Why do some gays vote Republican?

Yeah ostrich is the future beef and his observation will hopefully be realized by gay men who fail to look at results yet claim the Dems are doing something for them. Lip service is just that, from both parties. Check out 'Ole Hill's website...not so much on gay issues. The Site: Hillary Clinton. She does have something on the back page and even that isn't even a constant effort, it is old tired and retreaded from her Hubbies weak efforts that was supposed to be on our behalf. I will grant you though she at least gives it lip service. It worked for Bill.

The observation about open primaries was interesting. IIRC a dissenting opinion said that if the public was funding the election then the public ought to be able to vote however they wished, i.e. as expressed by the referendum, whereas if the parties wanted closed elections, they ought to pay for them and run them. That made sense to me!

to be honest, I don't know why any gay person would vote for anyone in the republican party. Really I don't.

Let me put this in a persepective. Forget about the offical Democrat and Republican parties for a minute and let's look at the grassroot part of things. Most liberal and Democratic organizations SUPPORT gay marriage as well as EQUALITY for all minorites. Not to mention that they support the idea of ECONOMIC EQAULITY for everyone. Such organizations are GLAAD, MoveOn.org, and the like.

Now let's look at the conservative and Republican side of their grassroots. A majority of their organizations are very much against GAY MARRIAGE and CIVIL RIGHTS for all gays. Plus they are very XENOPHOBIC and also RASCIST towards minorites. Not to mention that these organizations are run by theocrats. Such groups are Focus on the Family, the 700 Club, American Family Institue etc.

Now I'd like one of the close--er gay republican on here to tell me what the right-wing groups have done for gay rights, not TAX BREAKS or MILITARY IDEALS, gay rights.

This is why I'm glad I'm a Libertaran.

Read closely above and you'll see that the Republicans, on the whole, don't want us, while the Democrats, on the whole, do want us... to be a special interest in their camp, expected to bow down and vote as they say in exchange for some nice slogans.

I'm against gay marriage, and I think anyone with a slight amount of reason and a grasp of human rights would be as well. But I am not going to vote Republican, either. Democrats believe in parcelling out enough liberty to keep their pets happy; Republicans believe in a little liberty, too, but mainly for themselves and their money sources. I believe in a lot of liberty, because I believe people are competent to make decisions for themselves and take care of themselves, or would be if it weren't for the legacy of liberalism on the one hand and lockstep religious militancy on the other.

I think the question really related to the motivation behind the voting--not the power of gays to change the outcomes of elections. Rather, so long as the Republicans (or a faction within) insist that gays are immoral and should have a second-class life, why would someone support that? That's an issue well worth exploring.

Exactly. Problem here is that the gay republicans are'nt explaining why they vote Republican and how that relates to their opinion on the gay/bi community.

Then again there are some people on here who get off on shit-eating and incest so maybe this is'nt the best place to read thoughful posts.*snicker*

But still I tend to lean toward voting Republican, and I have already cast my absentee ballot to (hopefully) re-elect our great Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
I have always felt a bit defensive though when my fellow gay friends find out about my Republican leanings. For me I find that homophobia is pretty evenly split between the two major parties. There are great and gay-friendly politicians on "both sides of the aisle."

Fortunately, my vote against the homophobic and otherwise unspeakable Arnold Schwarzenegger will cancel yours out. One of Arnold's many negative "accomplishments" while assuming the role of governor was vetoing the gay marriage bill passed by the Legislature, which WOULD have made (and might still make, when Governor Angelides signs it) California the first state in which gay marriage rights were enacted by legislature.

Oh, and please name one, just one, "great and gay-friendly" politician on the Republican side of the aisle.

As it stands, marriage is a special privilege granted, under law, to only a certain segment of the population. In practice, that makes them a privileged class, a notch above everyone else.

Asking for the law to recognize gay marriage is nothing more, nor nothing less, than asking to be added to the privileged class, to become part of an elite whose relationships are Recognized by the State.

The correction when a law restricts the rights of some is to abolish the law, not reduce the number of those whose rights are restricted. Support for gay marriage is aiding and abetting the continuation of a privileged class, on the condition that we be allowed in! Then gays will sit with heteros and congratulate themselves for being "the right people"...

... while meanwhile, traditions of marriage embodied in religious and ethnic groups not so numerous as gays, will continue to languish and be downtrodden -- all with happy support from the "gay community".

Some here would rather we not vote Republican, because the Republicans support the status quo, leaving us as second-class citizens -- a not unreasonable argument, for those to whom the subject is a high priority. But I tell you that if the Democrats officially support gay marriage, then to vote for them would be to vote for keeping many Americans in second-class status, while we got to step up a notch above them, finally accepted.

Only a vote for a proposal to eliminate marriage from the laws, and replace it with recognition of all forms of solemn partnership between consenting adults, is a vote for rights and liberty. Some religions permit polygamy; that must be respected, in spite of the fears of the "pure in heart". And, yes, Senator holier-than-thou, if five people want to get "married", or "bonded", or whatever word they wish, that too must be respected -- because it's right there in "God created all men equal", and right there in "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". It's called "freedom of association", it's called "human dignity" and "mutual respect", and above all it's called "freedom".

So, yeah, I meant to say that. And I'd rather not have the right at all than have it at the expense of my neighbor who is left without it.
