Re: Belief-O-Matic -- A personality quiz about your religious and spiritual beliefs

^You don't have to believe in a god(s) or deity(-ies) to be spiritual. I don't believe in them and I sure as hell (no pun intended) don't believe in the bible with it's narrow minded, contradictory and bigoted view, and which was most probably written by a despised and bitter old man who was never loved by his mother (sorry for the Freudian slip but I'd bet he would probably agree here) in a time when women did no more than clean, cook and look after the children. Ultimately, despite what is written within, it is open to interpretation, and as we're all different therefore we all have our own view points.

Re: Belief-O-Matic -- A personality quiz about your religious and spiritual beliefs

    My top 5:

    1. Secular Humanism (100%)
    2. Unitarian Universalism (91%)
    3. Liberal Quakers (87%)
    4. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (84%)
    5. Nontheist (75%)

    Secular Humanists:

    Belief in Deity
Not considered important. Most Humanists are atheists or agnostics.

    Incarnations
    Same as above.

    Origin of Universe and Life
The scientific method is most respected as the means for revealing the mysteries of the origins of the universe and life.

    After Death
An afterlife or spiritual existence after death is not recognized.

    Why Evil?
No concept of “evil.” Reasons for wrongdoing are explored through scientific methods, e.g. through study of sociology, psychology, criminology.

    Salvation
No concept of afterlife or spiritual liberation or salvation. Realizing ones personal potential and working for the betterment of humanity through ethical consciousness and social works are considered paramount, but from a naturalistic rather than supernatural standpoint.

    Undeserved Suffering
No spiritual reasons but rather a matter of human vulnerability to misfortune, illness, and victimization.

    Contemporary Issues
The American Humanist Association endorses elective abortion. Other contemporary views include working for equality for homosexuals, gender equality, a secular approach to divorce and remarriage, working to end poverty, promoting peace and nonviolence, and environmental protection.

    1. Unitarian Universalism (100%)
    2. New Thought (98%)
    3. Neo-Pagan (97%)
    4. New Age (96%)
    5. Liberal Quakers (95%)
    6. Scientology (87%)
    7. Mahayana Buddhism (86%)
    8. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (85%)
    9. Taoism (83%)
    10. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (82%)
    11. Hinduism (75%)
    12. Theravada Buddhism (71%)
    13. Reform Judaism (65%)
    14. Secular Humanism (62%)
    15. Jainism (60%)
    16. Sikhism (56%)
    17. Bah' Faith (54%)
    18. Orthodox Quaker (54%)
    19. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (35%)
    20. Nontheist (32%)
    21. Orthodox Judaism (31%)
    22. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (28%)
    23. Seventh Day Adventist (27%)
    24. Jehovah's Witness (23%)
    25. Islam (22%)
    26. Eastern Orthodox (17%)
    27. Roman Catholic (17%)

My #1 is too diverse though, the closest thing to a belief system I would have is mostly Mahayana Buddhism. I put Atheist whenever religion is asked of me.

Funny that, I was raised Roman Catholic, but it's at the bottom of my list.

My views are pretty much a cross between the concepts of atheism and paganism... last time I did this test Unitarian Universalism and neo-Paganism were the top two, with Mainline to Liberal Christan Protestant somewhere near the bottom... go figure!

As a liberal minded protestant, I was a bit suprised to top out as an orthodox quaker! However, as my beliefs are personal, this quiz could only try to link me up w/ whatever larger group seems to blend w/ my beliefs. Happily (& sadly) most religious belief isn't monolithic

Hmmm, interesting, I came up 100% Reform Judaism. I am (or was raised Catholic). Funny thing is, I've looked into Judaism before, as they are one of the few religions that do not believe in an eternal hell. So I figured, if I am going to hell for being gay, at least it wouldn't be forever! See, I didn't even have to tell you I was raised Catholic, did I?

Well, with my background -- Jewish/Christian -- none of this surprises me. I actually wanted to became a priest, but given my orientation, decided to opt for other pursuits (theater and American studies, especially.)

