Thread: Comics!

How about a brunette? She did dye her hair after all.

I did mean to ask, Emma's entire point for going against registration was that it would be a danger to the students if everyone knew where they were.. but doesn't everyone already know where they are?

oh. CAPTAIN AMERICA IS A STAR-SPANGLED CRIMINAL! It would have been mighty curious if it was Cap who was pro and Tony who was anti. I bet the world would explode.

    Re: Comics!

Cap could never be pro (See Marvel 1602). Tony Stark was probably the one who shot him in the head before they sent him through the portal.

Emma's rationale is that while technically the location fo the mutants is known, it isn't public knoweldge and publicized like the Registration Whores are. I mean, come on, televised de-maskings? And we all can see how well things are going for Mr. Parker.

Emma was right and Carol deserved the mind fuck. I see lots of shovels and I wouldn't have it any other way just to guilt Stark. Uber-tool...

    Re: Comics!

Actually, Millar said that de-maskings are NOT supposed to be televised. Parker only chose to do that as a full show of support for Tony, anyone else can just get a form and pass it over to S.H.I.E.L.D.

And in Grant's New X-Men, Charles revealed that they were mutants while he was on a talk show, so from what I know, it's definitely public knowledge. Even in Kyle and Yost's New X-Men, televison reports about 'Sentinels protecting the mutants in the Xavier Institute' were shown.

Oh. Long live COMMUNISM!!!!! And anything other than democracy! wahahah!

Hmm, you're right. But still, her point stands. It isn't like she's going to say "Oh hell, they know where we are, let's make it official."

If it were me, I'd systematically go through large amoutns of people and mind wipe the location, since Emma can't do every single mind at once.

BTW, isn't awesome that they've basically made it official that the cuckoos can utilize Cerebra with little harm? I'm pleased.

I think right now, my two favorite title are Astonishing for the sophistication and realism, and New X-Men for the punch and fun.

Oh, BTW, can anyone explain to me what the hell is going on with Polaris/Lorna?

What happened to her when she was Pestilence and how did she get her powers back and why is she back to that costume?

    Re: Comics!

I'm pretty sure that Lorna is STILL depowered, her powers are now some sort of weird Egyptian nanotech crap or whatever. Apparently, she's now the most powerful member of the Uncanny team.

And yep, the Cuckoos are awesome. It's also neat that they're showing the different personalities of the sisters, albeit in subtle ways, like how Mindee can't bear to say that Jay is gone, even though Pheobe doesn't even seem to flinch at the possibility.

Hmm, yeah, Jean could have reversed the whole 'public knows' on her own without any trouble, but she'd probably let that heart of gold get the better of her. Now if I were a telepath, I'd probably use it for nasty things, like forcing my straight crush to fall for me.

    Re: Comics!

I could never force my straight crush, but I'd see if he had any inklings, and if he did, I'd exploit it. But if not, I'd leave him be.

I wonder if they're pulling for that whole dynamic Mindee had against Jay and him interrupting her music. Being a 'music hater' or whatever.

I can see why they killed off/depowered all those characters, though, since they were nice in theory but just too powerful or too boring or too cumbersome. Like Sophia's power was too generic and her character was too 1-dimensional. Laurie was just too powerful and Jay's flight was too cumbersome and couldn't protect him (which is probably why Angel is used so little now). David they probably depowered because with the block in place, he's just like synch only without any powers and he's defenseless enough. He's practically just a temp-smart human. But I'm glad they kept him for some human character respect (see how respected he was with the Cuckoos). I figure he'll probably become like a Moira-type character.

When they switched writers, the old writers were kind of sad that they didn't get to follow through with the next story arc they were setting up (Laurie's father). I wonder how that would have gone...

Plus, they seemed to have dropped Wither's character all together and that love triangle between him, Laurie, and Cessily.

Yeah, at the very least I'd try and figure out how this one guy (who I love) really feels for me. especially since we've kinda hated each other from the first day we met (cliche much), and there's a small fanclub of horny chics who want to see us become a couple. I think I even remember a girl wanting to write a fanfic about us...

Well, with Elixir's new powers, I seriously doubt they'd have any need for silly little Wither anymore.

