    bagpipes

Y'know, no two days are the same in this job. Some days I love it, some days I don't. But what keeps it fresh is when an event never turns out the way you thought.
Take tonight for example. 50 or so 16-18 year olds coming in for "dinner and a brief quiz". Fine. No bother. Easy as pie.

Nobody told me they were gaelic. Nobody told me there would be a bagpiper. And nobody told me the piper would warm up about 2 feet away from my desk because she thought I wasn't there.
I got the fright of my life. And they were flat. Terribly, noticably flat. Dear God my ears were bleeding. And then the applause started. Don't encourage her people, please!
If an animal made that noise you'd have it put down. She's terrible.

But there's no stopping her. She seems to be going for all 93 verses of whichever tune this is.

Who hates flat bagpipes? Show of hands....
I'm not saying that she isn't a terrific little actress, but when she was appearing in The Diary of Anne Frank, when the SS came to the apartment, the audience rose as one and yelled "She's in the Attic!"

    Re: bagpipes

Bagpipes when played well are heavenly.

Funny you should mention this. The old man and I were in the back yard last week and I hear bagpipes. Naturally I start thinking maybe I've had enough scotch for the evening. But he hears it too. It turns out one of my neighbours plays the bagpipes with the Chicago police. He was practicing for a funeral.

Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day.
Give a man religion, and he'll starve praying for a fish.

    Re: bagpipes

Here in the U.S., unfortunately, bagpipes are all too often connected with funeral processions. They then are considered to be too mournful a musical instrument to be taken seriously for any other purpose.

But thanks to PBS and an occasional BBC program which features them in public performances, they can be quite enjoyable to listen to -- when played by professionals, not the musician you had the misfortune to encounter.

You may now run screaming for your place of employment, shouting something about having your eardrums ruptured.

I love the bagpipes when properly tuned and played (thus I've never attempted them). If she was 1/3 as bad as you've presented her, she'd have quit playing because I'd have killed her.

    Re: bagpipes

Being a piper myself of some accomplishment, I can sympathize with anyone who can't stand hearing them played badly. The fact is, they are highly tunable and, when played correctly after proper instruction, can be quite enjoyable. Even I wouldn't want to hear them in bad conditions such as those you mention, and even I can't take more than an hour or two of them in an enclosed place. That's why I have a smaller, sweeter sounding pipe that I play when I just want to practice in the house.

Not that wild about them when they're played well, either...

Normally I love them of course. But not when they are unexpectedly about a foot and a half away from my head and flat. I actually heard the piper say "I think they're a bit broken. I'll just play anyway". There must have been a leak somewhere, as each note started ok, but got flat quickly. Imagine it if you can

Sadly, I can imagine it all too well. Let's just say there's one particular street performer here who I'd love to kick in the nuts.

Then again, there was a street performance festival a few weeks ago and there was one piper I listened to for at least fifteen minutes. Absolute heaven.

The people 3 houses down the block from me, their kid has been learning how to play the bagpipes. They make him practice outside. It's not so bad, now that the cooler weather is here, and the windows aren't open as much as they were a month or so back.

I'm not sure what they're going to do when winter gets here ... send him to the garage with a little electric heater, maybe?

You do realize that I was attempting (and apparently failing) to be funny, right?
