Republican Says She Wants to Slap Opponent in Wheelchair

Must be more of the Republican "values" we hear so much about. Why are they so fucking cruel? I can't imagine normal Americans approve of slapping a man confined to a wheelchair, but these Republicans think it's acceptable behavior -- after all, they do a lot of this sort of thing...

    By TOM MORTON
    Star-Tribune staff writer

The Libertarian challenger for Wyoming's lone U.S. House seat says Rep. Barbara Cubin offended him by uttering a slur related to his physical disability.

Thomas Rankin said Cubin [Republican candidate] approached him after a campaign debate on Sunday and said, "If you weren't sitting in that chair, I'd slap you across the face."

The Cubin campaign did not deny the remark, but a spokesman for the six-term congresswoman said Rankin started the exchange.

"He misrepresented her and insulted her integrity during the debate," Cubin spokesman Eric Cullen said, reading from a prepared statement.

"When she approached him after the debate about it, he said something not very complimentary. She responded. It was a private conversation. She's over it."

Rankin, however, said he said nothing to Cubin before her remark, and he doesn't consider the issued closed.

"There's no way to undo what she has done," he said. "That shows her insensitivity to people with disabilities."

    Cullen had no further comment.

Democrat challenger Gary Trauner's spokeswoman, Linda Stoval, declined to comment about the incident.

The incident occurred after the hour-long debate sponsored by Wyoming Public Television, Wyoming Public Radio and KTWO-TV.

Rankin, who lives in Casper, had criticized the six-term incumbent for taking $22,520 from a political action committee of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, who is under indictment in Texas for conspiring to violate campaign contribution laws.

After the cameras and lights were shut off, Cubin walked on the stage behind Trauner and then to Rankin, who was still sitting at the table, Rankin said.

Rankin, who is disabled with multiple sclerosis and uses an electric wheelchair, had not moved yet.

While his aide Jeremy Moniz was helping him, Moniz heard Cubin's comment, too.

"She came right up and said it," Moniz said.

Rankin didn't say anything to Cubin before she confronted him, he said.

"It took me totally off guard," he said. "I said, 'Barbara, if you feel the need to slap me, go right ahead.'"

Cubin then turned around and walked away.

Rankin called her comment an inappropriate slur to the disabled. Cubin had not contacted him to apologize, Rankin said.

My my my. I must say, the Republicans sure have a strange outlook on life. Normal Americans want to fight for cures; the GOP wants to fight victims. They attacked Michael J Fox, who has Parkinsons, they attacked triple-amputee former Senator Max Cleland, too. Even Presidemt Bush got in on the act, trying to humiliate a visually impaired man at a press conference who was wearing protective sunglasses!

In a normal time and in a normal country, this sort of behavior would not be accepted.

So, as you see, you can't legislate away hate or stupidity or anything else that's inherent to some humans, just like you can't legislate people from being gay or not believing in god or the like.

thanks for the civics lesson ico7...i was kidding.

i think sebbles, the point of this thread is that republicans are bullies that pick on the poor, disabled, immigrants, etc...and this bitch is a perfect example of a republican that likes to pick on somebody weaker than her. as for bush and even blair, you have no idea what you're talking about. none. even conservatives here think he's a dumb-ass. but since his approval rating is hovering around 30%, i'm sure he could use your support, even from england. send him some money and some milk and cookies...and maybe one of your teddy bears to comfort him.

i do have an idea, he got voted in for his excellent views, and you just choose to overlook them as your fooled by what the not so clever people think, so what im saying is your jumping on the band wagon and being a sheep. she isnt picking on her because her disablity, once again yur blonded by your silly views, which leads me to my point of why your blind to this,

in that article it says he insulted her integrity, so she replied, so obviously you only think the democrats should insult other people and not expect to get anything back.

It was the Republican candidate that claimed the Libertarian candidate started it! That's a logical fallacy (tu quoque).

If her integrity was damaged it was because the truth was revealed regarding her connection with DeLay---that's her own fault. Apparently she wished to keep the public ignorant of her political faults.

Here on the first post by the Gen you will see one of Americas finest conservatives and how he represents the rest of them. I feel you have probably seen something by Michael J. Fox. Let's see you agree with Rush.

Well i dont understand al that as you use words most people arnt taught for example, tu quoque and fallacy.

I mean this posts makes it out like the republicans are against types of people but i dont see them actaully doing this, all i see is a biased democratic view.

Hm, fallacy is "a misconception resulting from incorrect reasoning" and tu quoque refers to "he started it" or believing that two wrongs make a right.

As for the other point, obviously what is going to be pointed out here is the bad things politicians say, especially if it is said by one in a party you hate, so that you can hastily generalize (logical fallacy) the whole party through guilt by association (logical fallacy too).

www.google.com allows you to look up all kinds of information, including definitions just by typing "definition" and the word that confuses you. Or you can try m-w.com or whichever dictionary that meets your fancy.

Sad that you don't get that post since it actually was on your side, but I've no interest in translating English to English right now.

If the man hopes to be a politician, he better develop a little tougher skin than that. Sounds like she treated him as an equal and not by his disability. Should he be allowed to say or do anything just because he is in a wheelchair? Get a grip.

^I believe I'm right about this as I read in the first post:

"He misrepresented her and insulted her integrity during the debate..."

    when he

"had criticized the six-term incumbent for taking $22,520 from a political action committee of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, who is under indictment in Texas for conspiring to violate campaign contribution laws."

Now here in Texas thems grounds for a face slappin. Not!
DeLay really gets around don't he.

Wow, I can't think of many politicians who, after losing a debate, say they want to slap someone in the face. Maybe that was common in, say, Mussolini's Italy or Hitler's Germany, but not in the United States.

Among the violent right wing extremists' code of misconduct, I suppose shooting the man in the face, a la Cheney, would be acceptable; fortunately, in civil society, it isn't, nor is acting like a lunatic acceptable. By losing her cool, she showed a clear need to be restrained and treated for psychological issues -- perhaps a short stay in a sanatorium would help her, maybe the one Zell Miller's confined in -- bolted, as he is, to the floor, 23 hours a day, every day. Ms. Cubin should apologize and withdraw.

I remember the book "Jordan Rules" - about how there were 2 sets of rules for the Chicago Bulls - 1 for Mike - 1 for the rest of the team

    We have "Alfie Rules"

The only difference is that MJ was a star