And I'm fairly certain that it's Austen who wanted to highlight Mindee was the Cuckoo with the most personality (giving her a bf and having her go as far as sock Sabretooth)

Laurie on the other hand, yeah, anyone who can kill Quentin Quire without so much as a sweat is definitely OP. I never liked David, and I miss Sofia because I get to see the sweeter side of Elixir when she's around

Eh, UA wasn't that good. I can't imagine UA 2 could be any better.

I really liked their names. Mindee, Phoebe, Esme, and Sophie. Celeste seemed a bit out there and not so much of an 'olde' name as the others.

I wish Sophie was still alive. Oh well, at least she shined

I liked Sophia because of how she made Hellion act. He was sweet when he was with her. I thought i tmight be interesting if they kept her there as his love interest and especially since he was such an up and coming mutant superiorist. It would be cool.

I think it would have been great to keep David and Sophia there as human liasons and researchers, etc. It would have made sense because Sophia has hardly any family and david's already staying there. The interesting bit would be that they used to be the co-heads of the New X-Men team and now depowered, they still work together to help the team somehow.

    But one can only dream...

No, that's not true, I don't think. In Mutant X, she tries to save Colossus from sinking into the ground but Selene disintegrates her glove causing her to permanently absorb him. That hinges, though, on whether or not Colossus was in metal form or human form while sinking.

Which is why I'm virtually shocked that this has actually been knocked down to the 4th page in the folder...

I have a question... would anyone be interested in helping keep alive a timeline of gay themes/characters in comics -- one which I've been working to complete on-and-off for the past 9 years or so? I might ask this in a new thread if no one notices it.

Please don't refer me to the site of those hacks in the GLA in response to this, please, please, *PLEASE*

    Re: Comics!

    Thanks for reviving this.

Yeah, latest issue was killer. Call me a dork, but I was actually the most pleased because Emma was actually drawn pretty again (she's been looking a bit ew lately).

Plus, that midn fuck at the end. At first I figured it'd be a fake-out, like some mind fuck that Perfection can do like be someone's interpretation of ultimate evil. But now that I think more and more about it, I wonder if it really is the embodiment of the White Queen. No doubt Cassie could have made a clone of Emma when they gave her Diamond Form and replicated her abilities and her penchant for evil as the White Queen. Maybe Emma's been under someone else's control. But why the monicker 'Perfection'? What makes the White Queen perfect?

Either way, I see this is a means to cause a semi-bridge for Kitty and Emma in the future. This way, Kitty will fight what she always saw Emma as--The White Queen and having defeated her, will destroy that evil and paranoia inside her towards Emma--partially probably, like that truce between Emma and Rachel that got shamefully dropped.

Homo, you should check out the link in my sig. This guy is awesome at it and takes spectacular care and also responds excellently to new submitions. I happened to write the one about Ultimate Colossus and Wallace Wells from Scott Pilgrim.

    Re: Comics!

Yeah, at first I thought it was a mental projection of the White Queen or something, heck, I even thought that it was another Emma that was created when The Phoenix bonded with her in Endsong (ala the coccooned Jean Grey).

And the only explanation of Cassie making an Emma clone is if, back in New X-Men, she needed to make sure that there was a replacement Emma if ever the original one would get cold feet at the prospect of betraying the team - - something which is highly unlikely considering her mind control was second to none. Not to mention that it would do Cassie's character a major disservice should she play second fiddle to a telepath of a lower level to her.

As for her title Perfection, well, only Whedon can say for sure. Maybe she's truly evil, like, no shades of gray, which would make her like, the 'perfect' in that sense. Heck, she could be a manifestation Emma Frost's subconscious, released through some unknown stress, much like Onslaught was from Charles and Eric's. We are nreaing the ten-year anniv. after all. (Dear God, no)

Good point with the Kitty thing though, I gather that this whole thing would be very therapeutic for her. And I want Logan to stay young James forever. "I hate you Lord! I hate you!" Hehehehe, comedy gold.

I'm very tired of all this Wolverine stuff. There's nothing else to know, let's not make anything else. Let's stop tryign to make him into a God, let alone a God of Cool.

I'm starting to believe that the White Queen IS physical.

    Re: Comics!

