I don't have just one particular fave; but here's a brief list of a few that I like, a lot:
in no particular order, and I doubt that they all qualify for 'diva' status.
Maria Callas
Joan Sutherland
Marilyn Horne
Dolly Parton
Ella Fitzgerald
Nina Simone
Billy Holiday
Patsy Cline
Shirley Bassey
Dusty Springfield
Eartha Kitt
Liza Minelli
Judy Garland
Cher
Madonna

they are all definitely divas
and they are all great in my book too
Cant believe i left Dolly off of my list

Il Divo
(The 'div' part matches, so it's close enough for me.)
I think the amazing Diamand Galas qualifies for diva status.
Click here, if you dare, to see and hear her passionate piano-playing and fabulous yoweling, whilst she performs live in her full-on, eccentric, madness. :gogirl:

How can we all forget about Aretha Franklin?

Okay. I thought and I thought, and then I thought some more, and I finally came up with one:
Enya
I find that I must agree with cousin on his choices. And Tina IS the DIVA. I have nothing but respect for her and the way she has risen above the bullshit she endured. I saw an interview with her one day in her place in the French Riviera. The interviewer was talking to her about the extavagance of her home and the furnishings and such. She simply replied that she has worked hard and if she wants to treat herself she will, she feels she deserves it. No apologies and no excuses.
Gotta go with Gloria Gaynor.
(No pun intended.)

*hijack*
Not remotely diva-related; but I just can't resist posting a link to this wonderful clip of Graham Central Station performing 'Pow', on Soul Train, back in the 70s.

I'm aware that Larry Graham was a homophobic, JW; but that, in no way, detracts from the stunningly eccentric campy performance and his amazing bass-playing.
They sure knew how to 'funk' back in those days. :gogirl:
*hijack over*
ooh hell yeah !!!

whoopi Goldberg
Shame on you
http://youtube.com/watch?v=le6Qx4PjhB4
Wow! Too many to mention but on top of my list would have to be Madonna...
In no particular order...
Madonna
Cher
Tina
Janet
Patti (both La Belle and LuPone)
Dolly
Reba
Melissa
Aretha
Celine
Gloria
A true diva only needs a one name introduction. Any more and she's not a true diva...
mikey
Not sure she classifies as a 'true' diva, but I like Annie Lennox.
Gimme DEVO.
How about
Petula Clark
Dusty Springfield
And even Barbara Striesand
Barbra Streisand & Judy Garland singing together
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZnp6Txxmao
Barbra alone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sd311...related&search=
and Judy alone obviously loaded off her gourd
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ek7gi...nd%20Palladium
this one is for Elvin and okstatecowboy

These are all great female performers, but are they divas? I thought divas had to be impossibly difficult and demanding and throw hissy fits and just generally act like bitches. And then go out on stage and knock your socks off, of course.
So with that in mind, how about:
Diana Ross
Barbra Streisand
Martha Stewart (domestic diva)
Roseanne
Kathleen Battle
Marlene Dietrich
Mariah Carey
Jessye Norman
and others who have the attitude but not the talent, like J. Lo, Cybill Shepherd, etc.
And you just know in your heart, that Hillary is on that list.
LOL @ Hillary
heres a group that de4finitely qualifies, and since racial equality is one of my most important causes, this song really hits home for me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0TrO...related&search=
Since miss Ross wrote the modern Diva book she has to ahve a video salute in this thread
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQieI...related&search=
I almost put Kathleen Battle down on my list. I had the chance to see he performr twice in solo appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
And then began the stories of her behaviour towards her colleages, the opera companies and even her own staff. Never have I seen an artist self distruct in so many ways and being so un-willing to admit somthing was seriously wrong with her attitude and behaviour. Where were the people around her, who should have taken control of this horrific situation? The final staw was when I heard that serveral artists had refused roles in operas she was to appear in. Talk about an ego getting out of control and a career lost. I shall never understand it.
offtopic: offtopic:
I've heard her once in a solo recital with piano. I'll never forget it, one of the greatest singers I ever heard. So much intelligence in every note. Opera singers aren't always great recitalists, but she certainly was.
A friend of mine was at the Brevard Music Festival when she underwent a near total meltdown onstage. It must have been very painful to experience that so publicly.
I think in her case it goes beyond misbehavior to a deep-rooted insecurity. I think frankly it has a lot to do with being an African-American artist in a mostly white milieu. That and having an exquisitely refined nervous system that just can't shut down.
Kylie (!)
sorry guys
im looking for clips of the opera divas, but they are hard to come by
still looking !!!
Please is it possible to add Klaus Nomi to the list.

Well there's tons of Kathleen Battle on Youtube, for starters. Here's one that's just delightful (poor video quality unfortunately):

And I thought I caught a glimpse of Maria Callas in concert. Post that one in a minute.
Thanks Slobone !!!
You rock !!
I just thinking today about an artist whom I have always admired, but does not seem to be very well known these days. Valida Snow. She was a jazz trumpeter, singer, and musical savant. She led her own band and worked with some of the greatest names in jazz.
