Rosie O'Donnell apologizes for mocking spoken Chinese, but some question her sincerity

By ERIN CARLSON, Associated Press Writer
Thu Dec 14, 8:38 PM ET

NEW YORK - Rosie O'Donnell says she's sorry for mocking spoken Chinese on "The View," but an association that represents journalists from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, including Chinese American, says it wasn't enough.

In a Dec. 5 segment, O'Donnell joked about how Danny DeVito's recent and seemingly drunken appearance on the ABC daytime talk show had become international news.

"You know, you can imagine in China it's like `ching chong, ching chong chong, Danny DeVito, ching chong chong chong, drunk, "The View," ching chong,'" the 44-year-old comedian said.

On Thursday's show, she told the audience: "To say ching chong to someone is very offensive, and some Asian people have told me it's as bad as the n-word. Which I was like, `Really? I didn't know that.'"

Karen Lincoln Michel, president-elect of Unity: Journalists of Color Inc., said O'Donnell's remarks "really didn't sound like an apology to me."

Lincoln Michel said Unity was waiting for Barbara Walters, who created the show, to respond to a letter asking her to publicly acknowledge that O'Donnell's remarks were "patently offensive."

"I think by allowing Rosie O'Donnell's cheap jabs at Chinese Americans to go unchecked, then the network is essentially condoning racial and ethnic slurs," Lincoln Michel told the AP in a phone interview.

Unity said it represents more than 10,000 journalists nationwide.

"You know it was never (my) intent to mock," O'Donnell said on Thursday's show, "and I'm sorry for those people who felt hurt or were teased on the playground."

"But I'm also gonna give you a fair warning that there's a good chance I'll do something like that again, probably in the next week not on purpose. Only 'cause it's how my brain works."

O'Donnell characterized her accent as "Chinese, Asian, pseudo-Japanese, sounded a little Yiddish ..."

Yeah, it was stupid, but I don't think she meant it to be offensive exactly...

And for all the work she's done for gay families.. she gets a get out of jail free card from me.

    Oh, for God's sake....

The woman can't pass gas without causing a controversy.

If her apology seemed less than sincere, it's prolly because she meant
no harm by her remarks in the first place.

It's 'The View', not 'The Politically Correct View'. All of those babbling
cows, (did I say 'babbling cows' ? I'm sorry, I meant 'Fascinating commentators') fight endlessly to get a word in edge wise (Lord knows)

There's bound to be something to offend someone most everyday...

(And don't think for a second that ABC doesn't LUV the publicity)

I agree. I think she was just talking too much, as usual. I doubt she meant anything by it, but she should remember that she's on tv.

Seeing as she goes after people for some of the silliest things so aggressively...I think it puts her foot firmly in her mouth.

I like her, but seriously. It's offensive and there's no way she was so oblivious that she can brush it off the way she has in her 'apology' statements.

I just watched the clip and I can't even believe this is deemed controversial.

The press is so obsessed with Rosie overstepping her bounds on The View,it's gotten ridiculous.

People are actually watching The View and looking for a story.

    Hey!

For goodness sakes, the woman's a stand-up comedian and knew NOT all the jibberish she was saying actually meant something..........I know I did NOT!!

Why does everyone have to be so awful to people when they do things and did NOT mean to do it............I mean, it was NOT like the Richards guy saying the N-Word, for we ALL know that's wrong........but the chinese was clearly a mistake.

Please, don't be so hard on Rosie!

For she is clearly, one of the "Good-Guys" (so-to-speak)!!!

Keep it clean and non-political and just maybe we can get through one of The View's programs without someone yelling foul ball!