I didn't realize this thread existed! Pretty cool! Must say that I've been disapponted with the whole Emma storyline in Astonishing. I thought if anyone would 'get' a redemptive character as Emma was turnig out to be, it would be the creator of Faith, Angel, and Spike, each of whom bear similarities to the White Queen (not to mention that I always thought the diamond-thing was a telekinetic thing that Emma did subconsciously, since she couldn't also access her telepathy whilst in that form). The current reveal is boring in comparison, IMO.
Still, it's better than Civil War! What part of being vigilantes don't the Marvel supertypes get? Of COURSE you're working outside the law. That's the point of the masks and the secret identities. Otherwise, you'd be cops, and get PAID. I'll still pick up whatever the Young Avengers are in, though. I really LIKED their series.

    Who says she's evil?
True, but Whedon's take so far has negated most of what we saw during Morrison's run, where Emma's 'turn' made sense, given the events she had endured. To have all of that have been a manipulation on the part of Cassandra ruins for me what were some great storytelling and character moments. To have Whedon, who, based upon his previous history of handling redemptive characters, I thought would do some GREAT Emma, turn around and make everything that happened 'unhappen' was disapponting to me.

    Re: Comics!

Good point. But still, Emma's done a lot of heroing even outside the Nova story arc, most of which were done without Nova making her remember their little deal at the last second. Her love for the Stepfords were genuine to say the least, and she made for a pretty valuable team player when they rescued Xorn. It's also a much better fit than having Emma help the X-Men only just so she could grab her purse back.

At any rate, the X-Offices only rationale is that 'people do what they have to', and I will be disappointed if she remain a villain (which I doubt), but I'm gonna have to wait for this entire arc to finish before I start feeling bad.

    Re: Comics!

That wasn't actually the reason. Look at what the cab driver was saying in that issue. Emma teamed with the X-Folk because their agenda and hers were now one and the same. However, her flippant explanation as to why she returned was completely in character for her. Loved the realtionship with the Stepfords as well, and you could see how Emma was affected by their 'turning' on her (which was at least in part her own fault).
    I hope Whedon surprises me.

Well, I don't much like reading into people's motivations, as was Emma's return would be either to teach or to destroy Cassandra, but should it have been the latter, then her allowing Nova's consciousness into the body of something that she could fully groom may have been her ticket to redemption.

Oh screw it, I jsut want to see Hellion in every X-title in existence.

I took her turn around in the cab to be her rememberance now by Cassandra Nova. And though Emma knew her position as a mole, she also was who she always had been. Emma's not the kind to let a conflict of interests stand int he way of what she wants. So she was always pure in her motives to protect the students and all that, but when it came to Cassie Nova, she knew what she had to do anyway.

Well, odds are that the rest of Marvel U is gonna catch up with Whedon when Civil War wraps up. Astonishing is a little too difficult to place within the current U, but with X-Men: Civil War homing on on how Scott isn't a pussy anymore, then that's probably the tying theme between the two titles.

I watched "Ultimate Avengers 2" the other day. Meh. Considering the gorgeous art of Bryan Hitch, the art direction in both Ultimate movies has been sadly lacking.

The only thing worthwhile in this DVD was the Ultimates featurette. They talked with Bryan Hitch and Mark Millar and they discussed the whole direction and theme of the comic book itself. That was worth the price of admission. Most of the time we only get to see the finished product and rarely ever get to hear from the creators and get their views.

    Government whore!!!

BTW, just read Civil War: Young Avengers Runaways 2...fuck yeah! I'm so pleased. The 'dating a skrull' conversation between Kat and Billy was so cute <3

Is Quentin Quire the voice talking in the Cuckoos heads in Warsong? Are allt he Cuckoos back? It really makes you think. I'm glad it's all coming together. This has been long overdue.

And I'm starting to see just how fuckign awesome adjectiveless X-Men is. I love how Anole was there to see Jean-Paul. It was so sweet and sad I hope they write more between the two. Not slash, mind you, (not that I'm opposed at all) but I really dig the mentor/mentee relationship they were building. Anole rocks

    Re: Comics!

If you look back at Endsong, the black and white thought bubbles that conversed with the cuckoos was the same bubble that was used for the Phoenix. Quentin's was normal jagged bubble, only with a green outline. I have to say that the 1st ish didn't really blow me away (disjointed story, Quentin again, SIlvestri-clone art), but I love those wacky girls enough to go through with the whole arc. Just hope it isn't ultimately pointless.

Anyway, yeah, they're kinda showing just how similar the two teams are. Truth is, I was supposed to wait for the 2nd hardcover of the Runaways (I love the team), so I was holding out on reading the tie-in to civil war - - unfortunately, I ended up getting spoiled as to who died by IGN's power Rankings, so, okay, ended up reading it. It's nothing special, but an okay way to pass the time.

