A while ago I saw a documentary where prisoners were being taken into prison for the first time. Before they could enter they had to undergo a full strip search. Of course they didn't show any of it, but they showed the guys coming out of it looking very pissed off because aparently they had to bend over and show they weren't hiding anything up their butt. I taught at a prison and can assure you that strip searches are real and thorough. Although I never had to have it done-- only the inmates-- they are searched after every meeting with anyone from the public. My students were stripped searched after each class-- it was a medium security prison. I watched once. It was open wide-- mouth and ass. It wasn't sexual at all.

Posts 37 and 48 do bring up a certain "question" of the dignity of the inmates. I worked in a MAX prison for adult male felons for a number of years. Upon commiting the crime they were convicted of, they did forego some rights, such as the privacy issue. We would do strip searches (often called the nuts and butts detail) on any inmate that had been transported outside of the facility (such as court appearances or hospital treatments) and after any contact visits with family or friends. It was not done to humiliate or denigrate the inmates. It was done to prevent contraband from entering the prison. In the event there was the suspicion that there was anything "UP" there, they then went to the clinic where the medical personnel would do a body cavity search. You see, it is very difficult to keep something shoved up your arse while you bend over as far as you can, reach behind and grab your cheeks and then cough. We found drugs, cell phones, money and weapons through this process.
