    San Francisco Newbie

    Hi guys!

I just moved to the San Francisco area about two months ago and I'm still trying to find the cool, local places to hang out and meet new friends. It's weird being in a city by yourself. Do you know of any good places, gay or straight, where you can go to meet a young crowd and just hang out? I've been to a few places in teh Castro, like Badlands, which is a bit too intense for me at times. I'm looking to meet friends right now, not the occasional hook up just yet Anyway, if you have suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

I had a really fun time at Badlands last time I was down in SF. It's a fun place, but I'm not sure it's the right place to necessarily meet new people. Good ways of meeting new people (in any town) are joining some sort of gay club (athletic, outdoors, poetry, whatever) or doing volunteer work that's somewhat gay focused (HIV/AIDS related, helping queer youth, political activism). Fortunately, in a place like San Francisco there are all sorts of organizations like this for virtually anything you can think of. Other ideas include taking a class at a local community college or getting some gay roommates.

Take care when the first storm of the season comes. Don't get blown away, bro'.
Winter can arrive rough in San Francisco. But it usually behaves okay when it settles in.

It ain't that easy making friends in SF.

Sex is everywhere you care to look. So, it is the good, ole' cliche: Cash or Sex or both, if possible.

Yup, I'd be joining a club, meeting up the guys from work, hittin' on the Craig's List ever so often and just enjoying the city on my own, too.

If you can afford it, you are probably living in the nicest place on earth.

    Sup Sparky,

I've lived in SanFran for 4 years now. Like you, I haven't been around the gay community yet... like you I've strolled down Castro on a Friday night and visited a few gay bars, but it's sometimes overwhelming for me.

I don't think I'm comfortable in my own skin yet (recently came out).

Anyways, we should meet up sometime for a bite to eat or whatever. Hit me back sometime if you are interested. Take care bro, and good luck.

Hey, welcome to San Francisco! I've been here for 11 years and totally love it.

My suggestion would be to find some activity you like to do and then find a gay group in SF that does it (almost guaranteed you will). There are TONS of sports groups, activity groups, movie groups, board games groups, sex groups - whatever you want, it's here. Let me know what you're into and I can probably point you in the right direction.

A couple of cool places just to hang out - Cafe Flore on Market/Sanchez is nice for hanging and boy watching; The GLBT Center can be cool -they have lots of activites and a little restaurant/bar; the Peets coffee on Marketi in the Castro; Sweet Inspirations on Market in the Castro; or for bars, i like the more low key ones - the Pilsner on Church and Market, the Mix on 18th and Castro, or Mobys on 18th and Hartford.

Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions. Welcome!

I mean when the rainy season settles in it sometimes does so all at once and you'd better be hanging on to something heavy.

    Re: San Francisco Newbie

San Francisco is a great place to live... I've lived here a majority of my 23 years, and just recently came home. That being said, it can be a very overwhelming place to meet people who just want to be friends. There are some good places to hang out, but the bars and clubs aren't the best place to be meeting guys. Anyways, always looking for friends if you wanna chat or what not.