Love you Rosie and support you and yours!

rosie is a comedian. comedians do impressions and make jokes to get a laugh. that's all. she didn't mean to offend anyone. she was just telling a story and wanted to make it funny, and that's what she did.

everyone tries to be so god damn politically correct these days it's just unbelievable. you can't say anything without someone saying something about it. yes rosie can be a crazy bitch and half the time i don't like her, but she was just making a joke. just laugh. ha ha. if you don't find it funny, then don't laugh and wait until she says something else you might enjoy. don't start some big controversy just because you were "offended".

rosie doesn't know chinese. to most the language does sound like a bunch of "ching" "chang" chongs" just like im sure english sounds weird to them, so she was just going from what she hears, and what will get a laugh. now if she personally attacked someone from the audience by like "hey you asian bitch, ching chang chong mother fucker" then i would be like whoa.... rosie crossed the line. but she didn't.

everyone just needs to learn that not everything is offensive and it's ok to relax and just laugh.

All I can say is that it offends me to always have my language reduced to a bunch of chinky sounds.

If Rosie had said "You know, in Mexico they're probably saying 'Taco taco taco taco burrito chalupa Danny DeVito, taco taco El View'" maybe that would be deemed more socially inappropriate.

I guess people just don't get it, which isn't anyone's fault per se. It doesn't seem like a big deal externally, but if you grew up with it, it feels bigger. I associate it with everything, putting ones fingers at one's eyelids and making squinty eyes, making those rediculous Bruce Lee noises...

It's always so demeaning to our culture, of which we're very proud. Our language isn't a bunch of onomatopoeia and it never sounds like 'ching chang chong chong chong'. Even hearing that makes my stomach twist. It just two-dimensionalizes us even more.

I don't see it as any better than making a reference to gay men and speaking in a lisp, even if you didn't mean to offend anyone. And we all know she'd be all over that if it ever happened.

I just wish she had shown as much sensitivity to this as she does with LGBT issues instead of brushing it aside.

The issue is, she doesn't think. She just spits things out and then is shocked and awed when people are offended.

She needs to grow up and yes, when she makes a stupid mistake like this, don't use the "Hey, I didn't realize you'd be offended" card. Sincerely apologize, learn about it and make sure it doesn't happen again.

This is no different than Richards N-word tirade... It's a comedian going for a very cheap joke.

    Ignorant.

I wish someone she listens to would say that to her.

Sometimes the only way to understand how something feels for someone else is to translate the circumstance into a situation that would feel that way to us. If, to Chinese people, what she said really is equivalent to the n word, then I agree her insincere apology was insulting -- better to say nothing.

I hate apologies that say, "I'm sorry if you were offended by what I said," implying they believe it's dumb to be offended by what they said.

The thing is, though, that's what's at the heart of PC speech. And expecting comedians to be PC takes away some of their best material, and their ability to be free-thinking enough to be funny. So it's a fine line they're walking and if we value good entertainment we need to be aware of that.

Puhleeze...I really don't think that Rosie would purposely offend anyone...even gay bashers....now she will defend gays etc. but to say she was making fun...who thought that that was an offensive term for them...am I missing something? You have to know her humor and her quick wit to know that that truly came off the coff and she said it...People need to quit being so sensitive...like the caveman commercial...haha!

Listen...I normally like Rosie and have no issue with her...but the day she called Kelly Ripa a homophobe is the day she lost me...there are plenty of gay battles to pick and she lost me big time there...stupid

but then I was thinking maybe she is just overly sensitive to these kinds of things and then she goes and says "ching chong ching chong"...sorry...she is freaking nuts

and then she supposedly doesn't understand why this would be offensive?

her behavior doesn't make sense...she is sounding very hypocritical

The irony is not lost on me about how easily she can make a comment, however benign, that offends many people of Asian decent and wave it off, yet when another "performer" makes an equally benign comment that offends her, she goes on a tirade that vastly overshadows Unity's response to her comment.

First it was the Kelly-Ripa-made-a-homophobic-remark controversy and now it's the Asian controversy ... what next? This is ROSIE, this is who she is and we should all accept that. She is not malice-intended, though she is misguided, and I doubt she would be as popular as she is without her mouth. Some people just need to take her with a grain of salt and move on.

I mean, when Madonna took the Puerto Rican flag and swiped it through her legs during a concert in San Juan many years back, I did not take offense to it and viewed it as an artistic gesture - but of course many outcried it. I agree that it was not appropriate given the audience - but I only prayed she learned her lesson. Did not make me like her any less. Obviously it did not hurt her career.

