First Gay Congressman Dead: RIP Gerry Studds

Studds, First Openly Gay Person Elected to Congress, Dead at 69
    By JAY LINDSAY
    Associated Press
    Saturday, October 14, 2006; 11:52 AM

BOSTON (AP) -- Former U.S. Rep. Gerry Studds, the first openly gay person elected to Congress, died early Saturday at Boston Medical Center, several days after he collapsed while walking his dog, his husband said.

Studds fell unconscious Oct. 3 because of what doctors later determined was a blood clot in his lung, Dean Hara said.

Studds regained consciousness, remained in the hospital, and seemed to be improving. He was scheduled to be transferred to a rehabilitation center, but his condition deteriorated Friday and he died at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Hara said.

Hara, who married Studds shortly after gay marriage was legalized in Massachusetts in 2004, said Studds was a pioneer who gave courage to gay people everywhere by winning re-election after publicly acknowledging his homosexuality.

"He gave people of his generation, or my generation, of future generations, the courage to do whatever they wanted to do," he said.

Studds was first elected in 1972 and represented Cape Cod and the Islands, New Bedford, and the South Shore for 12 Congressional terms. He retired from Congress in 1997.

In 1983, Studds acknowledged his homosexuality after a former Congressional page revealed he'd had a relationship with Studds a decade earlier.

Studds was censured by the House for having sexual relations with the page. He acknowledged having sex with a 17-year-old male page in 1973 and making sexual advances to two others and admitted an error in judgment, but did not apologize.
    RIP, and thanks, fucking Republicans.

Re: First Gay Congressman Dead: RIP Gerry Studds

Representative Studds engaged in sex with a 17 year old male page. A page Mr. Studds provided alcohol to and then took sexual advantage of. Mr. Studds did not have the decency to resign his seat, nor did the Congress have the balls to throw his ass out. Mr. Studds recieved a censure, of course he turned his back on the Congress as it was read. The Democrats gave Mr. Studds three standing ovations after this shameful display.

Not a role model for gay folks, I'm afraid. Now he gets to answer to a higher power.

Legal and consentual. Hmmm. 16 or 17, I guess it makes a difference. Again a Dem that is not held to account for his misdeads.

Um, yeah. Of course, I don't expect our dirty birds from the extremist GOP to comprehend "consensual" and "legal," what with them all being helium-legged to begin with.

Just what does this mean? Oh, I understand the mentality from which the last phrase proceeds, but precisely what justifies the phrase? My recall is that the Democrats voted for censure.

So, it's OK for a sitting Congressman to fuck a liquored up 17 year old? The Congressmen are acting "In Loco Parentis", in place of the parents. They have a responsibility to protect these kids, not to be taking advantage of them.

Foley was a scumbag. He quit and was repudiated by his party. Studds was an even bigger scumbag. He was unrepentent and embraced by his party as a hero. The morons in his district even re-elected him a number of times.

Maybe Congressman should start fucking each other. At least we'd get a break from getting fucked by them!

It was a consensual relationship and even 10 years after the affair the page stood by his side and told the press that is was totally consensual.

    Spin away.

How was he not held accountable? He was investigated, censured by the House 420-3 and then judged by the voters in his home state.

    What exactly should have happened?

I agree with Jackoroe. What Studds did was wrong, if not worse than Foley. The only thing that has been confirmed with Foley is he had sex with a 21 year-old former page after developing a relationship with him at the age of 18. Studds liquored up a current Page and then had sex with him and somehow got away with it..

    A double standard indeed.

Of course you'd agree: you, after all, think Bush is pro-gay.

I refer you to the fact that Studds was censured by the House for his so-called "crimes" and he faced his voters (successfully, I'd add) for their disposition.

You so-called "claim" that Studds behavior was "worse" than that of the GOP's venal and reckless mishandling of the Foley scandal, and I'd disagree. After all, the Speaker, it certainly seems, knew about Foley's pedo ways for several years -- he did nothing, of course. Yet somehow you think that this conspiracy, this shock-and-awe of America's youth is somehow less loathsome than that of Studds. Huh. Must be that GOP moral relativism at play...

