Nonesuch Records Signs Singer/Songwriter Devendra Banhart, Releases Label Debut, "Mala," in Spring 2013
Devendra Banhart, who has just been signed to Nonesuch Records, releases his label debut, Mala, in the spring of 2013. The singer/songwriter co-produced the record with his longtime bandmate, guitarist Noah Georgeson. Further details about the album and its release will be announced shortly, as will upcoming festival and tour dates.
Banhart’s most recent release, 2009’s What Will We Be, received critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone calling it “the best he’s ever made.” The Los Angeles Times said the record “found him making comfortable, laid-back folk that didn’t sound like a compromise—more like an artist growing into his own.”
Devendra Banhart was born in Houston, TX, and moved with his mother to her native Caracas, Venezuela, when his parents separated. The family relocated to Los Angeles during his teenage years; it was there that he learned to speak English, skateboard, and play music. Banhart first began to perform in public while attending the San Francisco Art Institute. He has since lived in Los Angeles, Paris, San Francisco, and New York City, where he currently resides.
Banhart first attracted international notice with his 2002 debut album, Oh Me Oh My … The Way the Day Goes By the Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs of the Christmas Spirit—a collection of recordings he had made for himself. Pitchfork said in its review: “Banhart’s promising debut is the sign of someone destined for great, strange things.”
Of the follow-up, Rejoicing in the Hands, the Times of London said, “The last time such a prodigious talent came on the scene was when Jeff Buckley released his first album, perhaps a fine reference point for the ambition and ability at play here; but Banhart—less refined but more audaciously gifted—sings his own song, and seems blissfully oblivious to the idea that anyone might be listening. But, soon, many will be.” Subsequent albums include Niño Rojo, Cripple Crow, and Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon.
Banhart has collaborated with fellow musicians including Antony and the Johnsons, Beck, Vashti Bunyan, Os Mutantes, Swans, and Vetiver. He also has performed with both Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, and was part of a David Byrne–curated concert at Carnegie Hall.
An accomplished visual artist, Banhart’s distinctive, minutely inked, often enigmatic drawings have appeared in galleries all over the world, including the Art Basel Contemporary Art Fair in Miami; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels; and Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art. He has created the cover art for most of his records, and in 2010 his artwork and packaging for What Will We Be was nominated for a Grammy.

Ellen Allien Announces New Album LISm For February 2013 Release
German musician, producer and founder of BPitch Control Ellen Allien has announced a new album titled LISm that will release in February 2013. The Berlin-born, prolific electronic artist latest output is a rework of the soundtrack Allien composed for a dance performance in 2011.
The original music created for the performance (called ”Drama per Musica”), was intended by Allien to be a musical journey reflective of her DJ sets. The resulting album revives and expands the original piece into something very personal and emotive.
LISm follows-up Ellen Allien’s 2010 album Dust and adds to a long list of career accomplishments. Since its inception, her label BPitch Control has been a staple of Berlin electronic music featuring work from artists such as Sascha Funke, Toktok, Kiki as well as Paul Kalkbrenner and Apparat. Allien also launched her own namesake fashion label in 2006.
Ellen Allien is currently performing shows in Mexico and the album is set to release February 22, 2013 on BPitch Control.

I'm waiting for two albums that have been delayed a bit. One is "Los Internacionales" by Angel & Khriz and the other way Jowell & Randy's Sobredoxis album... that's been delayed as they added more and more songs with other reggaeton artists on it.

Devendra Banhart has shared more details about his new album, Mala,

Re: 2013 Most Anticipated Music Releases
Foxygen release the album 'We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic' out January 22, 2013 on Jagjaguwar
We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic is a precocious and cocksure joyride across California psychedelia with a burning, bursting punk rock engine. In the same year as Scott McKenzie the singer of "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)" leaves this mortal coil, Foxygen delivers unto us the dandy Glockenspiel-packing "San Francisco," which both circumvents and dissects McKenzie's tune and its many cousins of the era.
"I left my love in San Francisco/(That's okay, I was bored anyway)/I left my love in a field/(That's okay, I was born in LA)" goes the lovely call-and-response chorus, slamming together the archetypal flower children of the 60s and the archetypal ADHD vapidity of our recent generations. Another highlight, "Shuggie," manages to fit all the light bounce of the song's namesake and the climbing choruses of ELO into it's 3 minutes while still filling the tune with imagery of "rhinoceros-shaped earrings" and haunted parlors. Every nook and cranny of the record is loaded with their unflappable, brazen personalities. Foxygen takes "swagger," that as-of-late misused adjective, back once and for all. It's flipping pyramids old and new upside down -- from the miracle demo hand-off to their Richard Pryor-as-Jagger live shows to their singular idiosynchratic vision of rock n' roll.
1. In The Darkness
2. No Destruction
3. On Blue Mountain
4. San Francisco
5. Bowling Trophies
6. Shuggie
7. Oh Yeah
8. We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic
9. Oh No

Nonesuch Records eh? I (like most people, I'm guessing) first heard of Banhart because of the Young God Records/Michael Gira connection. This the case for you too? I love Swans/Angels of Light/Akron Family but haven't really got into Banhart's music. Any suggestions for a good starting point?
As for what I'm looking forward to, I'd say the new Nick Cave album. Actually, it's more curiosity - his work since 2007ish has been mediocre at best and I'm hoping he might pull something out of the bag.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs will release their fourth studio album this spring. Titled Mosquito, is out on April 16 through Interscope. There's an actual mosquito on the cover, which was designed by filmmaker/animator Beomsik Shimbe Shim.
Like the last record, Mosquito was produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio and Nick Launay. One of the tracks was produced by James Murphy and features Dr. Octagon (aka Kool Keith).