People need to remember that these instances are far less severe than the ex-Kramer's N-word use which when repeated unnecessarily escalated the issue into unacceptable behavior.

My opinion - we all make faulty judgments and act irrationally once and people should not shun us for being human. Mature education is what is needed, not angry backlash (I am just a peacemaker at heart).

I think Rosie pissed in the shoes of the ultra-extreme Bush Republicans and they are looking for any opportunity to stick it to her. It's a pity that those who show glee at her shortcomings aren't offended by the 3,000 dead Americans and the 500,000 dead Iraqis, dead because coward George WTC Bush told lies so he could invade Iraq. Funny, the Rosie Haters never want to post about that! I just wished they loved America the way they love their freak of nature president.

Re: Rosie O'Donnell blasted for mocking spoken Chinese

Rosie isn't an accomplish linguist (no pun intended). When she had her own talk show she was trying to learn Spanish and recently mentioned on The View that she's given up on it.
Comedians in the delivery of their jokes frequently use an Irish brogue, French, Russian, Spanish accent etc. depending on the appropriateness.
We know mean spirited intent when we hear it, I watched the original show and you could see clearly that it wasn't racially inspired. She was merely saying what a ridiculous spectacle had been made about Danny DeVitos' appearance on the show worldwide. She selected any language at random and spouted off gibberish and included the words "Danny DeVito" and "The View" to illustrate a point. She didn't make a single comment, positive or negative, about the Chinese people, culture or language.
There are far more serious problems in this world and their importance is diminished by people making an issue over the harmless antics of one comedian.

Even in the very trivial scene of celebrity scandals, there must be a more important issue. At most Rosie deserved a groan from the audience because it was a lame, childish joke.

Please, people use greater insults (verbal and physical) everyday to ethnic minorities and homosexual/bisexual communities. One famous person says something nowhere near as offensive as violence and picket signs saying stuff like "gay people are influenced by the devils" (true story, came by some religious fanatic downtown with that sign) or something, and she gets blasted. What's that about?

To reiterate what The Pianist and wintermoon said, this is simply a case of Rosie being Rosie and not thinking beforehand about what she's saying...

If you'll notice in the clip, the audience laughs and applauds when she she does that, so I'm guessing perhaps the studio audience is somewhat less conservative than the viewing audience...? If she has to start thinking about whether whatever she says is going to offend someone, then she will cease to be the spontaneous Rosie O'Donnell everyone knows. Barbara Walters probably likes having her on the show to add a bit of fire to the conversations, but if there's a controversy to deal with every other week, she may begin to reconsider her decision in hiring Rosie...

I'm not saying she meant to be racist. But she is being insensitive and she doesn't seem to care at all that what she said offended people. That's what's upsetting. Does it mean a lot? No. Am I going to cry myself to sleep over it? No. But my respect for her went down. She's fine with screaming at Kelly Ripa for telling Clay Aiken not to touch her with his possibly germ-filled hand and demands an apology for it being 'homophobic' but when people say that the stereotypes she used offhandedly that demean the Chinese language were offensive to them, she blows them off.

And blackbelt, I meant proud as in the pride that all people feel in themselves and where they come from. So knock the attitude.

It's not a huge deal, but it's one that keeps hitting home, like getting poked in the same spot your entire life.

She is arrogant, craze, rather egocentric and displays a lot of immaturity and insensitivity towards others - and then tries to hide all this under the euphemism of it all being humorous and or comedic. She takes "cheap shots" when she can and i am not so sure she understands THE ART of being a comedian.

this is just the views of the local village idiot, but then again i have never found her or Margaret Cho as humorous in anyway; put Jimmy Kimmill in the same bag..

What if Rosie O' Donnell hadn't said it? Lets say someone like Bill O' Reilly said it. What would you be saying now? I doubt most of you would be on the defense saying, "I'm sick of politically correct speech!" You'd probably be saying, "Is there nothing those right wing nuts won't say!? Racists! He should be kicked off the air!"

