About the hairstyle, you should have the tips "razor thinned" in order to achieve the messed up look. What the stylist usually do is that it thins the hair by cutting it with a razor blade, not just an ordinary hair trimmer. But sometimes, if the stylist is really good at it, the look can be achieved even by using a thinning hair scissors. Don't know though if my terms are correct but that's basically it. :D
try to find a stylist that's an asian, maybe he knows how. ;)

There are wax made to style hair, these are hair wax. I don't really know what brands are available there in the US coz I use products made here in the Philippines. I'll check our malls next time for imported brands, maybe these are available there.
There are two types of hair wax, one is the solid on or we call the push up wax, you apply it by rubbing it in a circular motion on your hair. the other one is soft wax where you apply it by using your finger tips to achieve the messed up look. ;)

I do have that kind of hair wax.It's kindda like a deodorant stick..But it's super hard and I sometimes feel like melting it in the microwave.If you rub it into yr hair directly from the stick,you'll find most of your hair stick to it.And not to mention that it's super hard to wash from your hair even if you use shampoo.Seriously.For occasional use like clubbing once a month,I guess it's pretty ok though.

Yeah its hard to wash off because its wax and I guess it fights the cleansing effect of water. But a stylist suggested to shampoo your hair without using water first, the wax dissolves in the shampoo, when you rinse it off, the wax rinses easily then you can shampoo again your hair as usual afterwards. :D

Im a son of a hair stylist. Yes a razor cut helps to do that, (thats kinda how my hair is) Any good hair wax will do that, try paul mitchel, they make one--- also they have a product called XTG that works well in doing things similar to that, also supprisingly Elmers glue works well too
