What does concern me is his politics. When you make a commercial for Focus On The Family saying that no woman should ever have a certain medical procedure, ever. And thus, you align yourself with FotF's lobbying arm the AFA & its anti-woman and anti-LGBT agenda, then I can pretty much be sure I don't buy anything you endorse. Ever.

I don't know about Matt Hughes, but generally I think this sort of thing is only perceived as cute if you're real, real white and from that middle bit that conservatives think is the "Real" America.

I never really paid too much attention to Tim Tebow until this past football season, but after watching a few interview clips of him... he comes across as a very genuine, likeable guy. Total opposite of what I was expecting after reading some of the views expressed here and in the real world. I've always felt that he does it for the attention, and he seems to thrive on it. If he was modest as God indicates he should be, he shouldn't be so public about it. He knows everyone is watching him and all the cameras are on him. Too much pride and vanity and and arrogance for him to be a proper Christian. I won't even talk about his pay cheque. If we accept your premise, the patriarchs and all the saints in the Bible were all being self-righteous every time they took a public stand for their faith. It is likely that Mr. Tebow ascribes to the belief that he is actually demonstrating humility because he IS willing to publicly humble himself and acknowledge his Creator, especially in a field like sports where large egos prevail. To impugn his motives and his sincerity and impute some sort of false humility seems deeply cynical. It would seem to require some sort of validation beyond just the innuendo of the opining commenter who is a complete stranger to Mr. Tebow.
Is it also assumed that all celebrities who give alms, i.e., large philanthropic donations, do so for self-aggrandizement? Are no one's motives to be accepted as genuine?
And to return to St. Matthew's injunction, I don't believe it was the intent of the author to scorn true acts of worship, only those that are intended to bring some sort of glory to the demonstrator, not to his God. Mr. Tebow's acts are well-known within Christianity to be attempts to deflect some of the imputed sports glory to the One whom the believer sees as the Giver of Life. It would seem that a sports hero has no need to garner religious glory through feigned humility when he already is covered in the glory he has earned in competition.
Likewise, Mr. Tebow is likely making his virginity a public item in an attempt to not allow silence on the subject to enable him to "pass" for a sexually active single man. There has been a sort of hypocrisy among many Christian athletes who espouse celibacy before marriage, but then either practice promiscuity or allow friends and fans to assume it is true rather than the contrary.
None of this is to say we have to agree with his morality, faith, or interpretation of what his personal conduct should be, but it is a bit snide to just slander him with nothing as evidence other than his actual acts of devotion.
Many would also confuse pious with self-pious. Christians are called by their scriptures to act piously, but not self-pious. Today, many religiously illiterate use the two phrases synonymously, but they are opposite. To be holy is not the same as to behave holier than thou. To be separate is not the same as to behave with contempt for those who do not act similarly.