Theology is still a major driving force in my life, and I'm appalled at the number of horrors perpetuated on humanity in the name of "God." My closest friends still think I should consider ministry, since I'm prone to rant about it anyway.

(My grandmother, by the way, would NOT be pleased that Reformed Judaism didn't make it to my top 10 at least! LOL)

    Belief in Deity
Very diverse beliefs--Unitarian/Universalists welcome all deity beliefs as well as nontheistic beliefs. Some congregations are formed for those who share a common belief, e.g. Christianity.

    • Incarnations
Very diverse beliefs, including belief in no incarnations, or that all are the embodiment of God. Some believe Christ is God's Son, or not Son but "Wayshower."

    • Origin of Universe and Life
Diverse beliefs, but most believe in the Bible as symbolic and that natural processes account for origins.

    • After Death
Diverse beliefs, but most believe that heaven and hell are not places but are symbolic. Some believe heaven and hell are states of consciousness either in life or continuing after death; some believe in reincarnation; some believe that afterlife is nonexistent or not known or not important, as actions in life are all that matter.

    • Why Evil?
Most do not believe that humanity inherited original sin from Adam and Eve or that Satan actually exists. Most believe that God is good and made people inherently good but also with free will and an imperfect nature that leads some to immoral behavior. Diverse beliefs. Some believe wrong is committed when people distance themselves from God. Some believe in “karma,” that what goes around comes around. Some believe wrongdoing is a matter of human nature, psychology, sociology, etc.

    • Salvation
Some believe in salvation through faith in God and Jesus Christ, along with doing good works and doing no harm to others. Many believe all will be saved, as God is good and forgiving. Some believe in reincarnation and the necessity to eliminate personal greed or to learn all of life’s lessons before achieving enlightenment or salvation. For some, the concepts of salvation or enlightenment are irrelevant or disbelieved.

    • Undeserving Suffering
Diverse beliefs. Most Unitarians do not believe that Satan causes suffering. Some believe suffering is part of God’s plan, will, or design, even if we don’t immediately understand it. Some don’t believe in any spiritual reasons for suffering, and most take a humanistic approach to helping those in need.

    • Contemporary Issues
The Unitarian Universalist Association’s stance is to protect the personal right to choose abortion. Other contemporary views include working for equality for homosexuals, gender equality, a secular approach to divorce and remarriage, working to end poverty, promoting peace and nonviolence, and environmental protection.

Re: Belief-O-Matic -- A personality quiz about your religious and spiritual beliefs

For the record: I was born into and raised as a Roman Catholic but I lost my faith in it (mainly the "jesus is the son of God" thing) and eventually left the religion around four years ago. I then got attracted to Islam and within months seriously considered becoming a Muslim but gave that up and just left organized religions altogether.

    1. Reform Judaism (100%)
    2. Liberal Quakers (88%)
    3. Unitarian Universalism (87%)
    4. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (82%)
    5. Bahá'í Faith (80%)

Dang.....the result hit my main beliefs right on the bullseye!!! lol

    REFORM JUDAISM:

    Belief in Deity
Beliefs vary among adherents, including that of nonbelief or questioning belief, and all are welcome and considered personal, but the official stance is that there is one God Almighty--Creator, all-powerful, ever-present, and all knowing--formless, incorporeal spirit.

    • Incarnations
None, as only God is worshiped.

    • Origin of Universe and Life
Most believe that Genesis is to be understood symbolically. God created and controls all phenomena revealed by modern science.

    • After Death
Reform Jews believe in the world to come and a messianic age (but no individual Messiah). Personal beliefs in the details of afterlife are diverse, as there is no official position. Some believe in heaven and hell but only as states of consciousness; some believe in reincarnation; some believe God is all-forgiving; and some may not believe in an actual afterlife. Regardless, Judaism generally focuses on living a virtuous life, rather than working toward reward after death.

    • Why Evil?
No original sin. Most often, Satan is interpreted symbolically to represent selfish desires that are inherent within all. God gave people free will, and people are responsible for their actions.