I still don't read adjectiveless. You criminal.

    It's so damn, good though!

The writers are really flexing Rogue's leadership muscle and using her to her best ability. None of this Xtreme X-Men crap.

    Read it!

I haven't read Gert's death. I read the first hardcover (more or less) and picked up Civil War where they're fresh off of it, so it got spoiled for me. But I liked Gert. I hope the storyline was worth killing her off

I wasn't blown away either by the 1st issue and the art isn't great either (I think I still like it better overall to Endsong's airbrushed hooker/porn star look and vacant expressions) but hopefully all of this will be resolved well. Will the Cuckoos indeed receive TK as a secondary? Or will it just be Phoenix given? And it looks like they'll be revealing a lot of Cuckoos history.

And yes, I reread the first issue and they refer to the black bubble as 'she' so it's definitely the Phoenix.

    Re: Comics!

I'm just worried about how their newfangled powers may affect the X-Men. I mean, those three pretty psychics actually jumpstarted the Phoenix Potential (which to my recollection is impossible for non-omegas), no student could ever be allowed to be that strong without some major conflict in the status quo.

Side note, I like Land's hooker art. I wanted to see him draw the Cuckoos again so bad! (He's the only artist in existence to make Quentin look remotely handsome)

And yeah, I trust Vaughan to not kill people off for shock value, ala Bendis. He's leaving Runaways by issue 24 though. Bad news. Good news is, it's the unbe-fucking-lievably talented Joss Whedon who will replace him. Hello pull-list!

    Re: Comics!

But Quentin was so much more interesting as the scrawny geek/psychopath. It seems like all the Marvel characters are buff. Quentin was interesting as a scrawny chicken boy (one of the reasons I grew to love Beak and Angel, actually).

It feels like they're not taking risks with their character designs for featured characters, exception being, say, Hank or Santo. Give me the days of Cypher and Wolfsbane and Marrow and all that just to spice it up a bit and make it a bit more visually appealing.

Take the character designs somewhere different, not crappy, just different.

BTW, I bought a back issue of the X-Men Christmas thing. It was cute and made me feel a hell of a lot better than I usually do reading X-Men. New X-Men's also pretty damn good, too. I just hoep they can make them function like an actual team instead of a group that each does their own thing during a battle.

I think the Cuckoos are Phoenix potential right now just because everyone wants them to be. Remember that Quentin never took up the Phoenix force, so maybe that's the setup? Besides, something is obviously going wrong because the Phoenix is telling them they're not ready yet but for some reaosn they're manifesting it anyway.

Effortless: I agree. The line about the sisters helping (needingg) each other may have been a give-away.

Lu: About the sisters, yeah, I love them to bits, but I don't think they should have Phoenix'd them up. I mean, the Phoenix force is supposed to be a milestone, not a right of passage for every telepath in school. As for Quentin, well, I tend to surround myself with beautiful people, so I guess my clique inclinations jumped over to my comic book wants.

By the way... Marvel comics coming out this week. Goodbye moneys! http://comics.ign.com/articles/733/733210p2.html

    Re: Comics!

No, that's true. I just wish the comics had that gothic edgy feel during the Morrisson writing/Quietly art run. That made the Cuckoos kind of scary and fascinating. Now they're kind of like hot simulacrae of what they were.

    Oh well.

And seriously, scrawny quentin finally taming himself and possibly helping the team in a supporting character kind of way would be sweet.

Have you been reading New? It's fantastic!

Also, are YA taking a hiatus since there's the Civil War story? Runaways isn't, so I was wondering if YA was out there as well...

That's true, but it certianly doesn't make them omega. And omega level would have no problem subduing the crowd, whereas it pushed Sophie over the edge to the point of almost dying.

Jean would have no problem immobilizing everyone with her TK, which makes her an omega teke. Xavier should have been good enough to stop the riot, why he didn't was beyond me. And asusming Bobby harnesses his powers like he should (and is in adjectiveless X-Men) he could have frozen everyone.

But the Cuckoos simply aren't at an omega level. Emma probably only lost to them in Warsong because of the Phoenix boost. Otherwise, she's capable of working around them individually and their gestalt.

That's a good point, but remember that Sophie had to take Kick and even then it was a trial. Two down and without Kick, logistically, there's no way.
