Tamato: Is it a Fruit or Vegetable

I don't care what stupid scientist or teachers say about the supermarket or whatever, I say it's a vegetable. It looks and tastes like a vegetable. It tastes nasty eating it plain like a vegetable where fruits taste good eating them by themselves. The insides looks like cucumber insides.

It's technically a fruit, because it contains its seeds, but it's eaten and cooked with as though it were a vegetable. Tomatoes, sliced thinly, with a little salad dressing... yum! Or nice fresh ones, cut in half and eaten with a dusting of salt...

.............UND, tomatoes with Lycopen (sp), is known to be an anti-oxidant and "will" help to fight bad things!!! lol

My man says I am almost at a dangerous level of eating sooooo many of these great "fruits"!!!

I try to get him to eat more; but he's NOT that easy to convince to eat more of these wonderful fruits that taste like a vegetable!!!

Whenever there's a question of "red" sauce or "white" sauce, guess which one I opt to have??

RED, of course.......gotta have my "fruits"!!!

Unfortunately you can't be too sure about this...most recent studies have indicated that all this hype about antioxidants has no real substance, and the fact that antioxidants do good things in test tubes doesn't translate across to doing good things in the human body.

Just eat well and exercise a bit.

Obviously you've never had a durian. Those are fruits, and they are described (correctly) as smelling like rotting flesh and tasting like it and they have the consistancy of a year-old rotted peach.

Durian is sweet and tastes like fruit. It's not bad, I had it at a market I visited in Canada.

Ohh durian - I love durian! One of the many delights of work visits to SE Asia for me is the opportunity to get stuck into some fresh durian.

    Teadrinker has it right:

in botanical terms, the piece of a plant that contains the seeds is a fruit; in gardening terms whether it's a fruit depends mostly on how it's used.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

if it has seeds it is a fruit.
bananas are usually eaten young in the west before the seeds have developed.
seedless grapes are still a fruit.

Tomatoes that 'taste like vegetables' usually taste like that because they are picked before the flavour has developed, in order to get them to the shops... they are best eaten straight from the bush/plant they grow on.

Nuts, leugemes (?sp) etc are the seeds of a fruit.
    most herbs are vegetables
most spices are seeds of a fruit.

If I remember my history correctly a tomato is a fruit but was designated a vegetable by the US government so that a tariff or tax on imported fruits could be bypassed. If I can find the link to the site I read that on I will edit this post and provide the link.

Seeds do not make someting 100% a fruit.

Here you go, the most confusing defination I've ever read in my lifetime but provided by Webster's English Dictionary.

I regret to tell you but your description of durian is incorrect. They are usually described as "tasing like heaven, smelling like hell"! At home in Thailand, we have about 20 durian trees growing near the house. I am one of those who actually like the smell of them. It is amazing how many friends we have during the durian season! They are delish!

What about berries? A strawberry ISN'T actually a berry. Neither is a gooseberry. A blackberry IS a berry. So is a raspberry.