    • Salvation
The main emphasis is on living the kind of life that God commands, which will surely be rewarded if there is an afterlife. Most believe God is forgiving of all; there is no hell to which some are condemned. Salvation is achieved through faith and prayer to God, good works, concern for the earth and humanity, and behavior that does no harm to others. The extent to which one follows Jewish Law is an individual decision.

    • Undeserved Suffering
God gave humans free will to feel pleasure and pain, and his purpose in allowing deep suffering of the innocent must be good even if mysterious. It is generally believed that God suffers along with the sufferer. More important than knowing why God allows suffering is to work to help those in need.

    • Contemporary Issues
Judaism holds that human life begins upon first breath, and Jewish law requires abortion if necessary to save the mother's life prior to birth. Most believe potential human life should never be terminated casually, but it is generally regarded as a personal decision, especially within the first 40 days of pregnancy. Homosexuality: Homosexuals are God's creation, and Jewish instruction is to love our neighbors as ourselves. Reform (and Conservative) Judaism have a long history of support for homosexual rights.

Re: Belief-O-Matic -- A personality quiz about your religious and spiritual beliefs

Your Top 3 Faith Match Profiles Are:
    1. Secular Humanism (100%)
    2. Unitarian Universalism (90%)
    3. Nontheist (83%)

    • Belief in Deity
Not considered important. Most Humanists are atheists or agnostics.

    • Incarnations
    Same as above.

    • Origin of Universe and Life
The scientific method is most respected as the means for revealing the mysteries of the origins of the universe and life.

    • After Death
An afterlife or spiritual existence after death is not recognized.

    • Why Evil?
No concept of “evil.” Reasons for wrongdoing are explored through scientific methods, e.g. through study of sociology, psychology, criminology.

    • Salvation
No concept of afterlife or spiritual liberation or salvation. Realizing ones personal potential and working for the betterment of humanity through ethical consciousness and social works are considered paramount, but from a naturalistic rather than supernatural standpoint.

    • Undeserved Suffering
No spiritual reasons but rather a matter of human vulnerability to misfortune, illness, and victimization.

    • Contemporary Issues
The American Humanist Association endorses elective abortion. Other contemporary views include working for equality for homosexuals, gender equality, a secular approach to divorce and remarriage, working to end poverty, promoting peace and nonviolence, and environmental protection.

    a) Pick one and believe it with all your might. Taaaa daaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
    b) Thrash it out. Hear arguments. Make arguments. Examine evidence. Wait annoyingly long periods of time without any apparent progress. Hone in. Take two steps forward one back. Find things out by accident that turn out to be verifiable and reliable. Think creatively then test objectively.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did.

Re: Belief-O-Matic -- A personality quiz about your religious and spiritual beliefs

'What is true'^ and 'what isn't true' are both important to me (us.) Imagination precedes verification and deserves credit.

Sometimes a literal explanation is handy, and sometimes a story ought to be told.

    Me?
Crudely accurate (I don't think the quiz had a real category for my type):

    1. Unitarian Universalism (100%)
    2. Mahayana Buddhism (88%)
    3. Liberal Quakers (87%)

The quiz is biased from a christian background. It would be interesting to look at something that represented world religions more generally.

Just a note; if you ask for the full results to be sent to an email address, Belief.com immediately starts sending out spam email such as "Daily Inspiratiion"; I had three in a row and had to unsubscribe and list the site as junkmail. Just sayin'...

After doing the first 4 or 5 questions, I realized that my choices were not available -- so I quit.

The questions seemed to be to "leading" to some beliefs.

    Interesting thread to resurrect.

I did it again, got the same results, ignored the same six questions as having no decent answers.

I find the quiz shallow, a little slanted, and loaded with assumptions -- but as entertainment it was fun.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

    My top five:

    Orthodox Quaker 100%
    Liberal Protestant 91%
    Liberal Quaker 86%
    Conservative Christian 81%
