Laptops don't fly
I learned this yesterday, as I was going down the stairs, and my ankle rolled. I caught the banister, my laptop decided to go Wright brothers on me and attempt flight. It failed. It literally flew down an entire flight of stairs, shattered the screen, ripped the plastic amazingly. I have insurance on it, but I don't know yet how much they are going to cover. They will replace it with a similar model, or I will be able to take a cash settlement on it for the same amount they could replace mine for.
I know I will be getting another ThinkPad, I won't have anything else, it just comes down to the question. I had a T41, they will probably replace with a T60 with similar specs. But I also could take the cash settlement and throw in some of my own money and do a upgrade. So the questions becomes, if I do the upgraded model, do I do a Z61m Advanced, or a T60p? I think I'm leaning towards the T60p, but does anyone have any personal experience with the Z61? I've never used one.

Too funny (well...you know what I mean...not really funny haha)...anyway, the same thing happened to my best friend a few years ago. His wasn't very successful either in attaining flight. Thankfully, his was insured as well.

Get a harddrive enclosure, and you can still have you old files, if you get a new machine..

Old hard drive is crispy. I have have a USB to IDE cable for the computer work I do for other people, and it locks up on power up. Luckily, I did a full back up last week, so I've only lost a few bookmarks, entries in Outlook that I still remember, and other small things.

The only time my laptop will fly when it stops working, then it's out the window it goes.

T60p
My little sister works for Lenovo and she swears by them (quite a lot).
She's the top sales person for that market here in Ireland and she's evangelistic about the T60 range.
Noel.

Thanks Noel, that's exactly what I needed to hear.
I think I've decided on the config I'm going to go for, just have to wait for the money. With the sale Lenovo has going on right now, I'm getting about $450 off. It's too good to pass up.

T60p
14.1 inch 1400x1050 res
ATi Mobility Fire GL V5250 graphics (256 mb)
2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo
XP Professional
The only things that are variable right now are:
either 1 or 1.5 GB memory
DVD Burner or just standard CDRW
and the hard drive, either 80 GB 5400 RPM or 100 GB 7200 RPM
I'll decide on those depending on how much I get from insurance.
With any luck, I'll find out how much they will cover in the next day or two.

Re: Laptops don't fly
Hmmm...I used to tease my husband because he ALWAYS packs his laptop in its padded carrying case when he is not using it. Even if he is only carrying it from the bedroom to the livingroom. From all the stories of flying laptops above, sounds like I owe him an apology.

Re: Laptops don't fly
Just a quick update, State Farm took care of me real well, and I have placed an order with Lenovo for a new ThinkPad T60p.
The specs are:
14.1 inch 1400x1050 screen
ATi Mobility Fire GL V5250 w/ 256 MB graphics memory
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz
1.5 GB DDR2 RAM
100 GB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive
8x DL DVD burner
A/B/G WiFi wireless
Windows XP Pro
Integrated finger print reader
Its estimated ship date is the 20th, and with the 2 day shipping, I should have it the Friday before Christmas.