^ Why, leave it to you, jb18, to defend the America-hating vitriol of a draft-dodging, gay bashing America-hater like Wilma O'Reilly. That you would do so with a straw man argument isn't all that surprising, either. Must be his politics that you admire.

Bill O'Riley already has a mountain of evil things he says intentionally to hurt people.

Rosie stuck her foot in her mouth once.

    Big difference.

Re: Rosie O'Donnell blasted for mocking spoken Chinese

There are vast differences between Rosie & Bill O.
She is a comic and goes for a punch line, which amuses some and can offend others.
O'Reilly has an agenda. His diatribes are carefully scripted. He builds on a nugget of truth to try to convince mass audiences that his policies and opinions are infallible.
He launched a hate driven campaign & boycott against Canada, France & Germany for not blindly following Bush into Iraq. He never mentioned they sent troops to support us in Afganistan (their troops are still there supporting us). They mistrusted the intell on Iraq. Guess what musketeers they were right, but no O'Reilly apologies.
He likes to stir the gullible rabble into a frenzy and unfortunately it fequently works.
He's also has sexual harrassment charges, Rosie never has.
Rosies' comments are pretty much an expression of her humor and can be tasteless at times. Bill waves the American flag and tries to convince the public that he is the sole defender of the American way.

The worst part is it's such an old and classic joke. You take any foreign language, speak jibberish that sounds like words that are common in their language (french, use la, mexican use el, german use das, and so on), example - la fraun pe la hout por la TV, Rosie O'Donnell, a la stupide la View. It's not mocking, it's common humor. I've had foreign friends joke about American speech by using a surfer voice.

Oldest joke I know, first one I ever remembered. How do chinese people name their kids? They throw a drawer of forks and spoons on the floor. Ching Chung Wong Ting.

I think her apology video is better seen than read, btw.

This Just in Rosie O'Donnell Farts, Gay people are gay and Madonna does something!

    In the news this year!:

Apparently Rosie farted on The View, didn't say excuse me and blamed it on the dog. Elisabeth Hasselbeck fans are outraged!

There was a pride parade today were millions came together both, gay, lesbian, straight and bisexual. World's economy collapses some closeted homosexuals who refuse to be named, predict that more parades will burn out your retna and cause profuse bleeding from the eyes and rectum!

Madonna bought an ice cream for her soon to be adopted son David, Chocolate lovers everywhere think Madonna's a bitch because she gave him Vanilla.

Alleged Gay Diva cites the bible says homosexuality is a sin! Millions of gay American Idol fans flock to the defense of such a statement, saying "Well the bible DOES say it." (even though it doesn't)

Britney Takes her kid to the Zoo, cunt!

A few uniformed "alleged" Bisexuals so concerned with the plight of gay men call for a ban on Pride and tell them to keep it in the bathroom! Other bisexual blasted for defending gay pride!

People support Bush's plan to stall on Iraq Military overhaul and new approach. Millions support the procrastination!

Gay's still can't married in 30+ states. A gay man who was made gay by jerking off for gay men on a webcam supports that sentiment and says non-traditional families are no good!

    People get offended!

Millions or Parody threads and passive-agressive threads appear on a Website known as JUB, servers collapse on self and skies fall!

Re: Rosie O'Donnell blasted for mocking spoken Chinese

"less severe than the ex-Kramer's N-word"

No not really. It's pretty typical for people to underplay anti-asian garbage. It's extremely rude and not really needed.

If you don't get why it's so offensive, it's because people TEACH THEIR CHILDREN to mock asian kids with "ching chong" and eye-lid pulling. It's something they grow up with, and as a child it offends them and makes them feel alienated. Then, when they grow up, they still hear it but they also hear other things like "stupid chink" or "dumb jap" to go along with it.

No big deal, racism can be survived, but generally acting like a total cunt isn't a good idea and being a stupid dick for a few cheap laughs from an audience of retards is not good either.

