    Beckham: This is ridiculous.

Right, Beckham's now gonna be contracted to LA Galaxy for £128 million, reportedly.

    52 weeks in a year, 5 years, so that's 260 weeks. Right?

    128/260 = 0.49

So, he's on nearly half a million pounds per week...

Isn't that something like four times the wages of vastly superior footballs, eg Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho? I though those two were certainly under 200k a week.

    Footballing wages are ludicrous.

What's the odds when he retires he comes back to England and takes over a premiership club? One of the few footballers who could afford it.

The most expensive show pony in the world.

They've brought him to raise their profile and boost their shirt sales.

but NOBODY on earth should be paid that much. I also cant see him playing till he's 36 either.

Well the move to LA gets them close to Tom & Katie and Hollywood, and will also give the Beckham brand a massive push in the states.

I agree that he probably won't still be playing at 36, but then with them poised to become even bigger players in the Hollywood glitterati, who needs a football career?

Clearly LA Galaxy have more money than sense.

Indeed. In fact, because the contract doesn't start until his Madrid one runs out, it'll run till he's 37.

Nice little earner for him........mind they'll need to money the to keep posh in the manner she's accustomed to. After all she's talentless so she's never going to have another hit single, ever! Unless she teams up with the other Spice Girls, god I hope that never happens. The Take That reunion is bad enough, lol.

He's also not the best player in the UK, cute but apart from his crossing and free kicks what else does he have? And with all the starving people living in poverty around the world, a million dollars a week is obscene.

    Re: Beckham: This is ridiculous.

LOL most prfessional athletes in America bet paid the big bucks and he should be know less esspecially with the publicity he will be giving the MLS. Lets face it soccer is not a huge sport in a AMerica on a proffesional level I would think that people would be cheering them on as they are trying to bring soccer to the fore front in America so that the country can become a competitive nation in the realm of soccer.

Also the whole story anout all the starving people in the world is ludacrious. Yes there are lots of people who need help but oyu don't really exepect LA Galaxy to give that much money to Charity nor should you yes they giving money to charity would be good but poor children in the world should not stop them from trying to further there own objective if they can afford it.

The Bottom line is stop focusing on the moeny that they are giving him because that is normal in American scales and focus on what he could do for MLS as a whole.

i saw a special on VH1 about the beckhams. They said Posh makes a couple of million a year herself from modeling and various other endorsements. I agree with gaz, they hired beckham to raise not only the galaxy profile, but the profile of mls. while he might not be the best player, he is easily the most recognizeable, especially in the US.

I agree though people may think Posh is talentless because you don't neccesarily see her all the time she is a Model and makes quite a bit of money in that departmen and She is also a Mom which my I must say is in a job catagory all its own.

His salary for playing soccer/football for MLS will only be $50 million. The other $200 million will be potential earnings as it relates to merchandising, endorsements, etc.

Remember that Michael Jordan made a decent wage but the bulk of his money came from endorsements, appearances, etc. That's the lure for pro athletes these days - not the love of the game, but how much money they can extort from anyone who is willing to shake a fistful of cash at them.

It's outrageous, but that's the world we live in, and that's the World Game! It's got to be worth it to the MLS - just the kind of interest and attention he draws.

this was on NPR this evening. they didn't mention the 250 million was with endorsements...wonder if they just left that out.

they also said the stadium where the galaxies play sold 1000 season tickets this morning after the news was announced.

You mean the nelly, gay kids? Broaden your horizons a little. Soccer's one of the most popular and exciting games in the world.

As for Beckham, welcome to capitalism and what the market will pay.

$250 million US for the length of the 5 year contract, that is $50 million a year, not including endorsements. Endorsements are one of the things that has compelled him to move to the US. In Europe he is a "has been" along with his "posh" wife, in the US they have a chance of making more money because they are "fresher meat"
You Americans that were so happy about your minimum wage increase less than two weeks ago must be tickled pink, AND YOU CANADIANS THAT HAVE FLOODED THE TORONTO BOX OFFICE WITH CALLS FOR TICKETS TO GAMES IN TORONTO BECAUSE BECKHAM WILL BE PLAYING IN CANADA SHOULD HANG YOUR HEAD IN SHAME FOR SUPPORTING THIS NONSENSE.

The money isn't too bad. He makes so much from endorsements that he really doesn't even need to get paid.

He is like Tiger Woods. He made about $90 Million dollars last year -- only $7 million of that came from tour winnings. The rest came from endorsements!

You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies). We are hoping to get together at least a US Rugby sevens side by 2005. You should stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the 'World Series' for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.15% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. Instead of baseball, you will be allowed to play a girls' game called rounders which is baseball without fancy team strip, oversized gloves, collector cards or hotdogs.
Apart from that, I hate the game, and its mostly idiot fans. To me, what you call soccer, is what baseball is to Charlie Brown.

If kids who play soccer get/got "beat up" in USA highschools, no surprise the USA is not the most popular sporting country in the world.

Its the biggest sport in the world. We dont care if Americans like it or not!

(And some of the players in England would actually BE the ones doing the beating up in your schools. Google Roy Keane as an example!)

Good on him I say. He's been badly treated by Real and the English FA over the last 7 months or so.

So he's not the brightest or most articulate guy in the world... he's the one getting 50M a year...

And let's face it, he's not going to land any commentating, coaching or presenting jobs when his career comes to an end. He's gotta secure his future, that of his kids (I'm sure he'll have more now) and his wifey. I mean, she's gotta keep up with the Cruise's now hasn't she? They'll probably go Scientology or Kaballah if it means rubbing shoulders with Hollywood's elite.

I think the only sad part is that their already obscene lifestyle will become even more so now. Spending for the sake of spending. If Tom's got one, Posh will have to have one too etc etc etc

Yes, Yes, I know.. the rest of the world loves soccer.

    I don't care.

    they don't in America.

Yes, soccer is the game of champions in the rest of the world, but in America it's the game of wussies.

For my whole life I've been told that "Soccer will be HUGE in a generation because the youth of today plays soccer."

    Great.

They told me that when me and my brothers played soccer when I was 7. that was 31 years ago, and just about as many people care today. Very few.

    Not enough.

Certainly not enough to fill a staduim and no amount of indignant Europeans will change the fact that America already has enough sports that nobody plays anywhere else (How many championship basketball games are there in France?).

Sorry, but God Himself could come down and still no one in the US would be interested in soccer. Americans are more interested in real sports, like real football.

They could pay Beckham a billion dollars...it doesn't matter. Nobody cares about soccer in the U.S. It is boring. Hey, the real football playoffs are on this week..

I'm hoping you don't actually think that, and that you're just making an ironic statement meant to ridicule the machismo of American jocks.

It's a big joke. He's soo OVER THE HILL when it comes to soccer. There's a reason he's already retired from World Cup competion and that's because even he know's he can't compete anymore on that stage of soccer. He's nothing anymore except for a name. Unfortunally it will take 30-50 years for soccer to ever catch on that well here in the US. If Pele couln't do it there's no way that Becks will.

LOL, at least Vicky can try her acting career now. She's been nowhere lately, her singing career after the Spice Girls was a disaster...

Becks is a moneymaker. I never thought he'd sign the Galaxy. I thought he'd choose to stay in Europe for less money. I guess he doesn't find pleasure in playing anymore, it's just his job. Cuz for the pleasure of the game u go Europe.

Well, Basketball is quite popular here too, here in BG we have quite a lot of Americans playing for our teams.

Like this guy: Donta Smith (cute cute guy imo) LOL, playing for Lukoil Academik

And Lamont Jones playing for the same team:

LIVERPOOL FC - You'll Never Walk Alone!