Bottom line is bringing up Studds like he's some kind of hero is pretty "off". Alfie - your post says "In 1983, Studds acknowledged his homosexuality after a former Congressional page revealed he'd had a relationship with Studds a decade earlier."

So if I understand this correctly. He acknowledges being gay after being caught - not so "brave". And he had sex with a minor. So how is he a hero?

He is a hero to Alpo because his first name is Democrat. The same blind trust that ended in all these Republican lawbreakers. The good ole gen is just a party line stomper. It is too bad he can't come up with his own viewpoint.

Now chance, must I scape you off the ceiling again? Calm down -- let go and let God.

There. Now chance, where did I say Studds was my hero? Could you please provide a quote? Now, fact is, chance, his sins were inconsiderable in comparison to your true party's criminal negligence, but I don't expect you to admit that. After all, you still claim to be a Democrat.

Studds was out locally, to his voters. Nationally he was not known as a gay politician.

So if he isn't a hero. Then why did you post this story? Then you sarcastically thank the Republicans for his affair or were you thanking them for the blood clot? Seriously the GOP has the majority but they don't prees a button and drop retired Pedo's do they? Wait maybe the page was actually Foley in highschool? The plot thickens.

scape me off the ceiling? you are off Alfie - OFF

you posted about Studds why? cause you think he was someone to admire? look up to? a reasonable assumption. Given your "fucking republicans" ending

So perhaps you should get off the ceiling

As for "Republicans vs. Studds" - and a comparion of their "sins" - didn't know that was an option. Pretty strange comparison General - I think perhaps you've been in too many battles.

To Mattie Mich - thanks for the clarification on the Studds situation

I hadn't heard that anything had been established that wasn't consensual or legal.
Are you smearing (again), or is there something new?

For all we know, Studds was Foley's inspiration.
And yes, getting someone liquored up in order to have sex is worse than anything Foley has done; in most places that's rape, no different than drugging someone (well, it IS drugging!) or knocking someone unconscious first. Use of any drug to lower another person's resistance is rape -- end of story.
And anyone who will hold up a rapist as an example is pretty despicable.

Why do you guys keep saying he got the guy drunk and had sex with him? They had an ongoing relationship. It was not just a one time thing. According to the Washington Post, when the scandal broke the former page stood by Studds during the press conference and said it was consensual.

As far as Foley goes I don't think he has done anything illegal, and I don't mean that as an opinion. His biggest sin is in the eyes of the conservatives and the committee members he worked with on preventing the exploitation of children.

Foley's biggest mistake was hitting on a teen, online, who was repulsed by his request for pics and information - the page that finally made the formal complaint. He said "this really freaked me out" and repeatedly used the word "sick" when he told Sen. Alexander's office.

How will we ever know what would have happened had the Studds relationship never been made into a big deal? Would he have ever come out nationally? Would he have been so vocal about civil/gay rights? marriage equality? AIDS/HIV research? I'm sure he would have been just as vocal as he was for poverty, education, the fishing industry and the environment. As times changed and society adapted would he have been more open on a national level? We'll never know. But we do know what he accomplished after 1983 and for that I am thankful.

I wonder what Foley will do to make the world a better place after his dark period is over? Studds stepped up, Bill Clinton has, Jesse Jackson hasn't been stopped by scandal, neither has Ted Kennedy. What will Foley do? And what about DeLay? Gingrich?

    My bad....

The first thing I checked on-line echoed what I'd read here. Being on dial-up, which takes like three minutes to even load the first page in a place like Wikipedia or a major newspaper, I didn't look further -- oops.

I'd forgotten the deal about the kid standing beside him! That makes a big difference.

So maybe he's worthy of note -- but the jibe at the Publicans was rude and uncalled for.
