Actually, I do understand it. I was addressing his need to come here and 'share'. It wreaked of that usual cry-for-attention-I'm-not wanting-to-be -on-this-site -anymore-someone-tell-me-why-I-should-stay-passive-aggressive attitude that we've all seen many times from several members before him. Tomba had expressed the same sentiments in a roundabout way before. I just told him how I felt, and the comments he made before leaving didn't change that. I love him to death, and he's definitely great to have on this site...but I'm not rolling along with that.

When I get tired of JUB...you all will know. One day someone will think: hmmm...haven't seen Huntneo is ages! I don't feel the need to broadcast it.

In one of those rare moments where I'm being blunt and actually confessing something that may damage my reputation, I agree with you. I have said it before, probably too far back when I was a noob and most people didn't really interact with me, that I never understood the theatrics that accompany leaving JUB. I've been a member of many forum communities. When people are tired of them, they peter off without a word usually. Their accounts are still there, but you see they haven't logged in since x. This whole culture we have here of people coming to the foreground and talking about how the drama of JUB or whatever else is getting to them and they're thinking of self deleting, to me, always seemed melodramatic, like the digital version of a crying for help threat to commit suicide vicariously through avatar or something. If someone's unhappy here for whatever reason I totally understand them wanting to leave. I just never understood the whole publicity stunt of proclamations of thoughts of self-deletion leading up to doing or not-doing-it. When or if I get tired of JUB I'll likely just stop logging into it, or do it less and less over time and eventually disappear. Like 99% of people do at 99% of forums.

I'll confess that I'm pretty sure there's a new sockpuppet active on the forums, but I'm not sure I care enough to do anything but add him/her/it to my ignore list.

Hmmm, ok, I get where you're coming from there and can't really find fault with it.

At the same time, I like that he said it. The fact of the matter is that this place does have sort of an oppressively bleak feel to it, and the more people who point it out the better, IMO.

There's bleakness anywhere if you're looking for it. Is there a lot of crap that goes on? Sure...but there are a lot of interesting people and subjects that are chattered about and a sense of community still even after all these years. I don't have to agree with or love everyone here to appreciate there still is a lot more worth coming back for than not.

I saw Tombastep as a gentle soul. His love for animals especially impressed me. Did you all know that he worked with rescue animals?

It's actually really common on Facebook. There, you're less likely to see " think I'm going to delete my account" (although you do see it from time to time) than you are to see "I have too many friends - I'm going to be whittling my friend list down in the next day or two."

And even if this were really some sort of issue, how hard is it to tick off some boxes to either hide posts in your feed, or just remove some friends? But no - it always turns into some sort of bad reality show. As if to say "I'm going to be shortening my friend list. Will you make the cut? Are you a good enough friend to me to remain on my list of friends?" And the kicker is - some people fall for this. After the axe falls, they say "Whew - I made it!" or "I'm glad we're still friends."

I always figure this is a person I don't want to be friends with in any event. So whenever somebody on Facebook says something along these lines, I post "Let me give you a head start" and defriend them. And here's the thing - they invariably send me a friend request within the next 24 hours, with a note saying "No, silly, not YOU!"

Facebook isn't evil. It's a tool. Like a hammer or screwdriver. You can use a hammer to bash someone's skull in, or a screwdriver to stab someone in the eye. That just means you're not using the tool correctly.

Oddly, I didn't see much political bullshit during the election - it seems most of my conservative friends didn't think much of Romney. But now it's not truly a day unless I get at least three anti-gun-control posts, photos and memes. :)

Facebook is like Apple fanatics in reverse. All you ever hear from are the people who haaaaattteee it. Like you can never get mac people to stop talking about how wonderful Apple products are. It's not really that bad. I've said it before in some rant somewhere... but Facebook gives you SO MUCH control over who adds you, who sees you, who even KNOWS you're on facebook at all, who can read anything you post, etc., that when people say things like "omg I hate facebook it's so invasive", they are using it wrong, or lazily. You can even set it so that some friends or family can't see anything your other friends or family post or say on your facebook, ever.

To me it's a great way to keep tabs on people as they move around, change phone numbers or e-mail addresses and yet still be able to contact them without doing the old fashioned thing of having to try to call their mom or whatever and get their c urrent number. And a way to instantly send a message to one person or a lot of friends without having to dig through e-mail address books and hope they're all current.

There are people who get too invested with it or get into too much drama on it but that's 100% controllable and self-created.

I never found Tomba particularly annoying or fractious but certainly respect his choice to take a break if he isn't happy here on JUB.

