts the "read" data when "writing" it to certain HDD sectors. I agree it's a misleading message. But after hearing he's on a wireless network, i'm not so unsure it isn't a networking problem like you said.

I'll probably sound stupid here but could you go to a completely different site and try downloading something else big and see if the same happens. Sometimes the site you are downloading from has the corrupt file, or so I have found!
