Buckshot Man Brian Hansen is practically sitting on top of the world these days. While he's not quite at the North Pole, he's cozily ensconced in Amsterdam (close enough) with his new boyfriend, Brad Patton.
The rise from porn obscurity to being Brian Hansen has been meteoric. A few years ago, modeling as David Lynch, he had a relatively inconspicuous and personally unsatisfying porn career, despite working for two of the industry's most illustrious directors, Lucas Kazan and John Travis. He couldn't have been too inconspicuous, though. COLT's Kristofer Weston sought him out and invited him to become the very first exclusive model for COLT's Buckshot Productions. You can read the particulars in the interview that follows, but the short version is that Hansen reappeared, with a new name, harder abs, tighter buns and a darker tan. He displayed his talents in three mega-hit films in 2006: Hard Studies, Big Rig and Manly Heat: Quenched. And to cap it all off, he walked away with two HeatGay awards in October, at the Barcelona International Festival of Gay Erotic Cinema, Best Actor and Most Original Sex Scene (with Adam Dexter), both for Hard Studies.
Brian took time out from the holidays to chat with Just Us Boys and reflect on his career, his new Web site, his goals and his new relationship with Brad Patton.
What can your fans expect to find on your new Web site? I am very excited about BrianHansenXXX.com. It has been built using some of the most advanced technology available for web designers today, so it is very easy to use. My site features things such as blogs, forums, galleries and a very advanced live Web cam show feature. I want my site to be as interactive as possible and love that my fans contribute actively on the forums and in the chat room. I love that this site is a great place for people to "hang."
How long have you and Brad Patton been a couple and how did you meet? Was it at the Manly Heat shoot? I read in (director) Kristofer Weston's blog that he was unable to keep the two of you apart.I met Brad in early May 06 during the production of Manly Heat. I initially said no to the production as I was very busy with research for my second masters degree in Australia.
Kristofer asked what it would take for me to say yes. I said I would seriously consider making time for the production if he could get Brad Patton for me. What I was unaware of was that Brad had shown interest in working with me as well.
Needless to say, it all worked out and I was very exited. I met Brad a few days before our scene, and it was a strange feeling. We had an instant connection; it was a totally different ball game than I had experienced before. We had so much in common, our cultural backgrounds, and the way we had lived our lives.
We ended up spending the nights prior to the scene in the same bed. Kristofer Weston and John Rutherford tried to keep us apart with no luck, but in gratitude for letting us sleep in the same bed, we played by the rules and actually did not have sex before the day of the scene. We had a lot of energy and other things built up by the time we were ready to shoot the scene.
Give me any basic personal stats that you want to share; e.g. height, weight, age, education, cock size ... I always find these questions hard since I never weigh or measure myself, and also because I find it hard to convert from the metric.
I am 1.70 m. on a good day (I think that is 5-foot-8). My weight fluctuates depending on how much ice cream I eat, but normally around 72 kg. (158 lbs.). When it comes to my cock size I normally say it is good enough to be in porn, but I think it is around 8 inches.
Education has been a big part of my life. I have a bachelor's degree in Business and Finance, a master of business administration (MBA) and a masters in Strategic Human Resource Management. I am playing with the thought of starting my Ph.D.
Brian, you have worked under other names for other prestigious directors - Lucas Kazan, John Travis. How did that come about and why did you become Brian Hansen? I did two productions years ago with Lucas Kazan and John Travis. For some reason I did not really enjoy being in this industry and ventured back into more mainstream projects. I had no plans of getting back into the adult industry, but when I was asked by COLT Studio Group, I decided to give it another go. They seemed so nice and professional and since they offered me to be the first exclusive for the Buckshot line, I decided to do it. Since I felt it was a new start and very different than the first time, I decided to "re-brand" myself, something COLT also thought was a good idea.
The Netherlands allows same sex marriage. Is that in the plans or is that too personal a question? Is Brad a Dutch citizen? I am very glad more and more countries are realizing that gay relationships hold the same value as straight relationships and therefore opens up for marriage. Neither Brad nor I are Dutch citizens, but we both hold passports to countries where gay marriages are legal.
I am a born romantic and therefore dream of a beautiful lifelong relationship. The thought of marriage is definitely nice and may very well happen one day. I have, however, said that I will never commit to anyone that way as long as I am part of the adult industry. It is challenging enough to be in a monogamous relationship being in this industry (not due to temptations but due to the ethics) so committing to marriage as long as I am part of the adult industry would be too big of a clash with my ethical position.
