Another Democrat interested in Ethics Only for Republicans

Strange how Harry's windfall land deal, currently being reviewed by the ethics committee, hasn't shown up in the deep concerns about corruption expressed by Democratic lumenaries and various contributors to this forum...

It is not strange. The dirt always falls on those in power because thats the only way to sway electorate opinion. Kind of a soap opera like political maneuvering.

The Dems will take over many seats in November, if not the majority, and that means the political machine will start to eat them up if they have done anything wrong or anything that can be made to look wrong.

Look for more and more "dirt" once they get into power. The Dems did it for eight years of Reagan and the GOP pushed it for eight years under Clinton. You see the mudslinging now for Mr. Bush. I hope the diehard, cuz they said the word Gay, supporter of Dems doesn't think it will be stopped in 2008 when the Nation takes a chance on the next Democrat.

ANyways I got off topic. The lack of dirt reporting from the mainstream media on their party of Dems is absolutely no chance occurence.

Re: Another Democrat interested in Ethics Only for Republicans

Yeah, I heard this story on NPR this week.

Help me out here. I'm still trying to find a "victim" or any wrong doing outside of not filing some form with the ethics committee.

Here in Texas, at least, some business deals are still done on a handshake. It appears to me from reading the CNN's account of events, that nothing was reported to the House Ethics Committee back in 2001 because technically no real money changed hands, but rather a transfer of assets on paper.

He paid $400,000 dollars for a parcel of desert outside of Las Vegas, then 8 years later he get $1.1 million in return for his investment? Does anyone have any idea how much land values have gone up in Las Vegas in the past eight years?

Honestly, compared to ethic problems that leaders (plural not singular) of the Republican Party have, this is nothing more than a tempest in a teapot.

    Respectfully.

Never regret anything, because in that moment it's exactly what you wanted.

After reading the 3 cited posts, I agree that it seems to be merely a failure to dot all the eyes and cross all the tees. It is proper however that it should be brought to public scrutiny given the current climate of shady dealings by Congressmen. What's good for the goose ........ etc.

Mazda you say dems don't get prosecuted yet as I read your list of democratic sinners I see many prosecutions. I presume if one pleads guilty one was prosecuted. While not all the dems were prosecuted I think the same can be said of republicans.

I agree with you when you say no politician can be trusted. Once in power men do unusal things or as Abe Lincoln put it "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."

Re: Another Democrat interested in Ethics Only for Republicans

I couldn't agree more. While following the insane rants of General Alpo I may sound republican but it is really just to spin up the old man from NYC. Him and any other idiot who just wishes to spout the partyline sound bites and ignore the shortcomings of all the political players.

I try to decide on the candidate who SAYS he or she will do what I think is best for the country or the state or the city. I usually get burned on that one too since politicians are bought and sold. For instance, I believed Bill when he said he would push for equal rights in the last govt institution that supports discrimination, the military. I threw a vote his way and he threw a dick my way. Not exactly what I was lookin for. He only met the bare minimum in his eyes yet it meant a loss of respect and a change of nothing in our military for GBLT lifestyles.

My whole take on that last post was that A LOT of dems seem to have slipped away. I didn't say all Republicans got prosecuted. We seriously need a seperate institution in this country that would have the huge mission of bringing ethics and integrity to all publicly elected offices. Maybe if both sides had a huge impartial stick over their heads they would start performing as public servants and not self promoters.
Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.

Mazda I think we're mostly in agreement at least as to the nature of the problem with politicians and Washington. I'm not as confident as you that were there a seperate institution to bring ethics and integrity to publicly elected officals that the problem would be solved as we're still dealing with men and power.

A solution more suited to our democratic system is to throw the bums out. It is a complete mystery to me why voters love to vote for incumbants. In a democracy voters really don't have the option of saying its those stinkin politicians if we keep returning them to office. I'd bet if you asked americans "don't you think politicians who spend too much time in Washington loose touch and hence there should be regularily replaced" most would agree, but thats not how they vote.

Somebody please tell me why. There is something psychologically wrong with a population that constantly complains about its leaders yet refuses to replace them when given the opportunity. In the end no matter how bad those in Washington behave if we continue to return them to office they are an accurate reflection of the country as a whole.

I guess we're back to that famous Pogo comic strip "We have met the enemy and it is us."

I think a lot of people vote with a "go with the devil you know" attitude. Or, they vote with one or two issues in mind - he's voted to my liking so far on issue A and B, so I'll stick with him.

What a superb idea. A totally independent commission might be able to do the job.

I wonder what the lists of conservative scandals that the liberal blogs have and the democrat list that the conservative blogs have would look like if infidelity and marital issues were pulled out. I don't care one bit about cheating spouses. I bet the lists would have special interest's fingerprints all over it.

The problem with people who cut and pasts these lists is that they really have no idea if what they are cutting and pasting is true or misleading. For example:

George Crockett, Jr. - Democrat - U.S. Representative from Michigan. Served four months in federal prison for contempt of court following his defense of a Communist leader on trial for advocating the overthrow of the government.

We learned about this in school during history while discussing McCarthyism. The person he defended was not a Communist leader, he was an alleged communist accused by McCarthy.

I'm sure they are both riddled with holes, a lot like the thinking of the people who forward them.

Looks like another Whitewater, Maltese, but I think even Ken Starr might have trouble making anything of this.