No, no one should hate Rosie for it. She didn't mean to be rude. But a bunch of you are seriously stupid if you think degrading someone's language and culture as hateful, indoctrinated bullying is different from taking part in low-class France v. America argumentation, which is also extremely offensive. If you read the psychological studies on anti-Asian racism the main theme if it is to start degrading them from childhood, disregard their culture and identity, and make constant attempts to abrade their sense of being as well as dismiss their feelings as inconsequential. Is it any mystery to you why so many insecure gay asian american boys come here wondering if they'll be accepted at all?

Non-asians take a lot of liberties with asian americans. When they work hard, achieve high marks, and do well on the job it's said it's because of culture, rote memory, and beatings from parents. Of course, all three are exaggerated and made into mainstream jokes. At best it's fetishized.

When asian men are portrayed as sexless, dickless, ugly nerds it's not racism. When asians are only overrepresented in media as criminals (usually incompetent), despite having the lowest crime rates in the world, it's fine. When in action movies, hundreds upon hundreds of Hispanic and Asian men are slaughtered (as the "enemy") by the white or sometimes black main character, it doesn't really register. When the asian girl is "rescued" by a white man from "perverted misogynistic non-white uglie" it's not racist either. But if you put a picture of a black man breaking into a house, you get gutted by every single anti-racism organization on the face of the earth.

When 4/5 blacks and hispanics replace better qualified asian students because of affirmative action, it's fine. Hey black guy, look how friendly I am, I'm giving you these spots that weren't going to be given to a white anyway. I have black friends. Now, I'm going to home to a conservative forum to whine about affirmative action! I dated a black girl once.

I'm not saying this for any other reason that it offends me as a gay person with a brain to see so many gay men this culturally and racially ignorant. It's very hypocritical.

The reason why the word nigger is so offensive is because it was used as a pejorative to degrade blacks, and as a term a majority used to bear down upon innocent people and persecute, humiliate, and deprive them.

Saying "ching-chong" is a mockery of one culture; that isn't exactly the problem. Japanese and Korean kids, as well as Indians and Southeast Asians hear it all the time. It shows that you are the "other" and that in your eyes Asians are grouped together like pigs or dogs. The differences between India, Japan, Laos, and Vietnam are blurred into a martial arts, nerdy cariacture. It's one prong of the process in which a racial minority is made to feel sub-human. The ability to for them to be recognized as person in the community is compromised; proper recognition for good work is marginalized, intelligence statistics are suppressed in the name of a "fair multiculturalism", low crime rates are masked by a biased media, their sexuality is humiliated with overblown interpretations of penis size differences, and 4000 years of Indian, Japanese, and Chinese culture is dismissed in a joke.

Some of you have noticed that Asians tend to be resentful and dislike you, now you know why. Because apparently, you're ignorant dicks.

You know.. this reminds me of a funny story.

Back when I was doing freelance video editing before I landed the best job on the face of the fucking earth, I was doing a video for one of the Asian guy porn sites.

they started the video with an interview where they were telling all sorts of Racist Chinese jokes, except it was all Chinese Americans who were telling the jokes.

one said "what's your name?" and the other one said "Mark".

The first said "I've never heard a fork make that sound when it hit the wall".

They all burst out laughing, and then continued oon for about 5 minutes telling this jokes, all barely able to keep going from laughing so hard.

I was shocked and didn't know if I was supposed to include it or not.

I didn't, although it was pretty funny.
    Gentlemen.... Thank you.

when people constantly joke about things that they're uncomfortable with it's generally a sign of issues

like straight men teasing eachother about being gay.

    ===

    here's a test for everyone:

    which is the most offensive?

    a) running up behind a Jew and pinning a yellow star of david onto their backs
    b) hopping around a Sikh woman, pulling your shirt over your head and making arabic sounding noises
    c) asking some guy from the South how his Cousin Mom is doing, and if his sister has given birth to his baby yet
    d) setting a Peurto Rican flag on fire
    e) making a portrait of Jesus out of dog diarrhea

all could be considered pretty funny I guess.

I find Rosie's fart very offensive and I think she should apologize to all of us for it and go to FST. (Fart Sensitivity Training)

Now, who is this... "Madonna" you speak of? Did she have child by immaculate conception?

    Inquiring minds want to know....