Brad is notorious for the dimensions and curvature of his erect penis. How does a bottom prepare for this? This might take the fantasy away, but honestly, I am not a size queen at all. Quite frankly, I don't get increased pleasure proportionally with bigger cocks. Everyone is commenting on my boyfriend's size, but I actually think everyone is missing out on commenting on how "esthetically pleasing" it is. He has got a very beautiful penis, and that is for me a bigger turn on than the actual size.
How a bottom prepares for a larger cock? Well, I can only speak for myself and say that I don't do anything special. I am always ready to go!
How did you feel winning two awards in Barcelona, for Best Actor and Best Sex Scene? How surprised were you? It was very exiting for me to be nominated, let alone winning two awards at the Barcelona International HeatGay erotic film festival. I came to Barcelona with no expectations besides having fun in my favorite city. I was very surprised when I ended up taking home two awards and wining over amazing performers from studios such as Bel Ami, Hot House and others. I could not have done this without the support and very hard work from all of the staff at COLT Studio Group.
What do you do for a "day job" or does porn generate all your income right now? When I finished my second masters, it was also an end to over six years at university. After that long ordeal I decided to take a few months off, before I start the process of applying for jobs. These few months have done me good and I now feel ready and motivated to start telling companies that "they need me."
How long would you like to remain in front of the camera as a XXX model, and what comes afterwards? I have learned not to make too many plans for the future, life often changes and if you make too many plans if will negatively affect your flexibility. I have said before that I will be involved in the adult industry as long as I think it is fun and as long as I feel it is right.
What does it mean to be a Buckshot Exclusive? Doesn't an exclusive contract mean you make fewer films than if you were a free agent, and therefore less money? Yes. I am Buckshot's very first exclusive. Being an exclusive means you only work for one studio during a time frame that is stated in the contract. You normally do fewer scenes than what you might do if you worked as a free performer, but exclusives are compensated at a higher rate.
Since it was not my interest to pump out movies and become overexposed, I decided that a contract would be right for me. It was also an honor to be asked by John Rutherford to be the first exclusive for the awarded Buckshot Productions.
When you worked for Studio 2000, they said you were Norwegian. I thought you were Australian? I have been lucky to live in several countries on different continents. Based on that and based on my frequent travels due to my extensive network of friends and family, it is understandable that journalists can get confused. Identity for me comes down to where you feel at home, where your heart lies. I have just moved away from Australia, but my heart and my soul is still there. Australia is an amazing place; I had no idea it would be so heard to relocate or that I would miss my country so much. Australia is my country.
Do you and Brad get recognized much in public and is that good or not? When we are in the states we get recognized quite a lot. Brad has been in the industry longer, so he gets it more than I do, but the success I have had this last year is starting to show in the way people are recognizing me we as well.
The other day in Amsterdam I almost got attacked in a bar. An American flight attendant spotted me from across the room and let's just say he did not try to hide his excitement. I think all the patrons in the bar know who I am now.
Generally speaking, the attention we get is positive. People are nice and polite and only want to chat to you about what it is like to be in the industry, maybe a photo and an autograph. It think it is a big part of our job to communicate with our fans, so it has always been important for me to be polite and nice back.
Will either of you be at the GayVN awards in San Francisco in February? Absolutely Yes! COLT is throwing their 40th Anniversary party the same weekend and I hear it's going to be spectacular!
A famous porn director (who shall remain nameless) told me recently that "it takes a different kind of person" to be a porn star. Do you agree? If so, what's the difference? Different jobs require different talents. This also applies to the adult industry. There are definitely particular traits you need to have in order to be successful in this industry. Not only physical assets, but the right attitude and ability to perform. At the end of the day, we are performers and not all people have the ability to go into a situation, put on a happy face and do a great performance.
What do you do for recreation and what do you do for entertainment? I have been spending time getting to know Amsterdam. I have now done all the museums and galleries there, as well as all the naughty shops (love the contrast). I also have tried to get some quality time in at the gym, but since I (we) eat too much ice cream, it has been a challenge. I love spending time with friends, either at a bar or home over a nice meal and a bottle of wine. Brad is a great cook so much time is spent talking to him as he prepares dinner. I have also been able to catch up on some movies I haven't seen yet.
What constitutes a typical "day in the life" of Brian or Brad when you are not filming? It depends on whether we are traveling or at home. At home our day normally starts pretty late, as we both like to sleep in. We have breakfast together, then Brad is off to the ice rink and I am off to the gym. We then meet at home for a late lunch and do some work on the computer. Communication with fans at BrianHansenXXX.com is important, so replying to e-mails is part of the daily routine.
The night often includes a little bit of TV, and maybe catching up with friends for a drink or two. Since we are both are very sexually attracted to each other, it doesn't go too long in-between sex - morning midday or evening, we fit it in when we get the urge.