Facebook does have one central, devastating flaw, however.

A person with a good memory can remember names of one's friends, so if that person should ever turn on you, he could find your friends and do a lot of damage, even if you yourself have unfriended and blocked him.

I deleted my Facebook profile for this reason.

Apropos the Mac fans--I guess I could call myself atypical in that fashion. I loved the Mac products circa 2003, but I have developed a certain level of disillusionment with them.

I still think Macs provide the most integrated platform by far, but it no longer has complete immunity to virus-protection as it did. (MacDefender, etc.) Besides, I see it as becoming the same kind of behemoth that Windows was in the 1990s.

I use Linux nowadays for most of my computing.

98% of everyone on my facebook are people I went to school with, worked with, or are related to. I don't know what kind of trouble any of them would start by trying to go behind my back and talk to my other friends, I don't add people like that.

I'm sorry Johann but I find that viewpoint a little paranoid. By the same logic we could say any of your real life friends, knowing who else you associate with, could backstab you.

Here is letting my emotions and JUB get the best of me once more. I have never been on here to seek attention, I never did anything on here overly outrageous to get people to focus on me. I never faked who I was, I never lied to get people to like me. I never drug anyone through an emotional roller coaster for my own amusement. So it is weird to me that people would see this as some sort of attention tactic when I could have very well made a thread to do that, but I didn't.

I made a post in a confessions thread because that is what you're supposed to do here make a confession that would have a repercussion on your "reputation." What this thread has turned into sometimes is people using the confession to judge others.

I thought I made my problem clear, when I stated that the problem lies with me as well not just JUB. But let me make it even clearer as to why I have a huge problem when it comes to taking breaks or finally deciding not to return to this site. It is literally the only Gay Community I have ever had. I met my boyfriend of 8 years on here and I figure if I can meet a guy like him on here this place has worth when there are other individuals on here who I respect. I have made friends on here and I have met people, talked to them on the phone, etc. These people helped me out a lot as much as they might not think it or know it, these are great friends.

People on here criticize people for making an "announcement" or "spectacle" of leaving when I hardly did that. I could have very well just made a thread but I did not. There are people on here who care about other members and when they just randomly self delete or are just gone they're wondering where said person is, there is a thread dedicated to people leaving. I figured that maybe a little bit of an explanation on here would suffice for the people who actually found worth in me or what I said, but apparently it does not look like that.

Take this for what it is or what you will. An explanation, attention seeking, or a means to criticize me when I'm not around to defend myself. I really don't care and wanted to get this off my chest for the people who actually give a shit about the things I've said on here.

Tombastep I always liked you but making antoher name to come back and rebut things said since you guested your original name hardly jives with "I really don't care."

That's not an attack on you, but it's an observation that you do care more than your post is claiming.

That the only people who get anywhere professionally have to take a tumble on my "casting couch", if you will. And that I've threatened to personally destroy anybody who not just tries to work against that, but who goes to anybody else for help.

I get that these things do happen, but in short my thoughts are:

a) You don't have to let anyone on Facebook mingle with anyone else you know on facebook. You can put friends in different categories so they don't even see each other's existence or posts on your profile.

b) This could just as easily happen in real life with anyone you know who knows other people you work with/interact with.

I guess what I'm saying is... facebook for most people is a collection of people they do know in real life. In fact for many users that's all they have on their facebook, and even then a whole lot of people won't add just anyone. You can set your entire friends list to be invisible. You can set your entire existence on facebook to be invisible and require a link from the owner to even find it.

Of course there's risk but there is, imho, no risk on there you're not aware of at the time you decide to add someone, and plenty of security options to limit the damage anyone you don't know or trust very well can do.

I've only done something to that extent once. This woman in a college study session was making fun of me for being gay and fucking one of her friends. I said right back in her face in front of the class: "how's the genital herpes X gave you?" She stormed out crying.

Yup. Really the way I feel about it is-- you can use it any way you want. I don't know why people feel like you "have to" let all sorts of people from every avenue of your life interact, or even let them all see your friends list. You don't. A lot of people don't add coworkers-- or don't add old school friends, or don't add family members, depending on how they use facebook and how they feel about privacy. And even if you add all three you can put them in separate categories so that none of them can interact or see each other.

I didn't mean to rant at such length about it, except that I think the paranoia about what it can be used for is predicated mostly on not fully understanding all the options that exist to be very very private-- to ridiculous degrees, if one wishes. But ultimately you can "not add" anyone you don't want to, and that alone should solve 90% of it.
