Should've phrased that differently. In my pursuit of a colourful use of the language, I became too specific. What I meant was that if Phelps starts to target African-Americans or women, a lot more people would be up in arms than is the case right now. Of course that's only from what I get in the media and via the internet, since I don't live in the USA.

There is still time during his life on earth to have an epiphany, and repent his ways.

I had to write an essay on gay marriage and spent a little time discussing Phelps' position on gays and thus gay marriage. In the margin my professor wrote "These people are not to be taken seriously". Thats a pretty damning statement from a philosophy guy. In fact, I haven't met anyone who really takes his position seriously, even people who don't like gays at all. His position is the extreme of the extreme.

He might get a little more press were his position on another group, but I don't think it would be too much, or too different. Even people like Pat Robertson and Falwell keep their distance from this guy.

This asshole Phelps was here in Delaware about 20 minutes from where I live protesting at the funeral of soldier killed in Iraq. Believe me there were many of us who came out to protest them and formed a human shield that kept him and his inbred congregation from Westboro Baptist Church out of the area where these people were trying to grieve for their loved one. And I say "inbred" because most of the members of this church are members of his family. YOIKES!

To answer your original question, you would probably face assault and battery charges. Since Phelps and most of his 13 children are lawyers, you would probably face one of them in court. Depending on which state you did it in, you might be charged with felony aggravated assault and a misdemeanor charge of battery. In other words, for one punch, you could charged with two crimes.

Sorry, I started this post after reading the Matthew shepard thread. I reread his story to refresh my memory and learned that the Phelps clan protested his funeral and asked permission to build a giant fake gravestone saying something nasty about him on it (I won't say it for your sake) but failed.

It hurt me when I first heard about them but after a while it changed to anger. Just remember that the whole world hates them, not just America.
